Rating: Summary: I guess I'm the only one who didn't like this book. Review: I read this book because I was aware of its imense popularity, yet I was extemely disappointed. In my opinion, the book quickly denegrated into an annoying lecture of the authors religious (protestant) and political (liberal) views. The characters are enjoyable but it was hard for me to stick with the story through all of the authors religious and political references that were not relevant to the inspiring story of the characters.
Rating: Summary: A book which changed my life Review: A Prayer for Owen Meany changed my life. A totally uplifting book which comments on religion to those who are believers and those who are not. The vivid character portrayed by John Irving is the most unusual I have come across. I believe it is a gross injustice to have made the book into a film and will shatter many illusions readers have in their minds when picturing the amazing Owen. Personally this is the most moving book I have read and I have a strong desire to meet John Irving and shake him by the hand...
Rating: Summary: All time Favorite/True Classic Review: I just finished reading Owne Meaney for the second time. I first read it a few years ago. I can't wait to read it again. I would love to know how Mr. Irving creates his characters. Where did Owen Meaney come from? It really doesn't matter, I'm just glad he was here! My husband doesn't enjoy reading, but I had to read some excerpts to him, and he was hysterical laughing. I also enjoyed how the narrator's political complaints from 1987 are similar to today's political-three-ring-circus. This is definitely my favorite book.
Rating: Summary: THERE'S JUST SOMETHING ABOUT OWEN Review: Having read and recommended this book about a zillion times, I would sum up A Prayer For Owen Meany thusly: It is a book so moving, so well-written and so original that anyone who has not read it is missing out on a fundamental joy.
Rating: Summary: The Most Incredible, Memorable, Emotionally Profound Book Review: I have read probably 1,000 books and this is by far the most memorable and emotionally profound one I have ever read. I just finished the last chapter and I feel a real sense of loss. I already miss Owen. I do not even want to start reading another book yet because I need time to get over this book. This is now number one for me and I can't even think of a book that comes into a close number two. Stupendous!
Rating: Summary: Better and better each time I read it Review: This is my favorite book. The first time that I read it was for a high school English class. I loved the book so much that I have read it at least once a year ever year after taking this class. I recommend this book to everyone, in the hopes that they might enjoy it even half as much as I do.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely my favorite book. Review: I fell in love with this story. It changed my life. I regret that I will not be able to read it for the first time again. I recommend this book to anyone with a desire to explore your true self.
Rating: Summary: Believe Review: Owen Meany is a book which shows us the power of the individual. If only we belive in ourselves we can inspire belief in all those around us. Owen when young, is a physically weak person. His skin is described as translucent and his body is so light that it is easy for Johnny and his other classmates in Sunday school to lift him above thier heads. Ironically, this ritual act of humiliation can also be seen as a representation of the way in which Owen is raised up above the average person, and how he is able to look down upon his own life and see a greater truth. There a primarily two lights in which Owen can be seen, either as a Christ -like saviour or as a deluded and disturbed young man. I think that the novel intends for us to see Owen as something very special, rather than a madman. Our view of him does however, depend a great deal on how reliable we feel Johnny Wheelwright is as a narrator. The reason I think that the majority of people accept Owens life as it is told, is because of the total belief that he inspires in Johnny. We are able to accept Owen with greater certainty because he has had such a powerful effect on so many people. It is hard not to think that he must have been extremely special. Owen lived and died for a cause, he died having fullifilled his purpose. We may not all have such a concrete reason for living as purposfully as Owen did, but we should take this book as an example of how we can all achieve something. We should all have our own beliefs and goals, and we should never compramise what we hold to be true if we truly belive it.
Rating: Summary: Without a doubt the best book I have read yet ! Review: "A Prayer for Owen Meany" is without a doubt the best book I have read yet. It is so unique and so different to everything else. I have never laughed nor felt so much sadness in one novel. Owen Meany is so vivid, interesting and extraordinary that he really comes to life. I almost felt like he was my friend too and this is what makes his ultimate death so tragic. On my second read I realised just how complex John Irving's novel is. Every intricate detail is there for a reason and the author continually gives us clues and suggestions about the story. It takes an awful lot for a novel to make me feel such strong emotions and several times I found myself laughing out loud. I will never forget scenes such as the headmaster shrieking obscenities from under his Volkswagon! or the famous Christmas pageant of '53! The next book I read will have A LOT to live up to!
Rating: Summary: Truely amazing Review: There are not enough words to justly describe this novel. It's amazing! However, it is not until the end, that you witness the true greatness of John Irving's talent in creating the character who really is too good to be true. This novel is guaranteed to pull at your heartstrings causing you to shed a tear. Each character is wonderfully portrayed with their own personality, enabling you to become attached to even the most briefly mentioned character, successfully exposing you to the feelings and emotions that are evident. As a result, you too become affected by the experiences of the main characters, such as Owen, Johnny, Dan and so on. John Irving's amazing style makes you believe that this is a non-fiction novel, but then you realise that there can never be anyone quite like Owen, he is a true individual, something that could only have been created by a superior being. I recommend this novel to everyone, but you must be prepared to be moved by this life-changing novel.
