Review: Having read 'The Need' which is a wonderful book by Andrew Neiderman, I eagerly picked up 'Surrogate Child' in the belief that it, too, would be a worthwhile read. I am sorry to say that it is one of the worst books that I have ever read. The characters are one dimensional and not believable. The plot, while somewhat interesting, never reaches its potential. Poorly written, with a ridiculous ending, the book is not worthy of Mr. Neiderman.

Summary: TIRESOME TRIPE
Review: SURROGATE CHILD unfolds with the suicide death of young Solomon Stern. His grieving parents in an effort to add more meaning to their lives take in a foster child named Jonathan. And lo and behold, seems like this new youngster is uncannily like their dearly departed Solomon.
Joe and Martha Stern, the parents, are annoying from start to finish. He's a typical macho man, unwilling to admit his failure in relationship with his dead son; she's a whiny, overly pushy mother, whose love for Solomon is questionably incestuous. Of course, Jonathan comes in, wins over Solomon's girlfriend, friends and everyone but Joe.
There's hardly any real suspense or chills in this book and Neiderman pads it with redundant speeches, and a ridiculous anticlimactic ending.
I have thoroughly enjoyed some of Neiderman's other books, but this is one I do not recommend.

Summary: Can we say spooky?
Review: This is a really really really good book. As I was reading it, I thought "Oh gee, just another mom-beats-child-and-child-kills-mom type of books," but it wasn't. It turned out to be very well written, edited, published and just an all around great book. It sent chills running up-and-down by spine just thinking about having a person of that nature in my house, living with me. Ahhhhhhh! Just pick up the book and read it. It won't take that long because it is a rather short book. I read it in less than 3 days and was amazed at the character devlopment. Don't expect a vast array of characters, only 3 or 4. But after you read the book you almost start relating those characters to people you know in real life. It was spooky to me. Very good book!
