Rating: Summary: A beautifully written novel!!! Review: Grimsley has a new female fan in the Tri-State Area. "Dream Boy" is one of those books that when you're finished reading, you regret that it's over. The tender, fresh, joyful, and neverending love between Nathan & Roy is visualized for the reader in simple phrases and words. "I hear nothing but you." This book ISN'T for gays only. Anyone who loves to read WILL enjoy this book. I personally think that this book would be a TERRIFIC book for Oprah to read. If we all send a letter to Ms. O maybe she'll read it.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful story told with great artistry. Review: The tragedy of Grimsley's "Dream Boy" is that many readers will avoid it for its subject matter. In doing so, they will miss writing of startling clarity, detail, and artistry. Regardless of story, the writing--exposition and dialogue--is entrancing. A playwright, Grimsley has an excellent ear for dialogue, a sense of words and their arrangement that subtly shows dialect. More than that, his writing easily places the reader at the heart of the story; Grimsley's familiarity with his characters, and his empathy with them, become the reader's. The book's story is powerful and, for some, difficult. If for no other reason, read the book for its words--the writing cannot help but win your interest and refresh your spirit.
Rating: Summary: A DEFINITE CLASSIC Review: If you tempt to dismiss this tale as a "homosexual" book after reading about its subject, then you're sadly missing a lot. This is not at all about homosexuality. I dig love stories of all kinds and so far, this is the most beautiful and passionate one of them all. Also powerful. The tale of love and repression will haunt for so long as it still haunts me for 2 years now. I wish Oprah Winfrey would recommend this book for her book club. Not one word is wasted at all. A definite classic.
Rating: Summary: STUNNING & HYPNOTIC Review: Easily one of my favorite fiction titles of all time. A gorgeous tale of two boys falling in love despite the vicissitudes of the rural culture that surrounds them. Nathen's family is utterly poor & soaked in its own devastating secrets. Roy, the next door neighbor boy, is Nathen's only source of protection and refuge in the midst of a domestic nightmare. The author gracefully spins out their deep passion for each other onto a canvas of repression and fear. But soon an alchemy begins. When we step away from these pages, we believe in something we'd never known possible before. The shocking resolution produces a passionate fusion of the real and ethereal, bringing to aching life, and making us utterly believe in the healing possibilities of love. DREAM BOY is part love story, part ghost story, part family story & wholly unique. Guaranteed - you've never read anything like this and it's most likely no other writer in the entire history writes like Jim Grimsley.
Rating: Summary: An ethereal tale that lures you into an haunting world. Review: This is quite possibly one of the best books that I have ever had the pleasure of reading. The language is straight-forward, yet at the same time it is seductive. The author not only takes you into the world of an ill-fated homosexual relationship between two adolescents in the South, he makes you then live that experience. One of the most intriguing things about this book is its timelessness. The story never dates itself, and that makes the story even more eerie - the fact that this could have happened twenty years ago, or that it could happen twenty years in the future. Another facet of this book that makes it so enticing is the character development. The lead character is very well developed, and as a reader, I never was left with the feeling that some of the charcter's actions were unjustified or out of line- even the minor characters are extremely plausible. I would recommend this book to anyone. The mood is dark and ominous- in fact, you may often feel like you are on a train racing down the tracks towards another train. The story lures you along until the catastrophic end, and then haunts you a bit more. It will certainly affect those who a soft-hearted, and I believe that even stoic individuals will be touched by this poignant tale. A must have book!
Rating: Summary: Sorrowfully & Hauntingly Beautiful... a Modern Tragedy Review: Never before has a novel affected me with so much power as "Dream Boy." It's by far one of the best novels ever written on the groundbreaking subject of adolescent love between two teenage boys. The ending left me desolate, inconsolable, with tears standing in my eyes. A truly masterful work of fiction
Rating: Summary: Haunting, beautiful, heartbreaking Review: A touching and moving tale. I felt so much for Nathan and for Roy, and the love they have for each other in such climate of hope and fear. If not for the triumphant ending, I would've died a little death myself. Experience it
Rating: Summary: a beautiful love story Review: It's been two years since I first picked up this book, and it still manages to affect me even when I picked it up now and again to re-read it. It is the first and only (so far) which comes to mind when friends asked me what's my favorite book. Nathan and Roy's story of courtship and love haunts me and makes me care about what happens to them. This is a beautiful, lyrical story which I will encourage everyone to experience
Rating: Summary: THe most haunting book I've ever readI Review: I wept openly while reading this book, the first time I've ever had such an experience reading a novel. This is a haunting story, that will stay with your long after you've read it. The prose is beautiful, the images like something from a dream. The relationship between the two young men will simultaneously lift your soul and break your heart. I read it in one sitting, unable to postpone learning the fate of these boys. Don't pass this one up
Rating: Summary: A bittersweet rush of emotion. Review: This is a novel that is absolutely worth reading. Beautiful story telling and seamlessly crafted prose are woven deep into the tapestry of Dream Boy. Never have a read a story that I felt such desperation to find out the fate of the title character.
