Summary: My Favorite Historical Novel Ever
Review: As an avid reader of historical novels, I have never been swept into a story like The Killer Angels. While I was never much interested in the Civil War, this book was so engrossing that I have since read the 2 follow-up books to this trilogy, as well as visited Gettysburg. As for the ultimate sign of how much I have been affected by this story...my first son was born 5 months after finishing the book...I named him Joshua.

Summary: This book rocks!
Review: I read this book about three years ago, and have re-read it several times since. It is a absolutely thrilling piece of historical fiction and its value to civil war buffs should not be overlooked. For myself it sparked a obsession with the greatest trial of our nation. Absolutely Incredible!

Summary: Best historical narrative that I have read!
Review: Shaara histrionically retells the epic days of the battle of Gettysburg. He puts you into the action and lets you feel what happened. Shaara seeks to transplant you into the moment of history in a way that is both reminiscent and modern so that the reader can adapt to the environment.

Summary: 'KIller' Is An Angel of a Book.
Review: 'Killer' is an Angel of a Book By: Nick Hadsel-Mares The book Killer Angels by Michael Shaara is a masterpiece that everybody should read. This Pulitzer Prize winning novel is the story of Gettysburg told in a way that is clear concise, and incredibly readable. The Killer Angels is a classic that belongs on the shelf of every home. When I first picked up the book, I was daunted by the size of it. Three hundred and forty five pages in length is a little long but I wanted to read It because I knew next to nothing about Gettysburg. This book satisfied my every need for knowledge. It told about things from how the cannons worked to the lives of the soldiers. The book was descriptive in everything that it talked about. The genre of this book is an interesting one. It uses both historical information and fiction. This doesn't really make very much sense because history is real and you can't change it. If you think about it, just about all historical stories are fiction. They are because nobody knows the exact dialogue passed between people and so they have to make up words that they could have said. This genre is a good one because it appeals to lot of different people. It appeals to adventure readers because the story line is very intriguing and the characters are very interesting. It is also appealing to people who read war history because this book is a very detailed representation of the Battle of Gettysburg. The Killer Angels book structure is different from any other structure that I have seen. In the first few pages, they give you a short biography on each of the opposing side's commanders. I found that I was continually referring back to this information, but after a while I got everybody's names. There were the confusing names like Ewell and Early, but I got these names after a short while. The chapters were structured in a very easily readable way that went by the three days of the Battle of Gettysburg. At the beginning of each chapter, it said the name of the commander and the rest of the chapter was from that side's perspective. Every chapter it switched back and forth so you got a real idea of both sides perspectives. Even though the perspective changed every chapter I did not find it hard at all to see what is going on. Probably one of the best features of the book is the side switching idea. Even though it switches sides, the book remains in real time, which means, for example that at the end of a southern general's chapter his troops are charging up a hill. Then a new chapter begins with a Union general defending the hill from the invaders. This way of telling a story brings the reader right into the battle so that the reader can fully understand what is going on. This book is a must read for anybody interested in a historical book with great storytelling qualities.

Summary: An awsome, deep book filler with opinions and imagery.
Review: I am a 13 year old and I loved it. It was hard to read but once devoured it made you think. My favorite Civil War book so far. You should read it. It shows that the generals were not sitting around but fighting mentally if not phyisically with their soldiers.

Summary: Must read, and not just for Civil War buffs
Review: I read this book for a required book report on a pre-1865 subject for an American History class. I am not a big reader but after this one I can't wait to read Jeff's books about before and after the Battle of Gettysburg. Michael gives you a sense of what it was like to be there, I am now planning a trip to see the batlefield. He gives an insight to the men who led, but unfortunately very little about the average Johhny Reb or Billy Yank. Still a remarkable book. My wife is now reading it and she too, not even liking war-type books, can't put it down.

Summary: The best Civil War literature I have ever read, bar none.
Review: I picked up this paperback as an experienced Civil War history buff, having visited Gettysburg twice as a child growing up in NJ, followed the Life Magazine articles in the 100 year anniversary as a teenager, and had already read about a dozen different Civil War historical works.

I was absolutely entranced by the book's ability to bring me into the battle, experience the thoughts and concerns of the major characters, and learn a tremendous amount of information I had never known about the battle and those who fought it. I read the book in four days, passed it on to my father, two of my brothers, two friends, and now my daughter is using the book as her text in her college class. Everyone who has read my copy so far, Civil War buffs or not, have read the book in record time due to it's engrossing style and easy to read and comprehend content. I have not talked to anyone who has ever read the book that did not have the same impression I have had.

I took my family to Gettysburg in 1996 (I read the book the first time in late 1995), and my wife bought me the movie "Gettysburg" due to my love of the book. I have enjoyed both the book and the movie several times, and would recommend them to anyone who wants to learn about the Civil War or American History. It says an awful lot about who we are and where we came from.
