Rating: Summary: The Dark Companion Potential Unlimited Review: Having read a broad mix of books (483 to be exact) over 10 years and rated them on a scale of 1-5 (5 Being the best) I've placed The Dark Companion in the 5 category for a variety of reasons. It is a thriller/science fiction by content, but really much more. Mr. Smith's writing style is higly readable, but at a level that clearly reflects a belief that the audience has some degree of intellegence. The setting descriptions and the insights that are woven into the story clearly add substance and credibility to the unfolding events. Mr. Smith seems to have utilized a great deal of his personal experience to insure the reader can appreciate a real world setting, in spite of the science fiction aspect of the tale. Finally, the integration of the historical events that the Dark Companion reflects upon through out the book, adds a unique demension to this book. Many historical novels consider events like a photograph, Mr. Smith's Dark Companion adds the ability to see events like a painter who interprets the scene. The style and ability of Mr. Smith to wrap the story around many of the events we deal with or hear about every day, suggests that the Dark Companion will surface again, with a new identify. I'd welcome another visit. Anne Rice, you have competition.
