Rating: Summary: im here to set the record straight Review: As a very experienced reader of fantasy I have to put my 2 cents in. Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion but it grates on me to see such golden ratings on this book. People who say this book is one of the best ever written are very mistaken. I don't know what they have been reading to judge this as a great book but something very poor indeed. I also noticed that the ones who say so are very young. I keep on seeing 'rated by a 11 or 12 year old'. Yes the grammer is bad, even the ones who say the book is wonderful agree with this. There is just so many errors that it takes away from the book. It becomes distracting, trying to figure out what the {hay} he's trying to say. As far as the story goes, it's a good idea but just written very poorly. Although the idea of the sword remind me of a twist to Soul Caliber, a game on the Dreamcast. Anyway, the idea of the sword and its properties are the only good thing about this book. I forced myself to read the entire thing, hoping that it would get better but it did not. As for the author making such realistic 'grey' characters, I find that point laughable. The author made it way too obvious trying to make them grey(having the 'good guy' fighting for evil and the 'bad guy' fighting for good). If you truely want to see grey characters read Margaret Weis's 'Star of Guardians' series. Overall I agree with another person here who stated that this book is a scam. I find it very hard to believe that people really think this is a great book.
Rating: Summary: The Best Book EVER !, I am hooked Review: C.M. Whitlock's The Price of Immortality is setting the pace in fantasy! He does what no author has done before. He gives us a world of good evil and the gray in between. None will regret reading it! He weaves a web of intrigue and suspense in this world of magic and mayhem. The characters of this story have been magnificently conceived, growing into real people as you read, people who you will both love and love to hate. I've read many fantasy books but this one has held my interest the most. The plot is so intellectually intricate it keeps you reading until the final chapter. The characters are also very developed which makes reading about their hardships and triumphs even more exhilarating! If I had to compare him to anyone I would say that he is a cross between Robert Jordan and Ann Rice with a little Steve King thrown in. Definitely my favorite of all time, and it will make your best seller list too! Five stars all the way.
Rating: Summary: The Price of Immortality is high. . . Review: I am one of the people who bought "The Price of Immortality" based on all the references to it that crept into reviews of other books that I have read. In one sense, C. M. Whitlock, at least in the annals of Amazon, has achieved the same notoriety as Robert Jordan - I must admit that I am bemused by the extreme variation in the reviews of "The Price of Immortality". I'm going to come down mostly in the middle. While the book overall was not one for the ages, I did find it an enjoyable and thought-provoking story. Philosophically, it brought to light the choices all of us must make in a world that is usually gray. Important choices are always like that. Other than what to have for lunch, there are rarely clear-cut absolutes that we can always bank on. Though not to the extent of Drake's choices, we all are forced to make, and have made, choices that are distasteful to us in some way, but are the right ones in the circumstances. The title of the book was a clue - we must expect the price of immortality to be a high one and its attendant choices hard ones. At first I was disappointed with the ending and thought it a touch weak and a set-up for a sequel. Perhaps it is, but I prefer to give Mr. Whitlock the benefit of the doubt. I feel that the ending was instead a statement that there are not always clear endings, as there are not always clear choices. Did ultimate good triumph over ultimate evil? Not really. Once again, the conclusion is firmly gray. Finally, though an I somewhat agree with a previous reviewer that the story is far more important than the grammar and editing, this book was almost uncomfortable to read in spots. Since the advent of spell-checkers replacing proofreaders, proper spellings that are grammatically incorrect abound in literature. But this book had far too many cases of punctuation errors; sentences bizarrely run together, incorrect capitalization, and other errors too numerous to mention. But what bothered me the most were the logical fallacies that crept into the book. Early in the book, it was written that Drake and Mista spent several days in the forest after the attack by the hooligans from the fair. Yet, on the very next page the story picked up the very next day. Granted, a strong story will overcome the errors, but the errors are not necessary. One more day of editing could have caught and corrected all of them. All in all, this was a good story and I would like to read more from C. M. Whitlock when and if it becomes available.
Rating: Summary: Utter Tripe and Drivel Review: If on a VERY boring day, you happen to walk by and see this book -- RUN, POKE YOUR EYES OUT, SET YOUR HAIR ON FIRE. It doesn't really matter which of these you do (or all of them) but under any circumstances DO NOT READ THIS BOOK!!! Nononononono! DO NOT!
Good God! By the time I got to page 10, (gnashing teeth and groaning due to the HORRIBLE editing and grammar)my brain had had enough, my eyes were refusing to see, and my teeth were of a mind to turn around in my mouth and start eating my head from the inside out.
Rating: Summary: Doesn't even deserve 1 star Review: The general idea of this book is good. Having said that I will say that this is ONE TERRIBLE BOOK!!! I don't think an editor looked at this book, I've never seen so many errors (and I don't go looking for them.) I really don't want to get into specifics of how bad this book is, but it is simply one of the worst things I've ever read. To anyone who has given this book a good review, "what were you smokin'?" DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. DO NOT GIVE THIS BOOK TO SOMEONE YOU DON'T LIKE. DO NOT GIVE THIS "AUTHOR" AN EXCUSE TO WRITE AGAIN!
Rating: Summary: You Read Books for the entertainment value not Grammer! Review: This book by far was one of the best books I have ever read. I read some of the reviews on this page, and well frankly I am disgusted by some of the stuff people have wrote. They complain about grammar and spelling! 1st off if you do not have a PHD in grammar you should not talk about the way a book was written, or any spelling mistakes. From experience of other books I have read, spelling and grammar is a common mistake. Most likely it is not from the author's mistakes but from the publisher's when they re-write the whole book so it can be published. As for the review from the guy that said he never heard of CM Whitlock until he bought the book. To him I have one thing to say! What part of first edition do you NOT understand? If it weren't for people trying to make a book and bring wonderful stories to the every day person to escape in, we would have never heard of people like Steven King, and other great authors. You read books for the entertainment value not grammar mistakes. I am sure CM Whitlock had proofed read his book many times before he sent it to be published. What this all comes down to is, CM Whitlock is a very talented author, and his stories can capture the mind. I can't wait for the next book to come out from this author, because I will defiantly get it. As for the grammar errors, all I can say is that I hope he gets a better publishing company next time. But even then since I read stories for the entertainment value and not grammar, it won't matter to me! I highly recommend this book to anybody that wants to get away to a distant land and time. This is one of the best books I have ever read to this day!
Rating: Summary: Never should have been published Review: Trust me, the bad reviews above are correct - this book never should have been printed. If it at least had been edited, and the grammatical mistakes fixed, it may have been entertaining enough for a 12 year old, but even then, I have my doubts. Do not buy this book unless you're an English teacher and want a good example of bad grammar and editing.
