Rating: Summary: Beyond the Erotic--- Review: Once in a blue moon, there will come a book whose tormented, tortured hero reaches out and wrings my heart; the ability to haunt me long after the covers had been shut and the books on my keeper shelf and Michael des Anges (The Lover) is no exception. He pretty much hung my heart out to dry and haunted my thoughts. By the time I'd gotten half-way through the book, I was ready to go out and slay dragons for Michael, *that* was how angry I was over what had happened in his past to bring him to this point in his life. Yes, The Lover is erotic, very much so. But it also has a soul, because underneath the eroticism is the story of a man whose struggle to regain some semblance of normalcy in the face of all the inhuman crimes that have been perpetrated against him was enough to rip the emotion from me. At times, I physically hurt for him. So, thank you Ms. Schone, for doing the erotic and the angst so well, and I hope that in the future we can look forward to Gabriel's story, also.
Rating: Summary: Not what I'd hoped. Review: This is not MY LADY'S TUTOR. It doesn't have nearly the polish or stylishness I adored about MLT. It doesn't have much of anything, and I found the tale of what Michael endured as a child gross.
Rating: Summary: 9 1/2 Weeks Meets Silence of the Lambs Review: This book was a fairly drastic departure from Awaken My Love, Lady's Tutor, and A Lady's Pleasure. In my opinion, the departure was not a positive one. First of all, the story itself is difficult to follow. Schone often sprinkles cryptic statements throughout her books, but this one was downright loaded with them. I literally developed a headache after about the first hundred pages, as I had to read very slowly in order for most of the cryptic statements to make even a modicum of sense. Secondly, I began reading Schone because she's the best at writing erotic romance. There was nothing romantic about this book. It was horror, pure and simple. The antagonist in this book could give Hannibal the Cannibal a run for his money any day. Another problem I had with this book is that it leaves you feeling as though nothing has been resolved between the hero and the heroine. It just sort of ended - hard to explain - guess you have to read it to understand what I mean! Regardless, Schone is a very talented writer. I think if you enjoy horror novels and books that give you a dark feeling throughout, you'll definitely like this one. I was expecting and wanting something different.
Rating: Summary: Very absorbing. Review: I just finished this book and loved it! I previously read THE LADY'S TUTOR by Schone and it was also very good. I confess I have not read a lot of erotic romance because before I picked up a Robin Schone book, they all disappointed me. This book is very well-written and has a story to go along with the 'erotic romance'. Good stuff!
Rating: Summary: Dull! dull! dull! Review: The story line in the lover is like a negligee, wispy andbarely there. The dialogue is entirely centered on intimate activity, and it's almost as though the characters do not exist above the waist. The Lover is a derivative of The Lady's Tutor and A Lady's Pleasure, with nothing really new or different added to it. Worse yet, The Lover drove home the point that Susan Johnson is one of the few writers who can open a novel with a sexy scene and then capture and hold the reader's interest throughout. Why is this so? Susan Johnson actually dares to provide a substantial story. It's been three days since I've had this book; I'm barely half-way through and can't find a good reason to finish -- apart from the fact I spent my money unwisely. END
Rating: Summary: WOW! Review: I absolutely loved this book! The hero was so vulnerable he makes you want to weep! And Anne! She was so strong yet so afraid to love for fear of rejection. I wish Ms. Schone could write a little faster because one book a year isn't enough! I know that she has a short story in an Anthology coming up in October with one of the main characters from "The Lady's Tutor", which is my absolute favorite book! I can also sense a sequel with "The Lover". Gabriel is so mysterious there has to be more to his story, and I hope Ms. Schone will consider a sequel for him. GO BUY THIS BOOK. If you like erotic love scenes with sexy dialogue, ADD THIS TO YOUR COLLECTION. You won't be sorry.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Erotic Romance Review: This book is an extremely well layered romance that draws you into a web of intrigue page by page. Those familiar with Ms. Schone's prior works, AWAKEN, MY LOVE , THE LADY'S TUTOR and A LADY'S PLEASURE (included in the CAPTIVATED anthology) do not need me to tell them of the HEAT that this author writes with. The pages burn your fingers this book is so hot, like all of her works. But the love scenes are so well written, as is the rest of the book. Anne's fear and desire both are palpable living emotions that you as the reader feel right along with her as she embarks on this mission to enter in to an arrangement with the scarred and burned Michel she pays for one month of "service". She is unaware, as are you the reader, of the game of a larger scope to which she has entered into involving the mysterious aspects from Michel's past. And Gabriel, Michael's mysterious friend is an extremely interesting character who just begs to have his own book. I know I have my fingers crossed Ms. Schone is writing it now.
Rating: Summary: The Lover Review: Once again i was astounded by the talent of this new author. Robin Schone has a gift! "The Lover" was a wonderful book!. Anne Aimes, our herione, is a 36 year old spinster. She was born late to her parents and by the time was a young adult, her parents were elderly and in need of care. She sacrificed her life to look after them. Now, both parents has died, and she is looking at the wide open future that is hers. Only problem is that in Victorian times, the respectable options have no appeal for her. She could marry, in which case, she would be under someones control. Or she could stay a virgin spinster. The one man she was attracted too, a man she met when she was a debutante, is now attainable to her. As an heiress she now can afford his "services". Anne chooses to buy a lover rather than die an old spinster or marry and lose control. Michel des anges, or Michael of the Angels, is as tortured a hero as you will ever find. As a young runaway, he and his friend Gabriel became male prostitures to survive. He made his fortune as the most sought after lover. Gabriel later opened a brothel catering to the ton. Michael on the other hand thru some mysterious accident is burned and scarred. After losing his last patroness, a women he loved, Michael retreats, taking the fortune he has amassed and becomes an estate owner. Now, left with those scars, he has been shunned, left with the feeling that no woman would want him. He trys to retreat from public life. However, someone is out to destroy him and those he loves. The mysterious "man" will not leave him alone. Knowing that this mysterious man will try to destroy any type of life he has, Michael decides to bait the man, by accepting Anne Aimes offer. What follows is astoundly passionate and horrific at the same time. Anne Aimes, through her courage to take charge of her life, is awakened to her passionate nature and realizes that "beauty" is in everyone. Without spoiling the story for future readers, I will warn those who are thinking about buying this book, it is not for the faint of heart. As in previous books, Ms. Schone work is as erotic as anyone can be and she is not beyond taking the reader thru some of our characters most horrific fears. If you are expecting a sweet, kind story this book is not for you. If i were to have one complaint about this book, it would be that Ms. Schone took to much to bed with the characters. I felt that too much of the "conflict" spilled over into the love scenes, and i didn't feel that the characters totally let go of their "monsters" so to speak, as did with her previous books. However, all in all, "The Lover" was a great read! And i can't wait for her next book! Go Robin Schone!
Rating: Summary: She Does It Again.... Review: Once again, Ms. Schone has ascended to the heights of erotic romance, and has brought her readers along on the journey. She creates compelling characters, with almost tangible needs and emotions. She mixes historical accuracy with great fictional talent, creating vivid dynamic characters in Anne and Michel. This book is not only a must-read, but also a definite keeper and a classic for the new field of erotic romance. However, for those searching for a light romance or merely beginning to explore the genre of romance, I would recommend you begin with a book more romantic and less sensual. Ms. Schone is a master of blatent, erotic love scenes, not for the weak-hearted (or weak-kneed, for that matter!)
Rating: Summary: Do promoters read these things? Review: First of all, this book is not in a romance genre. It is erotic horror thriller and people who have mislabeled it should be hurt because it will cause a lot of unhappy reviews. But on to the story. If you have read "The Lady's Tutor", you will find that this book is sexier, darker and much more explicit. The characters are strange (and Ms. Schones' writing style contributes to the impression). I delighted in both Michael and Gabriel and I believe that this book is begging for a sequel... But I am not going to tell you why because it will spoil some serious plot twists. :) Ms. Schone, please, oh please, tell me you are going to write a sequel!
