Rating: Summary: Great and touching! Review: Not only is this book interesting because it is based on a true story of Cliff Stoll, but it also has a strong content about computer espionage. Cliff's opinion about computer hackering is nothing but very right. Whereas some people only treat hackering as a creative thing, Cliff saw beyond them all that it is actually invading your privacy and destroying the trust that built the network community. Cliff's sense of humor is also great and made the book very compelling. Two thumbs up for Cliff.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book Review: I was not required to read this, but the title grabbed me when I saw it in the library. This is an excellent book, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in computers--especially novice system managers and people whose computers have been attacked by crackers. (the correct word for the people most people refer to as 'hackers') Look at your local library to see if they have it, though. If you aren't a very technical person, it might not interest you.
Rating: Summary: Exciting - Every page better then the last. Review: I read the book over the course of one week during the summer. I found myself not being able to put it down or get anything else done for that matter. Cliff Stoll's description of the prey trying to outwit the preditor was fascinating. Some computer terms are used and if you don't know anything about them you might find yourself lost in the technospeak. Great Job Cliff!!!
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: A very well-written book. It is interesting to see how the hacker was tracked and caught. A little computer knowledge is helpful (especially Unix) to fully understand some things. Anyone who enjoys a good book should curl up with this one.
Rating: Summary: must read for any one interested in I.T Review: This book was recommended on my course reading list, usually the list goes in the bin, but the title caught my attention . It is certainly an interesting and more importantly fundamentaly important read. Although a bit dated the issues havnt changed and somehow I feel the security holes are still there in different forms. Excellent and funny stuff , the inculsion of Martha brought the book down to earth .
Rating: Summary: How do you steal the world? Review: This book surprised me, in that it was an absolute page-turner! I didn't think that computer espionage could be so exciting, but Cliff Stoll does a great job of bringing the virtual community that is under attack to life. In addition, he makes the technical details accessible to all, even the most neophyte of eggheads. A must-read.
Rating: Summary: An Absolute "Must-Read" for All interested in Computers Review: I read this book for my Information Networks and Networking class. Our instructor wanted to see how complex the cyber community is and how easy it is for someone to trapaise through the networks to explore databases and websites of others. And how easy it is to destroy the trust that is expected from everyone participating in that community. Cliff Stoll shows the potential danger of hackers. He also points out the advantages and disadvantages of not securing your systems. We are open books when we decide to participate on the Web, our privacy and safety are challenged.I found "The Cuckoo's Egg" to be a quick read and very informative. Since I am not a technical person, I found the language that Cliff Stoll used, to demystify the realm of computers, very easy to follow. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a good spy/ mystery/ thriller and loves computers.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic hacker-tracking story, unlike recent ones. Review: I read this book in 1991, I think, and again that year, and then again that year. It was gripping, three times over. It's not just a thriller, but a fantastic personal tale from an objective and intelligent person. Stoll has wit and warmness and the ability to tell us all why this was so important -- long before we knew much of the Internet. And unlike a book I've recently read about tracking a hacker (Take-down, by Tsutomu Shimomura), Stoll treats his "enemy" like a human and refers to him as such. And Stoll didn't write the book for the money -- he just had a nice tale and wanted to tell it. He also wrote me back when I wrote to him as an impressionable kid - he's a class act.
Rating: Summary: Other recommendations Review: Great book! The 1-hour PBS special, starring Cliff hisself, is also not to be missed. Done with a lot of tongue-and-cheek cloak 'n' dagger, it's a scream! May I also suggest Take-down by Tsutomu Shimomura?
Rating: Summary: A most enticing mystery.... Review: The author tells an amazing story of crime in our day and age, of one that he himself lived, and finally came to solve, all while trying to live a normal life; not that you could call his life normal. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a mystery. Enticing and fun to read. 5 stars.
