Summary: A thrilling, and eerily romantic book that tears the soul...
Review: Louisa May Alcott's undiscovered novel proved to be a hidden treasure! On the surface this is a shocking novel of suspense and passion. Yet beneath the twisted obsessions of Phillip and the flights of Rosamond, lurks the soul of a truly passionate and romantic novel! The romance between Phillip and Rosamond is simply the cheap adoration of a young, inexperienced girl who is taken advantage of by a truly conniving and psychotic man. So it is not of the romance between them that I speak, but the mature holy love that exists between Ignatious and Rosamond. Rosamond's love for her priest is the passionate and matured love of a young woman, rather than the confused conflicting emotions of a deprived child. The true love that Rosamond discovers in the secret, simple love of a honest and good man sets her free from the ties that bind her to her ex-lover. I loved the ending, and thought it most fitting that Phillip was the one to destroy her. Ultimatly she belonged to noone but herself, and Ignatious whose holy love freed her heart and her soul. This is a great book, and is not hard to read as some of the classic author's novels tend to be. This is a daringly modern book even today- and it was written over 100 years ago! Alcott should have been applauded for this gutsy and darkly romantic piece of work. The best way to celebrate Alcott's finally published pride and joy is simply to read and love it-as I clearly do

Summary: Give it a try!
Review: Most of the people don't seem to get the taste of A LONG FATAL LOVE CHASE. It's excellent!!!!! It's about a girl, named Rosamond, who like us wanted freedom. Her wish comes true when a mysterious stranger, Phillip Tempest, comes to her island, and fall in love with her. She loved him as well, and everything was happy for almost an year, until Rose discovers that Tempest really had another wife and a child, LITO(one of my favt character) She then runs away, trying to be free again. She flees to Paris, Germany... etc. She befriend Honorine. And then she flees to asylum, and a priest named IGNATIUS(my favt character!!!), loves her tries to give her a hint not to trust anybody, but at that time she didnt like him very much, and then she feels very bad when Father Dominic betrays her. She will go to Comte's home, and will be happy for sometime, but this chase seems like it never ends! Then Tempest, will bring her home, and make sure she will be happy, but soon after, IGNATIUS, her only friend left comes her takes her with him. They go to Mrs. Tempest, and they will meet LITO again....discover.

Although, Tempest is an antagonist, I like him all the better, cause, he only did for her LOVE. And purly, is the LOVE so strong between ROSE AND IGNATIUS! Although he is a priest, he will like her all the better, goes with the teaching of the great preacher Martin Luther.

Summary: A Long Fatal Love Chase
Review: My book club decided to read this book on a whim, and we all just loved it. It wasn't the most itellectual book we've ever read, but it was a page turner. Unlike today's romance novels, this one had a true innocence and sweetness to it. We were all surprised at the ending too. If you're looking for a Pulitzer Prize winner this isn't it, but if you want a book to spirit you away for a little while then definately read this book.

Summary: More complex than it seems
Review: On the surface it appears to be a rather dramatic, simple tale of a wronged woman, and a pursuing husband. When you look below though, many questions are raised that were real problems in Alcott's day. What rights do women have? Who is the one to take custody of an innocent child? Should a priest remain chaste against his desire? Is it right to wish for adventure and pleasure at the cost of your soul?

These are all ideas and questions that bear considering, even in our day, when we think we've solved all these problems. Altogether an intriguing book that does not only involve and absorb, but makes for interesting thought.

Summary: Breathtakingly romantic.
Review: Romance, thrilling adventure, and true, gut-wrenching emotion-- this novel by Louisa May Alcott pushes the envelope. Tempest: a man ruled by passion, cruelty and deceit. Rosamond: a young woman, innocent, beautiful, and strong-willed. Tempest seduces fair Rosamond (and the reader) with his devastating charm, mystery, and dangerous good looks. When Rosamond learns of Tempest's treacherous secrets, she vows to escape from his lies. Unfortunately, Tempest is intrigued and further impassioned by the chase as he promises to win her back, at all costs. Determined to break her wild spirit, Tempest succeeds in alienating Rosamond from others. Despite some slow moments, this book is overflowing with action and excitement. The chase is an interesting one and the ending is thoroughly satisfying

Summary: One-dimensional and immature, but interesting (somewhat)
Review: The characters in this novel are pure good or pure evil...like real life. Uh, yeah. Rosamond's infatuation with Tempest is understandable..he's charming, gorgeous, wealthy. Probably Tempest is what holds the frail story together. Rosamond's incessant whining and worrying is irritating. Ignatious' unadulterated support of this perfect angel is dubious. Here's what I think...Rosamond should have chosen Tempest. At least she wouldn't have a dull life...

Summary: Melodramatic, But Still Worth Reading
Review: The title of this book clearly states the plot: an 18-year-old young woman (Rosamond Vivian) is stalked for several years by her 35-year-old ex-lover (Phillip Tempest). The story begins on a tiny island in an unknown region (England, possibly), travels halfway through Europe--from Italy to France, to name a few places--, then comes full-circle back to England(?) for the dramatic ending (which was a little disappointing, I thought). On more than one occasion, I found myself snickering at how cheesy the book was, but for an "old classic", it was pretty entertaining and shocking, especially with the type of conflict not usually seen in Alcott's work, such as bigamy, divorce, and murder--all committed by Phillip with the help of his evil servant (Baptiste), including the murder of Phillip's own son, Lito.

The book was written in August and September of 1866 and mirrored a lot of the places Alcott saw while visiting Europe in 1865. Unfortunately, "A Long Fatal Love Chase" was not published until over a century later, rejected for being "too long and too sensational"--which, in truth, it is. The editor, Kent Bicknell, took the chore of deciphering Alcott's messy handwriting and finished the book for print in the late 1990s, leaving as much of the original story intact. Overall, it turned out pretty well. I would highly recommend this book to Louisa May Alcott fans or fans of historical, romantic fiction.

Summary: LOVE CHASE - FOR JUVENILE MINDS
Review: This book by Louisa Alcott is beautifully written, but with a rather trite, banal and simple-minded plot. It, to me, was almost like a fairy tale, with stereotyped characters - the evil prince-charming and the beautiful princess swept off her feet. Unfortunately, I felt the character development was for juvenile minds - and the tale, also. I found it very difficult to maintain interest in the book due to it's simplicity. Comparing this book to, say, Thomas Hardy's JUDE, THE OBSCURE, one can clearly see that Hardy's book is filled with deep, penetrating philosophy and psychological development of characters, while THE CHASE, is very juvenile and not sophisticated enough to hold one's adult attention. On the whole, I would recommend reading something else. Try Hardy!
