Summary: I think this book is great
Review: I think this book is great. I think it should receive a silver medal. In this book a boy named Jared has creepy things going on in his house. Jared and his brother and sister try to find out why weird things are happening. They find and old book and find out that the strange things happening are from ornery brownies that do not want them there. I read the second book to, The Seeing Stone. The second book is just as good as the first book. I can't wait for the third book.

Summary: Creative & Entertaining!
Review: Everything changed for the Grace children after their mother and father divorced. Leaving their tiny New York apartment to move into their Aunt Lucinda's creepy Victorian mansion was not what Jared Grace considered a good change, but no one asked his opinion. His mother said it was for the best because Jared had broken a classmate's nose at his old school and would have been expelled if they hadn't been moving. She also told Jared that he needed to find a way to deal with his anger like his siblings. His older sister Mallory dealt with it by focusing on her fencing and his twin brother Simon dealt with it by making new pets. Jared didn't have any hobbies and usually ended up spending time alone.

Jared tried to make the best of his new home, but it was really creepy. It sounded like there was a squirrel trapped in the walls, too. When Jared, Mallory and Simon followed the sounds in the walls, they found a little nest of strange objects and decorations. They figured that if they got rid of the nest, the pesky squirrel would leave too. Only it wasn't a squirrel, as they found out when Mallory woke up the next morning with her hair tied to the bedposts. The next morning Simon found his new tadpoles frozen in the ice cube trays and the kitchen covered in trash. Everyone blamed Jared, even though he told them over and over again that it wasn't him.

Frustrated and alone, Jared decided that the riddle he found in the old library had to solve his problem and prove that he wasn't doing these pranks. "In a man's torso you will find My secret to all mankind If false and true can be the same You will soon know of my fame Up and up and up again Good luck dear friend" was written on a scrap of paper and was his only clue to catching whomever was doing all of this. Jared solved the riddle and triumphantly told Mallory and Simon that it wasn't a squirrel in their walls, but a boggart - a type of fairie - according to the book that he found, The Field Guide. What he didn't know was solving the first riddle was just the beginning of their problems...

The Field Guide is Book 1 in the Spiderwick Chronicles and it was an entertaining book. It is quite short, only 107 pages, with large type, small pages and lots of black and white illustrations so it is geared for younger readers. My only issue with that is that the authors use a lot of pretty advanced vocabulary words for targeting to the 9-12 age group, but it is a good chance to expand your child's word skills. That aside, the illustrations are lovely and very well done. I feel that the way the book was bound and laid out really add to the whole tale. The story is short, but full of small puzzles and riddles that children will delight in solving. Simply a delightful fantasy read.

Summary: The Field Guide (Book 1)
Review: Mallory Grace, and her twin brothers, Jared & Simon, have just moved into a Victorian style mansion with their mother. Strange things start to happen when the children hear noises in the walls. Upon investigation, they discover a "nest", a hidden room, and the Field Guide. Then, it goes downhill from there. The kids are mildly taunted in the middle of the night by an unseen force. Jared is the only one who seems to have an idea of what's going on, yet gets blamed for all the troublesome acts.

I don't want to say much more, for fear of giving anything away.

This book was VERY good and it's the 1st of 5 books in the series. I'm almost 28, and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's not a long book (107 pages), but it's still QUITE good, and inexpensive. It's a fast read, but it never gets dull. And, I was surprised at the humor inside. I actually caught myself laughing quietly to myself while reading this.

This book isn't exactly like "The Series Of Unfortunate Events". Trust me I love that series also and I guess in a way it's similar, but the storylines are more "other worldly" than that series. And, this book has great illustrations also. There are many pictures, inside, including riddles, and maps, and of course- little creatures.

I definitely give this book 5 stars, and I am looking forward to reading the second book! I hope this review was helpful.

Summary: STRANGE HARASSMENTS
Review: The constantly ignored and underappreciated Jared Grace, his amateur animal expert twin brother Simon, and their slightly older fencing sister have moved into a decrepit Victorian style house with their mother after a messy divorce. They've been allowed to stay in the former residence of their great-aunt Lucinda, whose current domicile is in an insane asylum. From the get-go Jared senses something amiss with the old house when he hears a scuttling within its walls, as though a small animal were moving about in them. After finding the nest of some sort of creature within the walls, a nest which appears to be made by something intelligent, with newspaper clippings and cockroaches strung on a line, well, let's just say the mystery deepens. And what's a tale in ruined house like this without secret passages and rooms. It's all here. Something seems to be angry at the children and begins to take it out on them. Maybe a book Jared found in the attic called "Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You" will help them find out who or what is venting its rage at the kids.

This first of a projected series of five books for children 6-10 years old is a recommended read. It has an exciting plot and some suspense and some little scares, such as when Jared is winched up by his brother and sister in a dumbwaiter in pitch blackness with something hammering on the top of it, trying to get in. It has funny bits, and the fact that the family's father left them adds emotional depth for older readers. Book I throws in a little mystery and deduction as the kids, especially Jared, try to find out what is going by using clues left by an unknown hand. This was a fun book for the young and the young at heart.
