Rating: Summary: This Is A Must Read For Mystery Fans! Review: This is the best mystery book you could possibly buy. It has every story and book ever written about Sherlock Holmes, arguably the best and most famous fictional detective. It chronicles every adventure and every charcter, among them Moriarty, Sherlock's brother Mycroft, and Watson. My favorite part is when Sherlock and Mycroft match wits in an unspoken contest involving a man walking by on the street. If you like mysteries, buy this book. If you like collections, buy this book. If you like thick, rich plots, memorable characters, and excellent adventures, BUY THIS BOOK. This book could be given to any of you out there who appreciate a sensational read.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely classic, and still gripping in the modern day Review: In this book you will find every single Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes story, and there is no doubt that it is one of the classic reads of all time. It is complex writing, and Conan Doyle clearly had the same gift which Holmes has in the books to write such intriguing and fun solutions. Every time you read a new solution you wonder why you hadn't thought of it. Mystery writing is not easily, especially when the stories are mostly only about 25 pages long. But Conan Doyle had a supreme gift. Towards the end of his works, some of the solutions became the slightest bit far-fetched, and there are so many stories that after a while they all seem to work the same way, and a few of the later stories sound like a parody of the greatest ones, but, however there is no denying that this is a classic read, and most of the stories are utterly spellbinding.
Rating: Summary: It's All Here Review: I remember my first encounter with Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. It was just after my fifteenth birthday and I had gotten some money. I was trailing my mother through a department store, and was bored to tears, when I ran across a rack of paperback books (it was the early 1960's and there weren't bookstores all over the place, then). I'd heard of Sherlock Holmes and I'd heard of "The Hound Of The Baskervilles", but didn't know anything about either. I picked up a copy of "The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes" and was intrigued, so I also grabbed a copy of "The Hound..." and used a bit of my birthday money to buy them both. I started reading "The Hound..." in the car on the way home, and kept reading after we arrived. In fact, I couldn't put it down. I finished it before I went to sleep that night. It was the beginning of a long and satisfying acquintance. Now, all of Sir Arthur's original Holmes stories can be had right here in one complete volume. Whether you're a mystery lover, or you just like a good story, it doesn't get any better than this. What more could you ask for. I have a copy, and it's given me many hours of great reading. I think most other people will enjoy it, too. I recommend it most highly.
Rating: Summary: THE one and only CANON Review: It's amazing how many other books and films and stage performances are made about sherlock holmes, even today. one only needs to turn to these originals to understand the immense popularity of these victorian stories. most importantly, it is the characters who stand out and above. sherlock holmes and dr. john h. watson. what more can be said of them? they are simply the best! they are so real and consistant in character i can't believe they're fictional most of the time.i esp. admire that one and only sherlock holmes, justly described by his friend as "the best and the wisest man... ever knew". may the spirit of the Canon live on!
Rating: Summary: Poor binding on Doubleday hardcover edition Review: To be a well-rounded person, you must read the wonderful stories of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. You will be amazed by the number of English expressions and culural assumptions that originate in these stories. The Doubleday hardcover binding was atrocious, however. I bought this edition to read completely cover-to-cover, so I concede the edition was in for some heavy use. But the bound pages began to separate from the cover on the first day. By the time I was done. the cover was separated, and the bound pages had fallen into a number of chunks. Even the title print on the spine had been struck twice and appeared sloppy. The book was damaged beyond usefulness after one reading. Read the stories, but don't get the Doubleday hardcover.
Rating: Summary: A book for budding supersleuths Review: This is the essential collection of the adventures of the greatest detective of all time, Sherlock Holmes and his rather slow-witted foil, Dr. Watson. The atmosphere of the foggy, lacklustre streets of London, peopled by constables and hansoms, comes wafting out of these pages, as Holmes and Watson succeed in solving numerous problems, featuring some of the most memorable episodes in pop literature. Holmes is undeniably one of the most striking personages in the history of fiction. An expert fencer, boxer and an addict of "seven-percent solution" cocaine, he is eccentric, yet brilliant, patriotic, though possessed of immense analytical powers. The tales, which are, for the most part, extremely well-constructed, and are loaded with suspense and surprise, range from the adventure of "The Red-Headed League" to the "Hound of the Baskervilles" and "The Final Problem" in which Holmes engages in a deadly confrontation with his arch-enemy and, arguably, his intellectual equal, Professor Moriarty, the "Napoleon of crime".
Rating: Summary: Tribute to Dr. Joseph Bell Review: Many people do not realize that Sherlock Holmes is really based on a real person! When Doyle was attending medical school, one of his professors, Dr. Joseph Bell, could deduce the life of his patients by simple observation. This seed eventually blossomed into Sherlock Holmes. To begin with, we all know who he is and what he is about, but we can take the next step and actually read the stories behind the icon. Most Sherlockians agree that it is best not to start with "A study in Scarlet." I think it is best to start with the collection "Adventures of Sherlock Holmes," with the story "A scandal in Bohemia" then rad your way through several of the collations. then you can go back and read "A Study in Scarlet," and "The Sign of Four." Doyle's writing gets better as the stories progress, until you hit "The Hound of the Baskervilles." AS been noted, Holmes becomes a bit of an addiction. Doyle is that good of a writer. As I said, everyone knows who he is, like Tarzan, Elvis, or Madonna. The only drawback is that some of Doyle's earlier stories can get a bit tedious and somewhat formulaic at times. But the attraction is still there! Yes, it is worth the money to buy the complete Sherlock "cannon!"
Rating: Summary: Holmes - a passion Review: I won!t spend hours saying how marvelous these stories are, you can read all that in other reviews. All I want to say, is that if you start reading Sherlock Holmes stories, it will become a passion. It will give you a new way of thinking about a lot of things, and it will give yous something to do in your free time. It is also important to say here, that this unabridged edition is written in 19th century British english, and it!s really exciting to actually speak this language, because its special slang is like a landmark of the atmosphere of Victorian England. Also, you will be able to read books from great author (such as Dickens) that you thought you never would be able to understand. Sherlock Holmes is a hobby, a passion and a lifestyle

Sherlock Holmes' reasoning and brains and Watson's stupidity combine to make up some of the greatest detective stories ever written! This is a MUST GET! Can't you see what I'm saying?! BUY IT!!!!
Rating: Summary: Gripping, suspensful, and twisted 'til the last page! Review: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This guy "wrote the book" on page-turners.(literaly;-} ) You feel like you're right there with Holmes and Watson. You can hear the dog-carts as they rattle allong the dirt and cobblestone roads! You feel the cool breeze and as the book goes allong, you can't help but form your own theories! Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is remarkable; a literary genieus! you'll read for hours on end because once you start, you CAN'T stop. Sherlock Holmes is a genieus in his line but he does have a sense of humor. I have yet to find even 1 book that is more thrilling.
