Rating: Summary: an extremely touching novel Review: This is the second time I read this book. I enjoyed this book so much more this time that I plan on reading it a third, and a fourth, and a fifth...... well, you get my drift. Each time I read it I expect I'll pick up something I didn't the first two times.
Rating: Summary: Review Review: THIS BOOK WAS THE BEST THING THAT I HAVE EVER READ. NOT ONLY WAS IT BRILLIANTLY WRITTEN AND EXCELLENT TO READ, IT HAUNTS YOU. I FINISHED IT YESTERDAY AND I CAN'T STOP THINKING ABOUT IT. I RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE. TRYING TO DESCRIBE THIS BOOK AND WHAT IT IS ABOUT WOULD BE LIKE TRYING TO DESCRIBE THE FACE OF AN ANGEL.
Rating: Summary: I laughed and cried throughout the book Review: I have read this book at least 5 times in the past 10 years. I had to purchase another one because the first book started losing pages from being read so much. I won't even loan this book to anyone for fear they will forget to return it. Need I say more?
Rating: Summary: best book ever Review: this is the best book that was ever written. when i finished reading it i didn't want to leave the story. you deeply connect with all the characters and the ending is extraordinary. a must read for anyone with feelings
Rating: Summary: The Book Review: My sister and I often trade our opinions about books, agreeing on many and disagreeing on a few. A Prayer for Owen Meany, however is just "The Book." We share this book carefully with friends, as we know anyone who doesn't adore it will lose some of our esteem in the process.
Rating: Summary: So much promise in the beginning, then he lost me Review: I had so much hope for this book - that it would be funny, thought-provoking and moving. The early parts, with Owen as a child, were perfect - there were several scenes that had me laughing so hard I was crying. But then Owen grew up, became a pack-a-day smoker, started living with his friend's female cousin, helped his draft-dodging buddy avoid military duty, and suddenly the story had lost its charm. Then, on top of that, we are forced to listen to the present-day liberal whinings of the narrator - I mean, why was that included? Every time he'd start in, I'd just roll my eyes and start skimming. And that's basically what I did for a large part of the middle section - skim. I did like the ending, however, that tied many things together, although I thought the author should have let us draw some of the connections ourselves (e.g., Owen saying "REMEMBER ALL OUR PRACTICING?").All in all, my advice would be to read the first 5 chapters, then skip to the last. You won't miss much.
Rating: Summary: Review of A Prayer for Owen Meany, by John Irving Review: This book is excellent reading for anyone inerested in a look on the bright side of life. John Irving delivers a masterpiece about two young boys growing into adulthood. It explores the way we all think as children, the way we all looked at the world once. I enjoyed it immensely; it became one of my favorite books!
Rating: Summary: Engrossing characters breathe life Review: Of any book that I've read, this is the one that I give to friends at least twice a year. There will never be a more reluctant hero than Owen, and all you can do is hold your breath as this first-person story takes you through his sad but soul-freeing life.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely the best Review: Ever since I was a child, I have loved to read. I own more books than the law should allow, and the only one I own that I can recommend without reservation is A Prayer for Owen Meany. It is without a doubt my all-time favorite book...and I had a minor in English in college. I have read this book countless times and still love it. However, I HATED the so-called movie version of this book, the simply AWFUL Simon Birch. Avoid it at all costs! Just read the book!
Rating: Summary: I would give it more if i could Review: Brilliant. Perhaps the first book i have ever read that combines humour, history and lessons about life. I have heard the film (Simon Birch) is terrible but don't, even for an instant, let that put you off. The best book i have ever read. I am writing this review 6 months after finishing the book and i am still recommending it to everyone i know. READ IT.
