Rating: Summary: It =is= a love story Review: I loved the book, even though I'm not always comfortable with such detailed lust scenes. There's always a small part of my imagination that's going "Do people really do that, and why would they want to?" I thought the love story was very well developed in Michael's enchantment with Anne and her concern for his pleasure and welfare. They cared about each other--for more than just great sex. I'm looking forward to Gabriel's story, and I hope Anne and Michael are in it as secondary characters. All three of them deserve to have "happily ever after" endings.
Rating: Summary: Pleased with the results Review: I was pleased with Ms. Schone's work in The Lover. Her male hero was dark, compelling, and mysterious. The heroine, however, could have used some work. I also was unable to establish Gabriel's tie in with the insane uncle and whether or not he actually cared for Micheal or if it all was a game. Other than these three things, the book was enjoyable and the love scenes indescribable!! On a last note, the book could have ended better instead of just stopping and the two characters driving away. Nothing was resolved other than that.
Rating: Summary: Hot...Very Hot Review: This is not your average sweet little romance. This is erotic and hot, without going over the line..barely. "The Lover" has a lot of sex scenes (I won't say love, because no love is involved.) Held together with a very little bit of plot. I liked the characters though. There was a lot of internal dialogue & musing about what to do next.My main gripe with the book is that there was a suspenseful element & a mystery throughout the book which was not explained at all. I could not care about the huge problem the hero supposedly had because no information was really given until the very last ending part. We only knew he & anybody coming into contact with him, was in terrible danger; and that people in his past had died because of him. I think knowing more exactly what the problem was would have made him a more symphathetic character. The spinster lady was the most fleshed out character. I was willing to set aside the obvious shortcomings of a single lady asking her attorney to find her a prostitute. That was a bit on the bizarre side. She was a lot on the pathetic side. The hero was most everything one could expect in the circumstances he found himself in. If you like a steamy hot novel with little action and lots of bedroom time-think Thea Devine, or Susan Johnston, then this book is for you. I enjoyed it.
Rating: Summary: New Genre Review: This is an absolutely terrific book! My only problem with this author is that I can't get enough of her. With so many romance writers turning to suspense, erotic women's fiction is blazing it's own trail! And this one's great! I love the dark edge, it gives the duo heros vulnerability and takes them right out of the cardboard perfect mold. The complex plot is neatly woven throughout and keeps you guessing from page one. And THANK you, Robin Schone for the heroine's normal (but to her endless) imperfections. I also adore how little Michael sees in them. Taking her out of the Barbie doll mold makes us instantly sympatico. And the heat in this incredibly sexy book will curl your hair! Now I can't wait to read Gabriel's story. Great book! More please!
Rating: Summary: The Lover by Robin Schone Review: This was my first book by Ms. Schone and I rushed out to get The Lady's Tutor. Both of these books are excellent. The Lover produced sensual as well as very sexual with love and romance set in an era that most of us romance readers enjoy. This book set us up with the happenings of the time period, clothing etc., as well as medical treatment of women which we take for granted today. The books also conveys what alot of us want most, sexual orgasm with skill as well as reverance. I look forward to many more books by Ms. Schone.
Rating: Summary: Not what I'd hoped Review: After devouring The Lady's Tutor in one sitting, I just couldn't find a way to care enough about The Lover: Not its characters, their relationship, nor the cause of Michael's dire rumblings about his past. I was so exasperated that I didn't finish the book. Sure the sex is hot, but that's not enough to sustain a book. Go to any porn shop bookshelf for proof of that. I, too, tire of the man as sexual teacher and the virgin heroine. At least The Lady's Tutor didn't resort to the latter. The Romance genre desperately needs some new ideas, some writers who will push the envelope. The Lady's Tutor was a book that did that; The Lover did not.
Rating: Summary: A great way to heat up a cold night Review: Robin Schone is a damn fine writer. I really enjoyed The Lover; I thought the idea of the heroine hiring the hero to teach her the secrets of passion was original. It's certainly not the kind of theme usually tackled in romance. Both this book and The Lady's Tutor were really well-written. Schone knows how to pull off the difficult trick of writing both hot sex and characters you really care about. Often romances which set out to be erotic miss the mark as far as creating sympathetic characters. But Schone hits the bullseye, and I'm looking forward to her next book with anticipation.
Rating: Summary: Not for the romantic at heart Review: I was first introduce to Ms Schone by her short story in Captivated and was interested in her work. This is my second foray into her style of writing and while it was interesting, I would not call it romantic. Erotic horror (or mild porn) is more like it. I found the storyline was extremely confusing at times with all the dark undertones. As well, trying to figure out who the Man was gave me a headache. I am not sure if I will read anymore of her work.
Rating: Summary: Recommend Review: I found The Lover to be one of the best books I've ever read. It drew me in and the plot kept me turning the pages. Robin Schone gave us a story of love and redemption, and I intend to purchase more of her books.
Rating: Summary: story of hope Review: ... I agree that the tone of this book is dark and can be distressing and that nothing is completely resolved by the end of the book. However, that is how life is. We never know how the next chapter will turn out. This was my first experience with one of Ms Schone's books. However, it will not be the last. I read this book twice within 7-days and thoroughly enjoyed the it both times. In fact I think I liked the book better the second time. This one will be a keeper in my library. I found this book's message to be one of hope. I hope that Ms. Schone has something in the work's for Gabriel and will let us know if the relationship between Michael and Anne continues to survive after the next 23 days of their contract.
