Summary: Want to witness the Civil War first hand? Read this book!
Review: I've often tried to imagine what it would have been like to fight in the battle of Gettysburg - how it would have felt to have been crouched behind a wooden rail fence with Buford's cavalry, frantically loading my rifle while under fire from hundreds of Confederate soldiers not one hundred yards away. I've wondered what it must have felt like to march with General Pickett's men during that courageous charge across the mile-long field toward the Union line, head on into a hail storm of miniballs and canister shot. I've tried to imagine what it was like to charge with the 20th Maine down the slope of Little Round Top towards the Rebels trying relentlessly to flank the Union line. Now that I've read this book I no longer need to wonder. Each and every one of us owes it to the men who fought there-Yankees and Confederates alike-to read this book, not only to better understand them and what they fought for, but to better understand ourselves as Americans.

Summary: Very real and informative, yet still exciting
Review: I originally bought this book for school, and by the time I read the first couple of chapters, I realized I had bought the wrong book. Instead of just putting it down (like I normally do when it comes to war books), I continued reading because the book had me completely captivated. I knew virtually nothing about the Civil War; by the time we studied it in my history class, I felt like I had actually been there. This book gives a very personal account of the characters that fought in the Civil War. Although some parts were somewhat slow, and the military jargon and tactics sometimes gave me a headache, I found myself literally unable to put this book down. A must for anyone who has any interest in the history of our nation!

Summary: OUTSTANDING
Review: There is nothing I can say about Sharra's work that can do it justice. This is quite simply the best work on Gettysburg (and possibly the War) I can fathom. I grew up on the battlefield and have always longed to have been there during the battle; alas, I cannot, so Killer Angels will have to suffice. If I were locked in jail I would survive if I had a copy of Killer Angels. How did he do it? (And Last Full Measure was right up there.)

Summary: Wow
Review: I was assigned this book for ninth grade English, and I loved it. Shaara puts you right in the middle of the action, and you feel as if you know the characters. This well written book made me cry along with the men in the story. I highly reccommend this book to anyone.

Summary: Every moment of this book was breath taking.
Review: My teacher assigned this book to all her A.P. students to read during the summer. I at first wasn't interested in wanting to learn about the Civil War and what happened in the past, but ater reading this book I was amazed by the extreme detail of each event Michael Shaara described. He gave the feeling of the Civil War being brought into my own room. I felt all the anguish, sorrow and fear from both the confederate and union sides. Shaara describes the lending of courage from one heart to another which bounds a humen together. If you don't read this book you will miss out on all the action packed adventure that will come alive in your very room. I know this summer my imagination went into new heigths that I have never experienced before. I wisely recommend this to those of you out there who want to experiance live history. This book has taught me that will power is what becomes the ultimate test in each battle that Shaara has described so vivedly in this book.

Summary: Excellent, but difficult to follow
Review: I just finished reading Shaara's novel Killer Angels this morning. It was an excellent book, filled with insight into the PEOPLE of the war, not just battles and historical data. However, the way Shaara presented the information was difficult to follow. He jumped from character to character, ignoring major figures like Ulysses S. Grant and General Meade, skipping to more minor figures like Chamberlain. I have to admit, however, that skipping to Chamberlain was brillint, IMHO, in the way of literary poetics. If anyone has thoughts on the book, please feel free to email me at Licorice33@aol.com.

Summary: Makes me want read about every event in history this way.
Review: Such an unbelievable way to experience history. Reading Shaara makes you forget that we were forced to learn the subject in school. I loved every page. Check out Shaara's son's two books. I'm just completing the second (The Last Full Measure). Both books do his father proud. They complete the Civil War story that his father leaves us hungry to continue.
