Summary: Caravans
Review: This was an exciting story about Afghanistan after World War 2. The first half of the story has the action with the groups of people who wreck havoc called "Mullahs." The second half deals with the characters coinciding and bringing their own actions to each other, while trying to survive. I recommend this book to everyone looking for an adventure story to read. If you Indiana Jones, you will love this book.

Summary: Another Plum
Review: Unlike many of his novels we started in this Century. The plight of the story was a young rich heiress that leaves her Philidelphia home to marry a Afghan man with Turban driving a red caddy. As most she comes to learn her lesson but in the meantime a very good story evolves giving fine insight to Afganistan. Michener would take three years a least for a novel. He would research by living where the story takes place. Then a year of writing with another year of rewriting. That must be the menu to getting it right. I have never read a bad one. I highly recommend this novel.

Summary: Caravans, what a life!
Review: Whew! What an adventure! I first read Caravans about 15 years ago! It was a most exciting reading then and I never ever thought I'd be back for a second read. What with all the most recent world happenings - Afghanistan is the foremost subject at present. Where is this place in our world and why would anyone want to know about this "no man's land"? Well, since 9/11 everyone!! I felt like I was riding with the American Rep. and his cohort across the plains. I could feel the hot sun and the unforgiving wind. I was enthralled with the archaeological descriptions of ages past and could actually get a mental picture as if there. The red rocks, the sand, the gypsum pits, the cold desert nights. I enjoyed the history of the German bridges on the way from Kandahar to Kabul and the genius of the Afghan peoples in figuring a way to keep the roads from washing out. The descriptions of various cultural activities and traditions were most enlightening. Seems as tho some are still intact. The colorful descriptions of the CARAVANS was illuminating to say the least and right in the mountains where the bombing is blasting and where the large Buddah statues (were) standing. I consider this one of the most outstanding, and astonishing, and awesome books I have ever read. I love historical fiction and this one gets 5 stars from me. PS. I teach world geography and cultures! What an education!!!!!!!
