Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: The best Manga out--perhaps the best comic out Review: Not only do we get beautiful art with this book, but a terrific story. Today, most manga seems to deal with sci-fi futuristic robots and technologically advanced cultures. What makes Blade so different is that it takes place in feudal Japan, and is much more fantasy than science fiction. It's truly a great series, and a great read. My only complaint is Rin's seeming incompetence in combat.

The main character, Manji, is the dark, brooding, foul-mouthed hero with a sense of style all uniquely his own. He doesn't try to be someone else, doesn't make excuses for his behavior, and accepts what people are deep down inside. His 'revenge tutelage' to the young, inexperienced Rin makes for a striking contrast and an interesting combination. The two together accurately represent the Yin/Yang philosophy so prevalent in most Asian stories, but does not overindulge that theory to the point of innanness. In fact, that line between good and evil is easily blurred, as Samura teaches us so cunningly. Dark Horse does an excellent job with the translations and explanations, as well as with the mirroring of the comic (right to left for English speakers, which is a reverse of the Japanese left to right way of reading). Way to go, DH! This is one of the best samurai stories out there, and Dark Horse presents it to English-speaking audiences splendidly. Both get the highest marks of recommendation from this reader.

Review: Samura has outdone himself with the superb pencil work and the gripping pace of his storyline. It will impress you straight away and I'll be damned if you end up returning this cool masterpiece! There's tons of gore, particularly this freak show, which you have GOT to see! ^_______^
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: It's fun! Review: That's what I like about this so much more than Lone Wolf and Cub, which I find unrelentingly dour. A playful side to the oppressions of Samurai culture? BOTI manages it. Samura shines by never bogging down in too many frames to illustrate a scene, and he knows how to mix the light with the heavy. Manji's character is not as infallibly boring as LW&C's Itto - when someone's untouchable in combat, where's the suspense? LW&C has all the fun of a mandate. Grab BOTI for its humor as much as for its action, and get past the quirkiness of the first section to the actual beginning of Rin's story.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: One of the best Manga ever written and illustrated. Review: The story is quite intense and the art is nothing less than superb. Mr. Samura has done an exceptional job putting together an adult book about love, war, revenge, honor and fantasy all entwined together in an enthralling mix of characters and mystery. The action in this book is non-stop Samurai action and you will find yourself flipping through the pages as quickly as the blades cut through the wind. This book is a must-have to all Manga fans. For all non Manga fans, you must give this book a try.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A brilliant, beautiful story Review: This excellent manga features rounded characters, beautiful artwork, and a complex plot. The action scenes seem to be in motion. Each character displays many facets as an immortal swordsman, Manji, helps young Rin avenge her parents. There's plenty of gore, though the more frightening portion of the story deals with the psychology of the disturbed "bad guys." This is plot driven and fully enveloping. I've read many other manga, but this was the first that completely sucked me in. Try it, you will be enchanted.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: uncouth Review: this is a finely illustrated graphic novel with a good storyline that will be enjoyed by all who get this book. Some of the fight scenes are a little uncouth but the wonderful assortment of blades more than makes up for it
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Japanese Spaghetti Western With Punky Attitude Review: This is a fun graphic novel; done in a beautifully dusky drawing style, that lets you breath in the dust off of the centuries-old sandals of the untimely, time-warped characters. Our hero, Manji, is like an old-west Clint Eastwood character; but, drawing a sci-fi blade, instead of his revolver. His side-kick is a young girl who witnesses her parents violent deaths, at the hands of the vicious students of a rival martial arts school of thought. They then set out on their mutual journey: she to avenge her parents death, if she can; and he to close a deal with a witch, to free himself of the curse of immortality, by killing 1,000 evil men, if, (and not until), he can. Cool stuff! The only negative comments I could have is that sometimes Hiroaki Samura does extreme close-ups that I have yet to be able to figure out what is happening in the particular panel; but this doesn't happen very often. Also, the story sometimes jumps back and forth between flashbacks and present tense, without making it obvious by using a caption to tell the reader. This may be an intended storytelling device; but I had to read the book several times to get all the events straightened out. The good thing about re-reading it was that I enjoyed it more, each time.-Bryan LeedDayton, Ohio
