Rating: Summary: It's been a while since I read this - but it is still #1 Review: A recent UK Books survey - placed this in the 'All Time Top-Ten'. I'd go further - the best all-round novel - ever!Of course, I'm an Irvine fan - but the fact that I can still remember several memorable scenes after one read, after all this time - says it all. The Baseball accident, the VW, the ending ... sensational. Please - go out of your way to catch up with Irvine, if you've never had the joy; this is no better place to start!
Rating: Summary: One of those rare books that you absolutely cannot put down! Review: Reading is THE pastime in our household. I read about five books a week (no exaggeration). "A Prayer.." was the first book that pulled me into the character as deep as this one. I was sobbing at the end, knowing what was coming and knowing that Owen knew what was coming.....as he fulfilled his "destiny". I am not overly religious but I believe we are all here for a purpose. Owen was blessed or cursed to know what his purpose was. It is a "must read" for everyone who considers themselves well-read. If this isn't on every high school's reading list, then our education system is cheating our children of a masterful piece of work.
Rating: Summary: Funny, insightful, extremely well written with heart. Review: I started reading this book, could not put it down, read it while walking through Grand Central. After reading A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEENY NOTHING else is measuring up.Do yourself a favor and read this book. I know those who were not blown away,as someone else noted THEY JUST DON'T GET IT. Perhaps you will ! I recommend you start reading it at once, it is that good. You do have to read about 63 pages before you are hooked. Prepare to stay up very late reading.
Rating: Summary: Mind-blowing! Review: My best friend reccommended this book to me and said that I would be amazed; he was right! A Prayer for Owen Meany is a book like none other; however, the full scope of Irving's genius doesn't hit until the end of the book. Read it and see what we mean! It is life-changing (at least for me)!
Rating: Summary: Chilling, Haunting, Incredible! Review: Among the best books I have ever read (and I was an English major in college)...this one grabs you from the first line--"I am doomed to remember a boy..."-- Well, Mr. Irving, I am doomed to read and reread your brilliant novels.
Rating: Summary: An uneven read. Review: Reading "A Prayer for Owen Meany" is like driving on a highway through interesting landscape but where one meets rough paving, unexpected potholes, and too many signs along the side of the road telling what is ahead. Foreshadowing ought to be rather more subtle. And does Irving mean his determinist, omen-ridden religion, or is this a writer's pose?
Rating: Summary: FAITH, LOVE, COURAGE, SACRIFICE... Review: I first read the stunning A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY ten years ago. Upon re-reading it, I've found it fully retains its power to both richly entertain and move me deeply. Thank you, John Irving, for this wondrous gift!
Rating: Summary: One of the most powerful books I've ever read! Review: I've read this book three times already and urge everybody to read this book! It is a book that makes you laugh, cry and contemplate life- Owen is my hero!
Rating: Summary: If You Don't Give This Book Five Stars... Review: ...then I am sorry, but you JUST DON'T GET IT. This is the best book I have or ever will read. I am not a Christian, but I believe that Irving, whether he accepts it or not, was the "instrument of God" when he wrote this book.
Rating: Summary: Exhilirating - a breathtakingly wonderful reading adventure! Review: John Irving masterfully weaves an incredibly powerful and intricate story, touching the reader emotionally as few authors can and do. In this book, Owen Meany comes alive, a character we all want to be our best friend, mentor and spiritual guru. Suffice it to say this is a singular reading experience and to divulge too much of the story would surely ruin the ride! This book will change the way you think about life.
