Summary: Spiderwick is awesome!
Review: This book was so cool! I loved this book. The drawings are beautiful and add excitment to the story. Book 1 is a cool mystery kind of book where the kids are trying to find out what is making noises and hiding in the walls and stuff in their old aunt's house. I love Thimbletack! I wish all of the things that happened to the kids in the book would happen to me. I am so excited that this is a series because I can't wait to read more.

Summary: Where's the rest of the book?
Review: I read this book to see if it would be appropriate for my first grader and I liked the story and will let her read it. The artwork is really wonderful and the story has promise but it is so short!!! There is an old house, three children and fairy mischief but the action barely gets started in this book. I would recomend it for a younger reader who may get frustrated by reading a longer story. The artwork and story are great but it only got 3 stars because there's not much content for the price.

Summary: mega awesome book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Review: I am 7 years old and it was so good that I read it in 2 days. It was scary, adventurous, exciting, and it really intrigued me. I can't wait to read all the rest of the books.

Summary: Pretty good, but...
Review: Overall this book was a good read. My main complaint is that with all the wonderful artwork, there is little room left for story. Overall I read this quickly in one sitting, guessing that there may have been somewhere between 30 and 50 pages of text (and small pages at that). Don't get me wrong, the artwork is great, but I would rather have had a more meaty story and less things to look at. And I did enjoy the book, and have bought the other two books already.

Summary: Dat was da bomb, dude!!
Review: This comes from frag-reader Griff-dog, who reads thousands of books a year. I rate this as worth 2 kegs of mulled cider!!!

Summary: Doesn't get more enjoyable then this!
Review: We love this series. Since we school, we read and read and read and have our own library! This is one that will be on the shelves 20 years from now for our grandkids, to enjoy! Excited Teacher

Summary: He Couldn't Put it Down!
Review: My third grader has finally gotten enthusiastic about reading. He told the babysitter he was going to bed, closed his door, and stayed up for two hours to finish the book!!!!! He loved it and is begging for the rest of the series.

Summary: Fairly disappointing.
Review: I went into this book knowing quite a bit about Holly Black. I was less than thrilled at the Series of Unfortunate Events similarities upon looking at the cover, but decided to give it a shot regardless.

The main problem with these books is that the author has allowed herself to fall into a common pitfall that children's authors have. The three children are each characterised by one specific trait. The girl likes fencing, and that seems to be all she likes. She has no other personality traits whatsoever. A love for a certain sport does not a personality make, I am afraid. One of the boys likes animals very much, and so this is all he talks about. All he does, in fact, is sit around liking animals. Secondary characters in literature are so often characterised by traits like this that it is hard to be surprised when it happens, but it is still disappointing.

The story itself is cute, and I have no doubt that someone younger than myself would have been more enthusiastic about it. I prefer children's literature to any other genre, but found this book (and its sequel) just a bit of a let down. There really was no climax, though the sequel does shape things up a bit.

The illustrations are wonderful. Tony DiTerlizzi has a very strong style that I really enjoy. I prefer the pen and ink drawings to the full colour spreads, but that isn't really the point.

Using the tag "Close the book", I feel, is simply a rip-off of Lemony Snicket's pessimistic warnings to children not to read his books. Running with that idea was simply tacky of Black and DiTerlizzi.

I wouldn't warn anyone against reading these books. They're a cute, simple read for an afternoon, but don't expect much.

Summary: I was blown away by how good the book was........
Review: I was drawn instandly to the book by the cover illustration. I felt as if it leaped right out at me. I brought it home to read to my chldren, planning on the usually one chapter a night at bedtime but it turned out to be one non-stop read for us. We could not put it down. At the end, the three of us sat there begging for more. Thank goodness it is only book one of five.

Summary: What can I say?
Review: My 9 year old daughter is crazy about animals and I can't seem to get her to read books other than Pony Pals, Animal Ark, and some other Dolphin series books. I mean, she does not even like Harry Potter. I got her this book in hope of adding variety to her readings. To my surprise, she loved it. In fact, she kept asking me for the 3rd - 5th books which have not been released yet. What can I say ... 5 star to any non-animal book that captures my daughter's interest.
