Rating: Summary: Probably the Most Incredible Book Ever Review: I recieved "Owen Meany" as a birthday gift, and was somewhat unsure when I got it, except that my friend said it was the best book she ever read. It took an extremely short while to go through this novel, and it has to be the most incredible piece of modern fiction around. It made me laugh out loud, choke back tears, grip the pages in terror, and rave about the novel to every person who would listen to me. I know that a lot of people are dreading to read this for an AP English class, but it is one of very few books that moved me to great emotional lengths, and I recommend it to anyone and everyone
Rating: Summary: A raving review for one of the greatest books i've ever read Review: In my four years of high school, I've been forced to read many books. Don't get me wrong, I love to read, but they have never reccomended a book that I thought was reading until I took AP English, and was required to read A Prayer for Owen Meany. From the very begining, I was absolutley riveted, laughed, cried and thoroughly enjoyed the book. If there is ever a book to take on a desert Island with you, this is it, because it can be read and re read, and enjoyed ever time.
Rating: Summary: MY ALL TIME FAVORITE NOVEL! Review: I'm seeking other book reccomendations from readers who loved Owen Meany. Please feel free to email. Maybe we could exchange our favorites list? THANKS! :-) julieah@televar.com
Rating: Summary: All the Reviews are true Review: I ordered this book after reading the rave reviews. What can I say - its all true. You must read it. Complex, funny and I sobbed at the end. What else could you want?
Rating: Summary: I love Owen Meany Review: John Irving has told us a wonderful story. I could not put it down, but when I did it was only because I was emotionally drained. I will not go to see the movie (Simon Birch) because it will surely be a disappointment. I understand they took out the Vietnam element. Nothing in that story is removeable ...everything was important.
Rating: Summary: Despite differences between book & film, I'll be #1 in line Review: I *LOVED* this book, as so many others obviously do. Altho I am pretty much sure the movie cannot compare to the book, I will definitely be going to see it just out of curiosity. I saw an article for "Simon Birch" in the Aug.20/28 Entertainment Weekly, which included a picture of the child playing Simon Birch (who is the newly renamed, movie-version Owen Meany) and this kid *IS* Owen. He looks just as I had pictured him from Irving's description. It's an amazing casting job. The film "Simon Birch" is (or is at least marketed to be) a funny, cute, PG-rated look at an odd boy growing up in New Hampshire with his friend, and may be entertaining. But it is not much like the witty, wonderful, sometimes darkly comic "A Prayer for Owen Meany."
Rating: Summary: Breath-taking, vividly colorful, absolutely wonderful Review: A Prayer For Owen Meany is a book that can truly take one's breath away. The characters are colorful, and vividly so. The storyline has you guessing, wondering, and completely enthralled. The questions about faith, religion and god that Irving raises are poignant and thought-provoking. I didnt think, as an avid Garp lover, that Owen Meany could steal my heart. He did.
Rating: Summary: A life-changing read!!! Review: Forget, the film, forget anything anyone says about unrealistic representations of Christianity, of the Bible, of Vietnam...this is simply a book that will change you. I've just re-read it for perhaps the 7th time or so. Owen meany is - despite some criticisms I've read- the most profound, well-written, believable character I've ever come across. John irving's characterization seems to get better and better. Tabby, Johhny, Mr and Mrs Meany - every character seems to inhabit an entirely Other world, but at the same time, they are, each and every one, relentlessly real. The problem with this book is that it may ruin the rest of your reading career. If you're going to see the film, read the book beforehand. You'll end up buying it for most of your friends and family, as I have since I first read it...Truly amazing...
Rating: Summary: dissappointing Review: For the most part of the book I enjoyed it thoroughly until I reached the most dissappointing ending that there ever could be to a book. It was bland and totally unrealistic, Irving did such a wonderful job with the rest of the book only to leave me with a bitter taste for the book in my mouth at the end of my reading.
Rating: Summary: THIS BOOK IS THE BEST BOOK OF ALL BOOKS Review: I just finished reading A Prayer for Owen Meany for the second time. Owen is one of my all-time favorite characters and this book is one of my favorite books. I won't go see the movie because I have a clear picture in my mind of Owen. I also have an idea of the way THE VOICE sounds. Just thinking about going to the movie gives me the shivers.
