Rating: Summary: A book who's quality is unsurpassed by any other book. Review: This is one of John Irving's Top three novels, he really pours in the real life drama and feelings in to this book. This book had the effect that most others lack, the feeling that I was there. I woke up the next morning after reading the book, wondering, well whats going happen to John and Owen today?!? This book hooked me, it is a 500-some-page-book, it is worth every page.
Rating: Summary: Simply the best story I've ever read. Review: I laughed out loud. I cried. I recommend this book to anyone who asks me for something to read. I give this book to people I love. I'm on my second hard cover copy (I wore the first one out). It's a story you can read over and over again and still discover something new, refreshing and always funny. And I share a significant date w/Owen. I was born on 7/8.
Rating: Summary: Spiritually Uplifting! Review: This is one book that really made me think. I absolutely loved its spirituality and the main character's conviction. The ending tied everything together perfectly. I have heard that there is movie version coming out soon. I have no idea how they will be able to do justice to the character of Owen Meany.
Rating: Summary: The best book I have ever read, even the third time. Review: This book takes you through all the emotions. I guarantee you will laugh throughout the book, and will cry at the conclusion.
Rating: Summary: I still find myself thinking about Owen Meany Review: I still find myself thinking about Owen Meany. I can't remember a character ever having such an impact on me. The world would be a better place if each of us exhibited the strength of Owen. He never wavers. This story is beautifully narrated through John, Owen's best friend, who is surrounded by a loving family. John is brilliant to discover early in his life that Owen is a treasure who needs the support of he and his family to develop. We are able to experience the journey of these two boys, which at times, seems excitingly real. Until we examine our own lives and search for our own "Voices".
Rating: Summary: absolutley beautiful Review: Irving possesses this uncanny talent for creating characters who seem to haunt you months, even years, after you've met them. "A Prayer for Owen Meany" is by far his best collection of such characters yet. I fell so in awe of this book that I, like another response given here, named my Maltese after this little fellow with the big voice... If you have not read it, get up from your computer right now and do yourself a favor... buy it in hardback and start enjoying it. Another book of Irving's that has this same haunting quality is "The Hotel New Hampshire"-- Remember-- "Sorrow floats."
Rating: Summary: What can I say? Review: THIS IS ABSOLUTELY-WITHOUT-A-DOUBT THE BEST BOOK I HAVE READ IN MY 43-YEAR LIFE. THE ENDING IS TOTALLY UNEXPECTED AS IT REVEALS.....JUST READ IT!
Rating: Summary: A wonderfully wrought book. Review: This book was written in a way that few books are today: as if Irving was saying, "I have a story, and I'm going to tell it the way a story should be told -- slowly, wonderfully, humorously, warmly. If you sit still and listen you will not be disappointed." And I wasn't. There was not a wasted element of plot. Everything was brought around full circle in the conclusion. When I finished the book I wanted to continue in the circle and start it all over again. I am constantly on the lookout for other books like this. Unfortunately, they are rare.
Rating: Summary: I can imagine I will ever like another book better. Review: When I read the Hotel New Hampshire, at the recomendation of my parents who are both huge Irving fans, I thought this is my favorite book ever. It was not until I read OWEN MEANY that I retracted my previous claims. This book captured me like non other to date. I have recommended this story to others and they all come back to praise Irving, he is fantastic!!!! I just got a new puppy and I named him OWEN!!!!
Rating: Summary: THE BEST BOOK Review: WITHOUT EQUIVOCATION, THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ. AN AMAZING EXPLORATION OF LOVE,FAITH, FRIENDSHIP AND BELIEF.YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK BEFORE YOU DIE.
