Rating: Summary: Intense--an interesting portrayal of a descent into madness Review: "Hopler's Statement" is an interesting book that goes into the mind of a murderer. In this case, the murderer is just an ordinary guy, so the book shows how just an ordinary person can be driven to murder. "Hopler's Statement" depicts the dark side of the seemingly perfect suburban life of John Hopler. The book is a fascinating portrayal of Hopler's growing obsession, jealousy, and frustration. At times, the reader is left wondering if certain events in the book actually happened or if Hopler has gone so insane he just thinks they happened. I highly recommend this book!
Rating: Summary: Corporate Angst and Striving Ambition Review: Defining the angst and envious ambition of the mid-eighties, Hopler's Statement still presents truths about the midset of central New Jersey corporate suburban enclaves and their denizens. The book is a brilliant depictation of the microcosm world of planned, gated communities similar to the upscale Hills in Bedminster, and provides insight into the life, both corporate and residential, of the local, semi-elite workforce. It's an extended metaphor for its time and a remarkable study of a portion of Americana that has yet to pass into oblivion.
