Rating: Summary: Get it now! Review: I loved these books as I child; and now that I have children to purchase for, my literary regret is that I cannot get a copy of the Norse gods and goddesses! So I quickly bought up this book to save for when she is older. Do not be put off by any negative reviews about the artwork: good or bad it will forever imprint with the legends and provide another world to place the stories. Get a copy for your child, even if it's just a newbie, because it may go out of print and you will have to settle for second best to introduce your child to the beauty of greek mythology; some of those alternative books are too dry to plant imagination seeds.
Rating: Summary: Encyclopedic Review: This book is oversized and has 192 pages. It is fairly comprehensive of the major and lesser figures in Greek mythology. It includes timeless stories about these beings. Because of the tremendous influence that Ancient Greek culture has had on western civilization, to this day, this volume is undoubtedly useful--a treasure.I disagree with the comments on the art by other reviewers. Some of the art is truly wonderful, but other illustrations are not attractive. Generally, the simple line drawings and monochrome illustrations are far better than the full color illustrations, where the use of color sometimes assaults the eye (and sensibilities). For an introduction to Ancient Greece and its mythology, I'd recommend something else (like Greek Gods and Goddesses....... For a children's reference book, this is the one to have.
Rating: Summary: A Gem For All Ages Review: I am so glad that I found this book again. I owned it as a child and over the years it was misplaced. This book has to be if not the best then one of the best books of classical mythology for children. It is also an excellent primer for adults who want a solid overview of Greek mythology. It begins with the Greek myth of Creation and tells all of the better known stories of Greek myth. The stories, though at times complex, are easy to follow even for a child. Also, the illustrations are absolutely wonderful and vivid. This book was a great help with several elementary and high school projects. Now in college, I have run across others who also remember this book fondly as 'the big yellow book ' that they had as a child. I believe it should be an essential part of any child's library, and also makes a great resource for any adult interested in Greek mythology.
Rating: Summary: Timeless Review: This is truly a timeless book for children. I remember poring over this book throughout my childhood. It gave me a solid foundation on all Greek mythlogy later on in my education; I remembered the descriptions of the diffent gods came in handy as I read the Illiad and The Odyssey in high school and college. The structure of the book facilitates the understanding of how the greek gods are related and how they gave rise to the different heroes and myths. I still remember the classic illustrations in this book and the imprint it left on me.I had been searching for the ideal present for my nephew and I was glad to see this book is still in print.
Rating: Summary: Confusing and Disappointing Review: I gave this book only 2 stars because I wanted to learn a lot more about Greek mythology - but the stories were confusing and I found it difficult to keep the characters straight. I have read reviews that said this book was great for children, but I am not so sure of that. There is a lot of sexual hanky-panky between brothers and sisters and some other characters that even as an adult gave me pause. The illustrations were disappointing, I didn't like the artists' styles at all. I thought they were too primative - but, this is a matter of personal taste. I understand from the jacket blurb that this was a true labor of love for the authors who drew the pictures and wrote the text with painstaking research. I am very sorry to give this such a mediocre review - but I honestly don't think any kid would enjoy this and it takes quite a bit of work for an adult to even understand a lot of it. I kept putting the book down because of this, and it took me weeks to read it. I usually can finish a book easily in a week. I picked this book precisely because I hoped it would explain Greek mythology in an idiot-proof, simple way, but it was complicated -- and perhaps that is just the nature of the beast!
Rating: Summary: Not just for kids! Review: We recently received our D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths. Needless to say, the illustrations are stunning. The content is a bit "deep" for a young child. I was hoping for an easy introduction to Greek Myths for a 7yo. While interesting and VERY educational, this is pretty in depth. That is a good thing, in that we will be using this book for many years to come! I know that I certainly learned much I had forgotten or didn't know! Will make a wonderful reference book for the older child. It builds on each chapter, branching out with more in depth information so you will learn where each Greek character fits into the whole scheme. This is an excellent book, not my favorite D'Aulaire book however. It is, after all, a D'Aulaire.. you can't go wrong!
Rating: Summary: D'aulaire's Book of Greek Myths Review: I received this book as a gift from my mother, when I was much, much younger. I loved it! To the Best Of My Memory, this book did a great job of explaining not only the Greek Gods and their descendants, but also the connections between them. It also features minor Gods, which is a great feature. It has been at least 20 years since I first read this book, and I can still remember this lovely book.
Rating: Summary: Favorite book as child Review: I checked this book out from the library at least a half a dozen times when I was a kid. I just loved it. The pictures are great, the stories are well told and easy to understand. I might just buy it for myself now, just to relive childhood memories and enjoy it once again.
Rating: Summary: A classic for all ages Review: As with so many other reviewers, I also became addicted to Greek mythology and mythology and folk tales in general, thanks to this book. It's remarkable but true: the pictures do stay with you for the rest of your life! I was looking on Amazon for a book on Greek mythology to recommend for young readers, and as soon as I saw this book's cover I recalled it even though it's been over fifteen years. Obviously this book comes highly recommended. I would also like to recommend another book by the D'Aulaires, called D'Aulaire's Norse Gods and Giants, and the many enjoyable books by Ruth Manning-Sanders, which can introduce your child to the wonderful myths and tales of many other cultures. I think you will find Manning-Sanders at your local library.
Rating: Summary: This book is WONDERFUL!!!!! Review: This book tells all of the great stories about the Greek Gods and Goddesses of Olympus! I first read the book when I was very little, and the stories simply enthralled me. I had lost the book for many years and finally found it again and remembered all of the great stories and beautiful drawings in it. This book really is a treasure and one of the most interesting books on mythology that I have ever read, (and I took a mythology course in college). Anyway, if you have some interest or none at all in Greek mythology, buy this wonderful book and you will either expand your interest or create it!!! It is excellent!!
