Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Some of the best ocean writing ever Review: This is a terrific book. The reviewers who complained about the history and the overly- descriptive prose are really just reflecting the mind-set they brought to the book, because he does both of those well. I mean, that's the book he set out to write. Also, there is not a story here - rather it is a collection of essays, like that from a journal. Approach this for what it is: a bang-on personal report about what it's like to live a surfer's life revolving around the beach, wind, swells and tides. It's extremely accurate.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: true to life Review: Surfed all my life (doing it for 20 years). First in Hawaii then in California, most recently in Santa Cruz. Picked up the book two years ago totally related to Duane's experience. He captures the reality of surfing. In my opinion only weakness is historical references which sometimes get in the way of the flow of his story. Otherwise, excellent! P.S. Those who gave poor reviews were probably expecting Gidget. "Caught Inside" is not Gidget! Its REALITY!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Classic Review: An excellent description of nature, surfing and California life in general. A real classic that once read can be refered to again and again for a break from the sometimes oppressive grind of modern life. A call to all of us to get back to nature and the good life.
Rating: ![2 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-2-0.gif) Summary: sophmoric Review: While entertaining, I found it read like a Creative Writing 101 project. He goes on and on (and on and on and on) describing the natural beauty, after a while I'd say "enough! How about the surfing?" The "poetic" parts were repetetive and frankly not all that inspiring.Don't get me wrong, being a surfer myself, I found it lovingly researched, and very interesting at parts, especially the history. Sadly, most of it reads like an article in "Surfer" or "Outside" magazine.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Duane explains what it feels like to truly be a surfer. Review: While reading Daniel Duane's book I said to myself quite frequently, "That is exactly how I feel about surfing." The author writes about the entire surfing experience, including what it feels like to get barreled, the fear of sharks, board selection, surf flicks, and so on. His writing is very descriptive -- at times may be a little bit too descriptive -- but it does paint a good picture of the environment. Overall, I was very pleased with the book.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Wake up and smell the surf! Review: Caught Inside is one of the best books I have read in a long time. It fits in there somewhere with books like Kerouac's Dharma Bums and Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer. Inspiring, exhilirating, and informative, Caught Inside makes you want to chuck all mundane responsibilities and go out and have some fun.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: "Caught inside" is the bible of surfing Review: Daniel Duane writes a remarkable book about the history, wonder, and spirt of surfing. "Caught Inside" takes you through the glory days of the old soul surfers who first charged Wiamea Bay and the so recent and tragic death if the great Mark Foo. Daniel Duane is a local of Santa Cruz, California. This is where he lives, surfs, and tells the stories of his great surf adventures along the north coast. The book tells about punk surf nazis like "Apollo" which is his own nickname for the adolesent blonde haired boy that always seems to pick a fight, and all the unknown surf spots along the coast between Santa Cruz and Montery that are hidden away by the vast fields of artachoke plants. "Caught Inside" is a book well worth reading, and I would recommend it to anyone even a nonsurfer.
