Rating: Summary: This is a must have for any library!! Review: I read this book over and over as a child and thought I would never find another copy. The school library copy is rather worn and well-loved. I figured anyday I would come back and find it gone. I loved every story, and every character. I can't wait to pass the excitement I found in this book onto my children.
Rating: Summary: A great favorite Review: This book was a great favorite of mine growing up! I was tickled pink to see that it is still available. The original childhood copy disintegrated long ago, literally being read to pieces by my sister and me.
Rating: Summary: THIS IS THE GREATEST GREEK MYTHOLOGY BOOK!!! Review: This is great for kids. It explains heroes and deeds of noteable myths. Funny, sad, happy everything is in this book. *I have it, I LOVE it!*
Rating: Summary: One of the best books of my childhood Review: This was one of the books that I learned to read with back in 1967(down with Dick & Jane! yay Greek myths and archaeology!). I read the stories countless times, imitated the illustrations, wished I lived in ancient Greece, etc. It's still my reference book on Greek mythology because it's so clearly presented. Every kid can get something out of it.
Rating: Summary: One book my 8 year old son could not put down Review: During the summer of '98 I tried all kinds of books for my son to read. He generally enjoys being read to but with this book I would find him curled up in a chair reading it by himself and then telling me what he read. It was a hard read aloud book if you cannot pronouce those Greek names. I wish there was a pronunciation sound track with this book.
Rating: Summary: Every kid should have this great book Review: I really love this book because there are so many things that were new to me. There are so many great Greek Myths in this book, that even though I read it all the time, I haven't memorized them all. I thought I knew a lot about Greek Myths before I got this book, but now I know a ton more than I did before.I think every kid that likes Greek Myths should have this book!
Rating: Summary: one of the best books of my childhood Review: I first found this book in 1968, when I was 8 years old. I checked it and the Norse mythology book out repeatedly over the next 10 years because I loved it dearly and also to use as a basis for at least one A+ report a year throughout grade and high school. That copy wore out many years ago, but not before I could introduce my oldest daughter to it. Now it is my youngest daughter's turn and here I am to buy it!
Rating: Summary: My favorite book since I was very young. Review: I credit this book with beginning my interest in the classics. Because of it, I love Greek and Roman civilization, took 8 years of Latin and Greek, and grew up understanding a lot about human nature. Every child should read this. The drawings are delightful, I still remember every illustration.
Rating: Summary: A Mythology Must Review: Ingri and Edgar D'Aulaire were among the first authors to present children's biographies in a shorter, fully illustrated format accessible to younger readers. They received the Caldecott Medal for their biography of Abraham Lincoln and also wrote and illustrated the histories of other famous Americans. But their most notable work may be this excellent collection of Greek myths, first published in 1962, and still a respected standard today. The entire world of the Greek gods is laid out in an orderly fashion, from the oldest stories of Mother Earth and the Titans to Zeus and his family, and on to the minor gods and the mortal descendants of Zeus. All the stories are here, including Pandora's box, King Midas, Oedipus, Jason and the Golden Fleece, and the transition from Greek gods to Roman ones. Illustrations enhance almost every page, many in color, some in black and white, and some in black on tan, which lends an ancient air. The stories themselves are simply written, with the text set off by wide borders of white space. A thorough index is appended, defining each god or goddess as well as locating their stories within the collection. From Achilles to Zeus, a book to savor and save for future generations.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic! Review: I cannot imagine my childhood without remembering this book. It was the first one that I fell in love with. I read it repeatedly, until each tale was as familiar as any other regular aspect of my life. Even the dimmest imagination is brought to full flame with the lucid prose and evocative imagery. An amazing collection of human and godly flaws and attributes - a faithful and true rendition of the real purpose of myth.
