Rating: Summary: I don't get the ratings Review: I really thought this book was boring. I don't understand how people think this book is so wonderful.
Rating: Summary: Utter perfection Review: This the most insightful and historical account of Gettysburg ever published. It focuses on the battle itself but it most importantly chronicles the impact of the battle and the war on the men and the impact of the men on the war and the battle.
Rating: Summary: A masterpiece of American Literature Review: As far as historical Civil War novels are concerned, I used to think that nothing could surpass the brilliance of Bruce Catton's "A Stillness at Appomattox." Well, I picked up "The Killer Angels" after watching the movie "Gettysburg" on the July 4th weekend and I have to say that this book is now number one in my mind.Imagine someone writing a book in the year 2055 about the D-Day invasion and this book being unlike anything that you have ever read before about this much written about battle. It doesn't sound possible, does it? Well, Michael Shaara has done the equivalent of this with regards to the Battle of Gettysburg. This is a unique, fascinating, moving, beautiful novel. It's one of those ones that I will always recall when I reflect on my favorite reading experiences.
Rating: Summary: won my approval! Review: i am a high school student who at a time thought war was the most boring thing in the world to learn about. It was something only guys would be interested in, something only people who like guns and blood would be interested. Michael Shaara's The Killer Angels changed my ideas on that completely! I wanted to cry as characters I knew died for a cloudy cause that most were unsure of, characters who had wives and children at home and friends they were forced to fight against.Shaara's book gave me a thirst to learn about everything I possibly can that's not in my textbook at school because those textbooks contain all the wrong information. They tell a few statistics, who won what battles, who led which armies. Tell the heartbreaking stories of Longstreet's struggle with depression after the loss of his three children, the tragedy of Armistead and Hancock, two best friends on opposing sides. Tell the story of Reynolds, a great man with a woman waiting for him that will never see him again. The textbooks are wrong, read this book!
Rating: Summary: I loved this book! It was absolutely wonderful! Review: I'd give it 10 stars if I could! The Killer Angels is my all time favorite book! Shaara is a master at capturing the details of war and also a master at depicting the emotional trauma in the generals' minds. A wonderful book! Recommended for anyone who has the slightest interest in the Civil War.
Rating: Summary: Present History Review: With this book, Michael Shaara has become by far one of the greatest storytellers of American history. Not only is this novel hard to put down, it is hard to read only once. Shaara has the ability to put the reader on the battlefield with all the generals and soldiers, allowing you to smell the smoke from the cannons and hear the screams above the gunfire. As an American, I feel closer to the history that made this country, and I have Michael Shaara to thank for it. I only hope he'll delight us with more work written on other great moments in American history.
Rating: Summary: A true look into history! Review: Micheal Shaara's book paints such a vivid picture, it's worth 1 million or more words. Not just 1,000! I began to understand what it felt like to be a southern general, and the rest of their cause!
Rating: Summary: This was an amazing book! Review: This book was vividly described and really made me feel like I was there
Rating: Summary: Get ready to know the generals Review: The Killer Angels does an amazing job putting you in the heads of the generals that fought the battle of Gettysburg. With each chapter taking the point of view from a different person, you get to see the battle from every angle.
Rating: Summary: Great historical fiction Review: The salient feature of Mr. Shaara's work, much like that of Patrick O'Brian, is his attention to detail. From Lee's interactions with his aides, to the numerous foreign observers (Fremantle being the most obvious as he was in the movie) in the Army of Northern Virginia, to the actual song the 6th Wisconsin of Meredith's Iron Brigade played before it was engaged against Archers Brigade in McPherson's Woods (an old scottish tune "The Campbells Are Coming"). Shaara's work is exhaustively researched and a pleasure to read. My only concern with the book is that he only focuses on the actions of the main characters: Lee, Longstreet, Armistead, Buford and Chamberlain and their related battles, to the exclusion of other key moments of the battle, like the Iron Brigade's stand on McPherson's Ridge which saved the remains of the I Corps or the charge of the First Minnesota against Wilcox's Brigade on the second day which played as big a part to win Gettysburg as Little Round Top did or the repulse of the Lousiana Tigers of Early's Division as the charged against Cemetary Hill and almost overran the lynchpin of Meade's line. But enough complaining, bottom line, excellent work and a must read for any fan of the Civil War or military history in general.
