Summary: Very poor
Review: I can't recommend this book. It's mainly filler, with few details and little narrative text. There are many pages of anonymous testimonials, a ton of pharmaceutical and supplement descriptions that are totally unsuitable for the layman (and read like the result of a quick search on Medline) and much other anecdotal material. You could hardly call this a 'program'.

He could of at least included some references to the source of some of his findings but he doesn't even do this! His study of 1000 people is touted but never explained. It turns out to have been conducted without using a scientific method (e.g. double blind, control groups etc) and he admits this himself. Finally, what does this guy have a PhD in?

Don't waste your time getting this book.

Summary: The Ultimate Aging Program by Gary Null PhD
Review: Dr. Null's writing is excellent in this book which teaches
some of the better protocols in the alternative medicinal
area. He begins the book by teaching patients to develop
and enforce a food journal to diarize their eating habits.
Next, he asks that you make a general assessment of the body
by looking in the mirror and critiquing noticeable aspects.
Graduates of the Null program have reported higher energy
levels and better health. The author espouses a number of
aging theories in the arsenal of alternative medicine:
- eliminate free radicals
- reduce the rate of blood flow
- regulate the thymus gland to improve T-cell counts
- manage the elasticity of lung tissue

Dr. Null cites some important protocols for classic disease
processes. i.e.
- anti-Parkinson's disease food groups are asparagus, spinach
and soy
- alpha lipoic acid boosts the power of anti-oxidants and
benefits diabetics
- anti-arrythmic foods are lettuce, asparagus, cucumber, radish,
endives and oats
- anti-arthritic foods are cantaloupe, avocado, cucumber and
evening primrose
- anti-aging foods are carrots, barley, papaya, cabbage, sweet
potato and spinach

He reminds us that we can extend life through diet, exercise
and phytochemicals. The work is an outstanding addition to
any health library in conventional or alternative medicine.

Summary: SOME SOUND ADVICE, BUT PRESENTED IN A MISH-MASH MANNER
Review: To the book's credit, the advice given is sound, even if not new or Earth shaking. It does go into great lengths about eliminating the junk food and toxic elements from your body, i.e., too much sugar, fried foods, meat (animal protein,) but haven't we heard all that before? One does not need to buy a book to hear the message, it has been drilled into us in virtually every newspaper, health brochure, and health-centred television program for years now.

To the book's discredit, was the rather disorganized presentation style. I found myself constantly flipping back and forth from one page to another and enduring footnotes, which distract me to no end. My preference is to have information presented in a clear and concise manner, in an well-organized, structural format and that certainly was not found here.

If you gather some new information here that helps you improve your quality of health, then for you, the book will likely be a success. However, I found anything presented here which claims to promote "anti-aging," is nothing more than sound, common sense advice, which may help maintain your quality of health but is definitely not going to prevent aging. If one is concerned about "aging gracefully," it is common sense to eliminate as many junk foods as possible and eat nutritionally balanced meals, but I would place far more emphasis on a positive mental outlook to combat aging, than worrying about the dozen French Fries I ate for lunch last week! Vegetables and fruit are sprayed with herbicides and pesticides, in meat we worry about Hoof and Mouth disease and Mad Cow disease, we have all heard of cases of contaminated drinking water, grains have been genetically modified, sugars, salt and preservatives are supposedly harmful...so what is "safe" to eat? One can eat "sensibly" till the end of time...nothing is going to prevent aging. We would need to join Peter Pan in Never-Never Land, find Shangri-la or the Eternal Fountain of Youth for that one. One book I do hightly recommend is "Eat Right 4 Your Blood Type" - that one is a great book definitely deserving of a five star rating.

Summary: PHD? Scientist?
Review: I rushed to purchase MR. Null's book after seeing him tonight of PBS. That was before I read all of the negative reviews posted here! I noticed one reviewer had suggested that a visit to quackwatch.com might be helpful. I went there and was not pleased with the information I discovered. I suggest you do the same before purchasing this book!

I decided to purchase Dr. Timothy Smith's book instead (a reviewer had recommended it). I appreciate the fact that readers are allowed to post their reviews and thanks to those reviewers who stopped me from making a bad purchase.

Perhaps PBS should take some of the money it receives from the Pledge Drive and use it to investigate it's guest.

Summary: Changed My Life
Review: I recently became interested in eating better and taking care of myself. Reading this book showed me just how important it is to take the time to make health a top priority. Before reading this book I thought that I was healthy because I am free from any diagnosed disease. Now I realize that I may not be as healthy as I thought because of all the "junk" I am putting into my body- such as fried foods, refined sugars, too much animal protein, etc. This book was incredibly motivational to me and made me want to make the changes Dr. Null spoke about.

Summary: I Love Gary Null, but...
Review: Gary Null is a very intelligent man. His radio program is fantastic, and he is a walking encyclopedia of information. I am amazed at how much information he has on such a variety of topics from nutrition, to politics, to even sports.

With that said, let's get to the review.. I too purchased this book after seeing his show on PBS. I had already known Gary, and had heard him talk on his radio program for years before the PBS special. I had decided to purchase the book at the local book store upon seeing the special because it was so convincing.

I got home, and dove right into the book. I was greatly disappointed at how disorganized this book is, as I am with a lot of Gary's books. He seems to big a HUGE fan of footnotes, and posting results from various trials and protocols from peer review journals. There is very little information in this book that actually teaches you how to Anti-Age.

Upon completion of the book, and getting nothing out of it, I thought I might have read it wrong, so I read it again. To my dismay, I was incorrect. This book is certainly not a wealth of information by any means, and you can get more out of listening to Gary's radio program for 10 minutes than you can get from reading this book from cover to cover.

Summary: Don't waste your time & money.
Review: Like many of the reviewers, I bought this book after seeing Null on PBS and had really high hopes for it. It is horribly written, disorganized, contradictory and he never really lays out the "program". The actual program section is 8 whole pages long and doesn't go into nearly enough specifics.

A cornerstone of the program is to drink lots of vegatable juice, but he doesn't specify what vegatables. In the program section he says to cook with olive oil and yet three pages later in the detoxification section he says to only cook using macadamia nut oil. His vitamin/mineral/herb recommendation tables are bizarre and difficult to understand, with each table in a different format.

At the back of the book he lists a "general sampling" of the peer review journal articles. Would someone teach Gary how to properly footnote and write a bibliography. Assuming for a second that all the citing he does is actually correct, having a proper footnote would strengthen his claims greatly.

Way too much of this book is spent in listing testimonials, both supposed users of the program as well as Gary himself. He sure likes to write about himself and how healthy he is. By the way, just what marathon did he win a gold medal in, "Mom & Pop Null's Backyard Barbeque and Marathon"?

Summary: Changing my purchase to "Renewal: The Anti-Aging Revolution"
Review: I viewed Gary's promotion on PBS 08/20/00 and was extremely excited about ordering his book but I wanted to learn a little bit more about it before making an investment in it. I was really disappointed but thankful when I read the many reviews on this book. I find it hard to believe that so many dissatisfied customers could be wrong so I have decided not to purchase Gary's book. Fortunately, in reading the reviews I was able to find someone who recommended another book with similar contents and I will be purchasing it instead. Granted, I haven't read it but it seems to have much more potential (each reviewer has given it 5 stars.) Dr. Timothy J. Smith is "a practicing physician with more than 25 years of experience in a broad range of disciplines, including alternative, nutritional, and Chinese medicine." For those who are interested, the book is called "Renewal: The Anti-Aging Revolution - The Breakthrough Program" by Timothy J. Smith. Good luck with either book!!

Summary: Null's book is a waste of time and money!
Review: Null's book is a complete waste of time and money. Instead of fulfilling the promise of the title with the "Ultimate Anti-Aging Program", Null simply regurgitates old vegetarian homilies. Null waste the entire first half of the book by telling us that he has developed a program, that everyone ages, but that his program will help you defeat the clock. He then fills nearly 80 pages with testimonials.

The second half of the book is supposed to give us the Program. It does nothing of the sort. Null fills page after page with the tired rhetoric of low fat, low sugar, low meat, low salt, low caffeine, and low dairy. When he discusses the specifics of vitamins and supplements, it's done in a form that renders the discussion useless. Null cites studies from various journals, then prints in bold type the particular supplement whose use the study is to have supported. The problem here is that for each supplement Null cites so many studies with so many different dose recommendations that the poor consumer's head is spinning. Under the B-Complex vitamins, Null cites over 30 studies and over a dozen different dose levels for B1 alone. These range from 10 mg/day as supported by a study about the Irish elderly with thiamin deficiency, to 200 mg/day he culled from a study about patients with chronic liver disease. He continues this foolishness for 80 pages!

The bottom line: Don't waste your time or your money with this book. Null simply assembles a warmed over collection of cliches that you've all read before. I only regret that I bought the book at an airport and, therefore, cannot return it until I fly through Detroit again.
