Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Coldn't put it down! Review: In her debut novel, Sue Monk Kidd creates a buzzing tale of love, family, and feminine strength. Along with Harper Lee's Scout, Lilly Owens is an adolescent character that makes you want to cheer for the underdog. With the guidance of her care-giver, Rosaleen, the calendar sisters and the Madonna she is able to ignore social truths and overcome the tragedy involving her mother and follow her heart and instinct to find family, love and, ultimately, happiness. This book will not spend much time on the shelf. If it makes it there, you'll want to pick it up to read again, or pass it on to your sister, mother, or best friend so that they too can take the journey with Lilly. This is a story for the females of all generations. No matter your age, you'll want to cheer for Lilly, cheer for love, cheer for life. Sue Monk Kidd's novel does fly high and truly puts a little honey in the hearts of all.

I had always found her writing to be down-to-earth and yet inspiring. I also have a fascination for learning life lessons from the "real world" of animals -- so a book with Kidd as author and a theme centered on bee-keeping immediately drew me in. I expected something interesting and uplifting, but I was amazed by the literary quality of what I read. The characters breathe and have distinct voices that involve the reader immediately in their world. Kidd paints with poignancy the reality of childhood pain tempered with humanity's best coping mechanism -- humor. The book invites you, like Lily, to discover that you can think and feel at the same time. I encourage you to travel along with her on the journey to discover the truth about life's mysteries.
Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: BORING Review: I have no idea as to why so many readers enjoyed this novel. I found the story and it's characters dull and predictable. Please stop insulting the genius of Harper Lee by favorably comparing this novel to To Kill A Mockingbird.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Pleasantly stinging Review: This book was a wonderful read with a beautifully moving plot and compleeing characters. Reminds me a bit of To Kill A Mockingbird. The main character is easy to empathize with and you will continue to hold out the best for her. This is no fairytale; however, the path is troublesome, dangerous and full of emotion, but at the same time is an uplifting encounter of a young girl trying to find her place.
Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: GIVE ME A BREAK!! We've read this way too many times before. Review: I cannot believe that a majority of the costomer reviewers enjoyed this no good piece of junk. Suffice it to say, THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES is nothing but 320 pages of a 95-paged story that has been written over and over again, about someone waiting to be saved by Prince Charming from the burning fire.As far as I am concerned with Lily Owens, throrughout the book following her mother's death, she cries again and again about it, giving me one heck of headache. She needs a reality check almost as badly as Michael Jackson. In fact, she also needs to realize that Death is a brazen serial murderer that doesn't care as to whom it takes off of this planet. She should've just forgotten her mother's demise and continued her miserable life. And as far as I'm concerned with Sue Monk Kidd, she's a writer with mediocre word choice. It is so mediocre than even a 7th-Grader could write 10 times better than her. Basically, THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES is not worth the paper printed on. Sue Monk Kidd is, as well, doesn't have what it takes to compete with the "Big Boys" and is a disgrace to the writing business.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Well written book that stays with you... Review: I immediately fell in with these characters. The life of Lily 'beat me down', but also made me remember that there are certain things you just have to do as a teen. Each of the characters tug at your heart as the story plays out. The story is uplifting and disheartening at the same time, and leaves you wondering about Lily and the sisters for days afterwards. I still wonder at the sensuality of this book, and it somehow reminds me of 'Song of Solomon' by Toni Morrison.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Awesome book Review: I picked this book up last year on the recommendation of one of the ladies working in a bookstore...just got around to reading now. For me, when a book is really, really good, I can picture everything very clearly. It's like I've just been to see the movie, instead of reading the book. This was one of those books. It was well written and I can't think of one thing I didn't like about it. It was so well written that I felt like I was there, with Lilly. I was in the pink house, I could feel how hot it was in South Carolina, I could picture everyone of the "Daughters" in my head. The book was so good that it makes me wish I could go there....to the pink house....and live a day or two with August, June, May, Rosaleen and Lilly!

The character development is good, and I find myself thinking of those beekeeping sisters even now - 2 months after I finished reading the book. Thumbs up.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: So Much Better Than TV Review: Since every TV series I fall in love with gets cancelled after two episodes, I have recently become an avid reader. I have found my taste is far more in touch with mainstream readers than whoever the Neison Families are that govern TV. Of the mainstream books that have been recommended I have enjoyed four out of five (loved "My Fractured Life", liked "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" and "Bleachers", and couldn't finish "Life of Pi"). "Secret Life of Bees" is one of the books that I not only enjoyed but really fell in love with. This is the kind of book that makes me happy to not be watching so much television anymore. I feel like I gain something by reading books like these.
