Rating: Summary: I can't remember when I laughed so hard Review: I swear this book was written about my former boss. She was Mrs. X to a T, from having a very busy day (doing what?) to stocking the pantry with organic everything. Her nanny was forever asked to do some of the things that Nanny in the book is and then Mrs. X would get exasperated about not being able to find competent help. This is the kind of book you shouldn't read before going to bed, it's too funny and you'll never be able settle down to sleep.
Rating: Summary: Great book! Review: I loved this book! I could not put it down. I finished it a few days ago and I'm still thinking about all the characters. Highly recommended!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Good read Review: This was a good book. It was very funny and touching. I cried in the end.
Rating: Summary: hysterically funny and tragically sad Review: I read this book at one sitting (staying up until 5am to finish it!). While it was really, really funny in many places, I kept reminding myself that it was actually very sad. I wish some of the moms out there who never spend time with their kids would read this and see themselves and be ashamed.
Rating: Summary: Like Watching a train wreck that runs out of a steam Review: I really enjoyed reading this book. The writing was sharp and the story a fun insight into modern upperclass New York City life. Mrs. X is cold and unsympathetic of course. Nan's grandma is warm and wonderful. I looked forward to reading this book every chance I got to see what Nan would have to put up with next and if there'd be any bombshell showdowns. However, without spoiling it for others, I wasn't satisfied with the story's contrived climax or ending. Still, I would recommend this book to read.
Rating: Summary: Fast read... hilarious and sweet...guys, don't bother Review: McLaughlin and Kraus have enlightened the dark interiors of limos, high rise apartments, and the machinations of a heartless woman, Mrs. X, who relies erroneously on what "looks" good. The pricier, the better. She is one who will spend thousands for the "right" shopping bag. Throughout the text, you just want to slap her silly. Trouble with that is the fact that she is so remote and doesn't light long enough to get off a good whack. But then it wouldn't be anymore fun. These two authors have also touched on the romance and whimsy of meetings by chance that are far more tintlilating in one's imagination than are ever in real life. All the above makes for great escapist reading. I have known Nanny. She is a well-meaning, hard-working college girl who knows she will move past this brief horror flick of an existence and land on her feet. What is sad, is that I know several Mrs. X wannabees. Several are very lucky: they surrounded by an old and faithful coterie of friends who are quick to knock them off their high horses before they are able to make complete fools of themselves. This kind of behavior is not pretty in the real world. The good news: there are far more "nannies" in this world than there are Mrs. Xes'.
Rating: Summary: Interesting, exasperating and nothing near its namesake Review: Smoothly read, it is an interesting read but nothing near the Bridget Jones books. Its not funny. Actually it's quite sad. Really not worth it. (this is about the audio version of the book)
Rating: Summary: This is a terrific book! Review: I have enjoyed reading "The Nanny Diaries". The comical character Nanny really deals with some typical nanny issues, as well as ones that I thankfully have never dealt with. Bravo Emma and Nicola! This book really is for anyone that enjoys laughing.
Rating: Summary: True to Life: Kinda Freaky-- but in a good way Review: Having recently been a nanny for an affluent family originally from New York, I found the description and detail greatly entertaining. From the Manolo Blaniks to the Spencer school, it all inhabits the life of New York's high-society. At times the description was a bit too much if you can believe that...but a great 3 night read. Bravo to McLaughlin and Kraus on their premier piece of fiction and congratulations to them on their sale of the movie rights to this book as well.
Rating: Summary: I know the X's! Review: I lived in NYC and this book is so sadly believable! I know a woman just like Mrs. X (my ex.'s sister). She lives in a penthouse over looking central park - the house is constantly filled with staff one to do the laundry and cook, another to keep the kids out of their parents way, a male personal assistant to keep her company, [kiss up to her], and to have an affair with, a husband completely involved with work and very absent from the family, and 2 children starved for their parents attention and affection. I cringed when Mrs. X states that she is pregnant again. People like this should not have children! The X's certainly didn't respect their Nanny's so why should the Nanny's respect the X's privacy. This is a story that needed telling! I think I will mail this book to the X's I know - but they probably won't get it.
