Summary: A Must Read!!!!!!!!!
Review: Is was my first Tom Clancy novel that sparked my interest in his other novels. It's about a defecting Russian Submerine captain named Marco Ramius who is in command of the newest and most threatening Russian "boomer", the Red October. I found this book to have great detail and a extraordinary plot. One Clancy's greatest acheivements in this book is his phenomanal character development. He gets you into the mind of Cpt.Ramius and CIA agent, Jack Ryan whose goal is to prevent the U.S. from attacking and sinking the defecting Red October. I cannot rave enough about this book, which I think is a must read for any mature and thoughtful reader who can appreciate Mr. CLancy's great and well thought out novel. Tom CLancy really did his homework on this one.

Summary: The Hunt for Red October
Review: This book was set over the Pacific Ocean in the 1980's, Tom Clancys novel The Hunt for Red October is about a war that is in the process of happening. The story involves Russians and Americans who loathed each other back then. The main character of this story is Ryan who has a wife and two kids. He has this theory about the one of the captains that works for the Russians, is going to become a traitor to the country of Russia. The captains name is Marcos Ramius. He is a very respected man in Russia but he finds out that this new submarine that the Russians built is going to be used to destroy part of the American's western cost. So he becomes a traitor and lies to his crew about what his mission was. Ryan is a brave man who is willing to risk everything to go on his prediction that Ramius is going to become a traitor. This book is mainly about if the Pentagon and White House should believe Ryan and not destroy the submarine and try to take it over, or if they should just destroy it and not risk many people dying. The reason everyone is so worried about the submarine is because it has the capability to go to what they call a caterpillar mode and sneak past all the patrols that are guarding the American coast and then it can destroy much of America. The whole time in this book the Americans are lying to the Russians and the Russians are lying to the Americans and it is very reptetitive so it gets kind of boring after a while. I actually would not recommend this book unless you like to read about meetings and talks and discussions that these people have during the book. The book is better than the movie because the movie leaves some things, but other than that they are about the same. At the end of the book or at least near the end, they board the submarine and try to get to the American coast. Another Russian submarine is trying to stop them. The question is, will they survive after all this work or will they end up perishing at the end?

Summary: A great thriller, though complicated
Review: Tom Clancy's novel, Hunt For Red October is exciting enough, though confusing. With the Russian terms and names used, it is hard to remember who is who. Though overall the excitement beats the confusion, I would not recomend it to young readers. It takes you from Moscow to Washington to the middle of the North Atlantic.

Summary: good, but a little boring
Review: Okay. I've seen the movie w/ Sean Connery, and IMO, it's better than the book. The book seems to be far too detailed for me. Maybe this is why I percieved it as boring. Prehaps I should have, but I didn't finish the book. In one week, I had put it down so much I was only on page 117. (And I read GONE WITH THE WIND in 5 days) So, if you have naval experience or just like this kind of thing, go for it! But if not, just rent the movie.

Summary: The Hunt Has Ended (For a good book at least!)
Review: Greetings fellow Clancy fan. If you haven't read this book yet, your missing out on a real treat. This book is fantastic. It's intriguing charecters and incredible plot make it a must for and Clancy (or any military writer) fan. I was wildly entertained by this book and I learned alot from it. In my opinion, it is probably one of Clancy's best. By combining his knowledge of the military with a supurb writing style, Clancy has clearly demonstrated how a good book should be written.

Of course, our hero is Jack Ryan, no surprise to any Clancy veteran. A brash CIA agent who is the only one capable to out fox Marco Ramius, the brillian Russian Captain who manages to defy practically the entire world.

Of course, I cant give away any details- those are for you to read- but the climax of the book as the two countries engage in the deadly game of cat and mouse is fantastic and crazy, with a huge monkey wrench thrown right in the middle that even I didn't see coming.

Hope that keeps you all in enough suspense. Go! Go buy the book and read it! It is great! Probably Clancy's Best! Indeed the hunt for a good book is over!

Summary: The Hunt for a good book was found!~~ZS3
Review: This book was amazing! Tom Clancy's research is exhilarating and in depth. I really enjoyed his works. Never did I know how much action was taking place in the ocean and how it is monitored until I read this book. Recently I haven't read many books, but this book has inspired me to continue to read, not only more of Tom Clancy's novels, but an array of books. These type of novels I find really interesting; it shows how a person of poor means can grow up 2 become a national hero and patriot of a nation. This book I would suggest to anyone to read. It has a great story, climax, and conclusion. People of all types can enjoy ths book, so I hope everyone out there decides to read The Hunt For The Red October.

Summary: Hunt for Red October
Review: I just could not put this book down. I would recommend this book to anyone, even to someone who would not choose a book with a military story line. Tom kept the suspense, and mystery at a high level throughout the book. The suspense was further heightened because I got the feeling that the story could easily happen in real life. The reader is given a glimpse into the high stakes world of international politics and intrigue as the governments, and intelligence agencies of Russia, England, and the United States jockey for advantage. The Russians are trying to find the "Red October" and destroy her, while at the same time they are trying to get the United States to help them. The United States is trying to figure out if Captain Ramius is a madman wanting to start World War III, or if he is trying to escape his life in the Soviet Union. The British, who have helped to uncover some of the secrets of the new submarine, do not want to be left out of the picture. The main characters were given in-depth background stories. The background helped me to understand what each of the characters were thinking, and their motives for their line of thinking. I found myself rooting for Captain Ramius and his crew, not just because the United States could possibly capture a new Russian submarine, rather because I wanted them to escape to the freedom of the west. I also found myself rooting for the American characters because they demonstrated patriotism, innovation, and the willingness to take a chance on a total stranger. The hardest parts of the story to keep track of were the references to all of the governmental and intelligence agencies. There was the director of this agency, and the deputy director of operations of that agency. The agencies, and their people were described to the reader in detail when they were introduced. Future references to these agencies and people, were made by the use of initials throughout the rest of the book. It got to the point that I was looking for a glossary to keep track of all of them. But this was a minor irritation and I did not let it distract me from the story. Even though I have seen the movie a couple of times, I found the book to offer more suspense because of the details that are provided to the reader, that the person who sees the movie is never made aware of. Such as the politicians and spies, who are not in the immediate line of fire, but whose lives are on the line pending the outcome of the story. The movie does not even touch this part of the story, but the reader is aware of the dilemma of these people, and the reader does not know who lives and who dies until the very end. The ending of the story is better in the book version by far, and that is all I am going to say.

Summary: The Hunt For Red October
Review: The Hunt for Red October By Tom Clancy

Tom Clancy has written many excellent books in his time, but I consider this as one of his best. I feel that it is a wonderful read. The story is mainly set around the submarine "Red October." The story is that a prototype Russian Nuclear submarine sets sail. But the captain and the crew decide that they want to defect to the side of the Americans. What follows is a gripping story of how Red October tries to get across the Atlantic to America. In which they are forced to battle many Russian submarines. But the Americans have already realised that Red October is going to defect and are racing to reach it before the Russians can.

I felt that this story was a brilliant read as Tom Clancy goes into a lot of detail about what the Submarine is like and I feel that he has taken a lot of time to research what the object that he is writing about is called in real life and in the proper military term. I feel he also has taken a long time to think about some of the characters he has had to introduce, such as the captain of Red October, he has had to think about his background in the military, and he has had to make this background sound realistic.

All in all I think that this book is a brilliant read and I strongly advise anyone to read it because it is superb.
