Rating: Summary: I LOVED IT!!!!!! Review: This book is unlike any other.. (Well, I am in the process of reading THE BELL JAR, so...) This book caught me in one of my depressed moods. After reading this book I underwnt the amazing process of my own self evaluation. I began to understand myself more. This book was haunting yet enjoyable! I read it almost every month! HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Rating: Summary: It was awesome ! Review: I thought this book was awesome!. I twas hard to get into but by the time I did I could not put it down. It takes a hard bite of reality to put this book together.
Rating: Summary: Humorous, Haunting, Honest Review: When I first started reading Kaysen's story, I was a bit uninterested and apprehensive because I wasn't accustomed to Kaysen's writing style. But not too far into the book, the story completely mesmerized me. It was the BEST book I have read in quite a while, and it has inspired me to explore new areas of literature that I haven't done previously. It was humourous at times, haunting at times, and honest throughout.
Rating: Summary: Very Good Review: I first read the book "The Bell Jar," and fell in love with the story. Then, while reading a magazine a year later, I found an ad for this book saying it was similar to "The Bell Jar." I went right out to my library and got the book. I found it to be very enjoyable, and the characters were wonderful. I suggest you read both of these fabulous books.
Rating: Summary: Encouraging, a reflection of me Review: The plot of this book is very similar to my experience in Juvenile Hall and my breakdown, but it goes above and beyond that for me...to finding parts of me I couldn't find and bringing them to the surface, to feeling lost in life, that feeling of bleak separateness when you're not being understood...I can't say, the internal reaction of the reader is as important to reading this as what is presented by the writer, so differentiate between shallow-reader and shallow-writing.If you've been locked up in Juvy or a mental hospital, or are depressed or borderline or hurt or confused or lost, I really think you should check this book out, and you won't forget it.
Rating: Summary: unlike anything else Review: This is a thought provoking book told from the perspective of a mental patient, not a scientist who has collected his observations on a case study and published them. it's simply written and completely irrational, which provides a compelling insight into a mind most of us can not understand. its funn at times, makes no apologies and sees things in a truly different perspective. read this book!
Rating: Summary: Autobiographical Review: This book is about the author's experience in a mental institution. It is light reading. I wish it would have been more in-depth. It would probably be a good book for a teenage audience.
Rating: Summary: Simple reading, not very informative Review: I didn't like this book very much. I thought it was kind of shallow reading. I would not recommend it if you are seeking knowledge or an understanding of bipolar. For me, it appeared similiar to some of the adolescent books my sons have.
Rating: Summary: I was amased that I was not the only one who is "insane". Review: I have had a simular expierience to Susanna Kaysen. I have been hospitalized twice since the beginning of 1998. I read this book after my first hospitalization, and found a lot of simularities in our thinking. I was amased by the way she was able to explain what it is like to think in an "insane" world. I have a personalty disorder, but my Dr. has not told me wich one. This book gave me hope that no matter what I have and no matter where I end up I can get better and enter back into the world of "sanity".
Rating: Summary: Very honest, brutally at times Review: As a 17 year old who is bipolar type 2 and has been in a psych ward, this book was very real to me. Painfully so at times. I think that everything in life is relative and sanity is no exception to the rule. One thing I did wish was that the author told more about how she was managing these days. All in all, it was an excellent book. I would reccomend it to anyone who is bipolar or is striving to gain empathy for those who are.
