Rating: Summary: Biting and probably true Review: Nanny diaries has the ring of truth to it. I found it sad, AND I read it to the bitter end, because it was engaging. Many of the characters in the book are immensely self involved people, and the pain generated by their way of living was the depressing part. Not everyone would be as sensitive to the picture of life portrayed, I suspect.
Rating: Summary: Good book, but what happened to the proofreaders? Review: I was interested in the book. The authors did a great job of describing the parents and Greyer, or was it Grover, or did I miss something? Were they twins? I assume the authors changed the kid's name at the last minute but the computer didn't catch all the spots - and never the nickname "Grove." Sometimes both names were used in one line. I kept being bothered. Nor did the spell checker catch "runing" for "running" or "baek" for "back." St. Martins, your proofreaders are subversive!
Rating: Summary: This book was exceptional! Review: Not only a fun quick read, but a lesson in life. This book is not just a book for Nanny's and Rich People, but for everyone! Congradulations to two wonderful authors who really have a knack for writing!!! Hope to see some more work from you soon!
Rating: Summary: Funny yet Disturbing Review: This book definitately has lots of laugh out loud moments. Unfortunately, I could not totally enjoy those moments because I was distracted by the disturbing behavior of Mr. and Mrs. X. Are there really parents like this out there? I guess as a parent of young children myself this was too big a hump to get over in my reading. That said, this was mostly an enjoyable book. It's an easy read that will give you a taste of life among the rich in New York City.
Rating: Summary: I Wanted to Love this Book Review: As a stay-at-home father in a wealthy suburb of New York City, I am uniquely fascinated by wealthy parents who neglect their children by using hired help to take over the nurturing role. I hoped this book, written by two former nannies, would illuminate some of the mysteries of such households. "The Nanny Diaries" falls short in some respects and fulfills in others. The authors' portrait of Mr. and Mrs. X, as monstrous as the two are, rings true and is fully realized. It is especially effective on those rare occasions when Mr. X is present, notably toward the end of the book during the Nantucket vacation. Ironically, the authors are less effective at portraying Nanny. It is only at the end of the book that they adequately convey Nanny's love for Grayer. Otherwise, her staying with the abusive X family makes no sense at all. Also, Nanny's romance with HH seems there only to give the novel some heft. It might have served a better purpose if it stood in a kind of moral opposition to the Xs' morbid relationship, but it isn't thoroughly developed, nor is there reason to think it has any deeper foundation of love than the Xs' marriage. The novel does have some humor, insight, and poignancy, but it falls short of expectations.
Rating: Summary: The Nanny Diaries Review: The book was great I couldn't put it down - it gave new respect to the nannies out there and how they are treated. Rich people often think the nanny can do everything. The thing Grayer wanted most was for his father and mother to play with him and just be with him on a regular basis. There is nothing wrong with having a Nanny if you are also giving of your time and attention and not just expecting the Nanny to as in this book. Grayer just wanted his mother and father to pay him some attention and be with him. His mother and father are poor excuses for parents and that is what is wrong with the children of today's society.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful, touching and funny Review: I read this book so fast. It is a look into how the other half lives that's for sure. Nanny is basically raising the 4 year old child of two self absorbed, arrogant, ridiculously hands off parents. It was so funny yet sad to know that people like this really exist and too many children are harmed in this evironment just as easily as a child without any adavantages can be harmed. I hated to see it end and would really like to know what happens to the family and Nanny.
Rating: Summary: Can't believe it--Gotta believe it Review: I was--still am--enthralled. Just could not put this book down and got up this morning before 5 to finish it before work. Well written. Covers every emotion from humor to disgust to shock. Above all, empathy and sadness for Grayer/Grover who won my heart. (I was telling myself to relax! He's a fictional character, not a real child.) I will label this book The Perfect Summer Read!
Rating: Summary: Really undeveloped characters Review: If the authors are trying to write an expose`, then they should just tell some juicy gossip in article or short story format. As a piece of fiction, this book is very unpolished. After reaching the end of this book, I'm still not sure who the MAIN character was. Certain major characters (such as H.H., Mr. X, and Ms. C) are completely undeveloped and the seams between the two different authors' (and their ghost writer's) writing styles are glaringly obvious. I only finished the book because I hoped it would get better (it didn't). I immediately gave away the book. I know this book has gotten a lot of publicity, but don't be a sheep. Don't waste your time.
Rating: Summary: A Winner! Review: This book was just so good! I couldn't put it down and I have a 9 week old baby, but I managed to find time to finish it in about 3 days. It made me cry at the end and very few books have ever done that. I was so sad for Grayer, who got attached to nannies and his parents sent them away. I also cried for Nanny, who loved Grayer and would never see him again. And I cried for all the little children who are actually living lives like that. This book is a fast read, very entertaining, funny, maddening, heart wrenching.... I could go on and on... but just read it and see for yourself.
