Rating: Summary: Life-Changing Review: I read this book once a year for personal therapy. I recommend it to people who feel they have lost faith in something, no matter what it is. The characters in this book are drawn with beauty and dignity. You will never look at an armadillo, stuffed, mounted, living, or otherwise, again, without thinking of Owen Meany.
Rating: Summary: You'll laugh, cry, and question faith & destiny all at once Review: "A Prayer for Owen Meany" was a book I thoroughly enjoyed, down to the last letter. It is a thoroughly feasible story about an amazing friendship, faith in God and in oneself, and the inevitable power of destiny. It is a story that will leave you wishing you knew Owen personally, and had experienced this fascinating tale firsthand. "A Prayer for Owen Meany" is truly a remarkable, once-in-a-lifetime read.
Rating: Summary: THE ABSOLUTE BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ!!!! Review: Read it and drift throught childhood, adolesence and early adulthood with Owen and Johnny. These two characters are Irving's best. Without question Meany is his most influencial. I keep asking myself, "What would Owen Meany think about that...", as I encounter everyday struggles in my own maturity.
Rating: Summary: A good read but Irving does go on, and on..... Review: I am swimming against the tide, but I lost interest in this book in several places, read two other books while reading this one. This is a Dickens-like book; not exactly concise. I wonder if the editor was on vacation. Also, I have a feeling men rate this book higher than women. On the plus side, I will not easily forget Own Meaney, great character development (though protagonist John Wheelwright is certainly a less than memorable character) and I laughed outloud a lot.
Rating: Summary: Just read it. Review: This will easily make your top 5 All-time Best Book list. John Irving has an insight for humanity, love and life, like no one I've ever read. As the others have alluded, I'm not sure what emotion you will exude harder: joy or sadness. One of the few books you should own in hardcover.
Rating: Summary: An outstanding, insightful and enjoyable read Review: Owen Meany is a one of a kind and thought provoking character. Through his eyes John Irving reflects on the meaning of life and friendship. This book made me laugh and cry. A reread is in the future.
Rating: Summary: The sweetest book I've ever read Review: I cannot articulate the feelings I experienced reading "Owen Meany". I read on the subway on my way to work and there were many times when I simply had to put the book down, practically mid-sentence, inorder to relish "the moment". I took my sweet ol' time reading this as I didn't want to let him (Owen) out of my life. I loved this book, I was totally hooked. I read a lot. No one has moved me like "Owen". Thank you, John.
Rating: Summary: Interesting and compelling Novel, I Loved it! Review: "A Prayer For Owen Meany" was the best book I have ever read. I am not a big reader, in fact I hate to read but this book definitly held my interest. I thought that whole the story about the little boy being Gods instrument was just fasinating. I would recomend that everyone read this novel!
Rating: Summary: Irving at his best Review: I must admit to a certain bias, as John Irving has long been one of my favourite authors, but this is a superb book. It is a book about love and friendship. It's religious without being preachy, and sad without being maudlin. It contains Irving's usual subtle characterisation and paced plot-development, blended with a strong sense of humanity and a devastating climax. In my opinion, not only is this John Irving's best work, it is one of the finest books I have ever read
Rating: Summary: Owen - the most memorable character I've ever met Review: I heard about the movie version of A Prayer for Owen Meany, my all-time most interesting read, and did some searches to learn about who would have the audacity to take on this amazing character. The search led me to this site, where I've enjoyed reminiscing while reading the reviews. I was an English teacher working part-time at a library when this book was published. Its sheer heaviness first drew my attention, but reading the first sentence intrigued me so that I checked it out that day and started reading. I was so much more than entertained! Many years and many books later, I have yet to encounter a character so riveting as Owen. It was so hard for me to believe he was fictional that I kept analyzing John Irving's photo on back for a missing digit. I wanted to believe Johnny was real, and, thus, so was Owen. Though he was created only in the world of words, Owen will always live on in my heart. Don't miss the chance to know him!
