Rating: Summary: I liked it Review: I thought this book was a fun, fast read. It's not terribly deep or meaningful, but if you want something to read at the beach or by the pool- this is it. Lots of fashion speak and girly stuff. I'd recommend it to a friend.
Rating: Summary: dont stop shopping untill you get this book Review: This book totaly brings out the most reserved crowds of new york in a brilliant and amusing tale of a bergdorf babe.As for Plum Sykes, she pulls of her first book like a pro
Rating: Summary: This book is UN-READABLE Review: As I began to read this book, I couldn't help but wonder if it was written by a 10 year old. The style of writing is so sophomoric and simple. I expected to subject matter to be inconsequential and fluffy (and it is) but the writing is just downright BAD. What a shame. I was anticipating a light, fun read like The Nanny Diaries. This book is horrible.
Rating: Summary: Lifestyles of the rich and not so famous Review: 'Bergdorf Blondes' is a worthy first effort by Plum Sykes. You can really feel the personal writing style, however this book is not without fault. There are a few choppy bits, and the editing wasn't on top of the game. Some of the chartacter development is also quite weak--as in, I didn't "care" what happened to some of the characters. That said, the book is actually quite fun and a quick read. I believe it helps if the reader is already somewhat aware of the PAP (Park Avenue Princess) jargon and read a few fashion mags or society pages along the way. Otherwise, I imagine one wouldn't care at all about the content.
Rating: Summary: Funny Review: I think this book is very clever and interesting to be in the shoes of a high-class, rich "princess"
Rating: Summary: Major disappointment Review: I have no axe to grind vis a vis "princesses" of any type-I was just expecting a funny, breezy read, that's all. In my opinion the author failed at that mighty task. And although I'm a little sarcastic, it IS just about the hardest thing to do-write light, chicklit fiction WELL. Sorry, it's just not very good. She seems to run out of ideas, steam and anything new and funny after the first 20 pages or so; from that point on it's repetitive, the characters have nothing new to say, funny or not, and it just goes nowhere-even so, you can see every plot device coming a mile away. All of that is of course forgiveable if it's very cleverly done. This isn't, no matter what Ms. Sykes' pals and peers have to say to the contrary(and isn't it funny that most of the virulently defensive reviews of this book are by residents of "NYC"? Hmmm). This should have been a $12.95 trade paperback, not a "major" novel with a reported $650,000 advance! It's just not worthy-of being bought at this price OR read. Trust me, any month's issues of W, Vogue, Vanity Fair etc. will get you more entertainment bang for your presumably hard-earned bucks. By the by-also read online that Plum's had problems getting usually hungry L.A. studio development people to bite on this one and option it for a "major motion picture". Guess there's hope for Hollywood yet. You can't fool ALL of the people all of the time, can you?
Rating: Summary: Flighty Fabulous Fun Review: For those expecting an anthropological/sociological a la Margaret Meade look at the Upper East Side, you will be disappointed. For those looking for a fun, tongue-in-cheek, fashion obsessed read this is it. Although Moi, the story's protagonist, aspires to all the Park Avenue Princess trappings, she clearly gets the absurdity of it all while still being sucked into its web. For a Midwestern girl such as myself, this book was a treat. Ms. Sykes, please keep them coming! Happy reading.
Rating: Summary: Bergdorf Blondes Review: This is a "read in one sitting"...the constant ups and downs of the lead character leave you in suspense. She is an Everywoman (whether the reader is a fashionista or not)--the quest for love, the quest for friendship, the quest for beauty and style. Plum Sykes, when can we expect novel#2?
Rating: Summary: You won't believe the author went to Oxford...I want proof Review: I was hoping for an intelligent gal's guide to frivolous notions, like hair and designer jeans, but this did not deliver in any sense. Naturally I didn't read it because I thought it was going to cause some critical thinking, but even for a book like "this", it's just plain stupid. I had to finish it because I wasted the money on a brand new copy for which I should receive the stupidity award. I couldn't grasp that a Park Avenue Princess (aka Julie Bergdorf) would speak like a valley girl, I thought being a P.A.P. would mean being educated at some fine institutions, but it figures if the author went to Oxford then there is no hope. Judy Blume writes better novels for teenagers.
Rating: Summary: What did you expect? Garcia Marquez? Review: This is a fun book which you have to take with a grain of salt. I laughed out loud many times and was thoroughly pleased with this "junk food for the brain"...so the negative reviews only make me shake my head in wonder. With a title like "Bergdorf Blondes" what did you expect ....Shakespeare? My suggestion to all is to not complain and take Ms. Sykes debut for what it is, escapism with a healthy dose of NY socialite gossip. Anyone who expects deep thoughts and pondering over New York Society is in for a disappointment, but then in hindsight, you deserve a disappointment; no Jane Austin book would be called "Bergdorf Blondes" kiddies. Cheers!
