Rating: Summary: I am an Agnostic and I cried my eyes out. Review: Recommended by a friend whom actually cried because I decided to read the book. A young man actually chased me out of a coffee shop and across the street to say, "Stick with it, even if it gets slow, don't stop reading, Okay?" He made me promise; a promise I do not regret one bit. Without a doubt the most emotionally stirring book I have ever read (I don't know what that says about me), It made me cry for an hour at least. If you fancy yourself a diehard Atheist and have not read A Prayer for Owen Meany, you are untested. If you fancy yourself a Christian and have not read A Prayer for Owen Meany, you are truly missing out on what I consider a modern vision of your faith. This book is so full of subtleties, wit and insight, I fear it may be lost on many. Just remember as you read, everything is on purpose. Don't be afraid. ;)
Rating: Summary: Marvelous! Review: One of my favorite books of all time. I have given this to many of my friends and even though they don't like to read, they can't put it down. The first time reading it, I found the first chapters dull and boring, but once I got past it, it was an addiction!
Rating: Summary: all time favorite Review: I absolutely loved A Prayer for Owen Meany and could not lay it down. I spent a few sleepless nights completely enthralled as I just could not part with the characters. The foreshadowing of events kept the pages turning. I became so atttached to little Owen. I would highly recommend the book. John Irving is a favorite author; I have enjoyed many of his works, but feel this is by far his best.
Rating: Summary: the prayer Review: The fact that I was reading this book at this time in my life when major choices of change had to be decided was I believe more profound. I was indeed surprised by not only what the author wanted to surprise the reader with, but also how he brought together so many of lifes forgotten lessons. This author has a unique style and this book really never loses the reader's attention. There are so many of life's lesson to be revisted when a person reads this book. For those looking for answers this book will help. For those looking to read a book for fun, you will enjoy.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely fabulous Review: This is one of the few books that I want to re-read, and I only finished it a couple of months ago. It will absolutely make you laugh out loud. The story line is great, with mystery and all, but the themes (faith, friendship, destiny) are the real substance of the novel. Owen is so profound without being pedantic, is touching without being overly sentimental. It is a touching book that will make you fall in love with him and wish that you knew more.
Rating: Summary: One of my Top 5 of all time Review: Nothing I write here could adaquately express my proufound enjoyment of A Prayer for Owen Meany. It's not a book to be discussed, but rather a book to be experienced. Don't hesitate read it now!
Rating: Summary: One of my top 5 of all time! Review: No words I write here will be able to express my profound enjoyment of this book. This is not a book to be discussed but rather one to be experienced. Don't hesitate read it now!
Rating: Summary: Terrific Review: It took me a while to make it through this book, but I'm thankful I stuck with it. The amazing, heart-breaking ending ties the story together wonderfully. I laughed aloud at some parts, cried at others. What a terrific, imaginative story. (Just don't see 'Simon Birch' after reading this book--you'll hate the movie, which is 'suggested' by the book.)
Rating: Summary: best book ever? you decide.. Review: John Irving, it seems, loves to tell stories. Some stories come off well (eg, Son of a Circus), others flop (Hotel New Hampshire). In Owen Meany everything works; one has to been in awe of how such a story can be so brilliantly conceived and executed. I'd rather not divulge any bits of the story; read the other reviews, at your own risk, if you want to learn more. However I'd like to simply say that Owen Meany is the only book I've heard mentioned by three different friends of three different nationalities as being "the best book they've ever read". Is it the best book I've ever read? Not sure, but at least it's an honorable mention. Oh, some people might find the book offensive. It does have some foul language, sexual overtones, and makes some controversial inferences regarding Christianity. Having said this, the book is otherwise suitable to everyone over the age of 16.
Rating: Summary: The best book i've ever read. (at least 1 of them) Review: The book starts off a little slow.. DON'T STOP READING! This book will suck you in to a very powerful story.. don't pass it up (give it a try
