Rating: Summary: Suspense, fantasies, and thrills Review: "Thunderland" is a novel of suspense and many thrills. Although it comes off as a cross between "Drop Dead Fred" and "Nightmare on Elm Street", it bears its own flare of originality. Jason, a recluse child as a result of neglect from his parents, finds solace in a `best friend' to fill the void in his personal life. This friendship marks the beginning of the 'beginning'. His father is a workaholic and his mother is an alcoholic. Linda, his mother, finally swears off alcohol after her last course action nearly causes the lost of her son's life. This is when all of the trouble really begins. This novel swarms with the possibility of the impossible and threatens the obsession of fantasies. Beyond the mystical aspects, the novel also focuses on family values and the need for love and true success and survival. If you like suspense overshadowed by horror, this is the book for you.
Rating: Summary: Childhood Fears Review: Brandon Massey's Thunderland is like opening a great, unexpected gift on Christmas morning. It's fun, thrilling and very, very entertaining. This book marks the debut of a bright new voice in horror fiction, one you will without a doubt hear from again in the near future. Jason is a haunted by a horrible recurring nightmare. Then, he sees a message someone has left for him on the bathroom mirror: "Remember". And as if that wasn't enough, strange things began happening all around him and someone is stalking him. Who is doing these things, and why? With his friends Shorty and Brains, Jason will have to try and piece the puzzle back together in order to get the answers he seeks, all the while trying ot deal with his parents' failing marriage and relationship. This is the bare-bone version of the book. I've tried to keep the description simple and brief because giving too much of the plot would be ruining and very surprising and truly enjoyable read. Let's just say that the book also includes a paranormal man, an otherworldly dimension and a lot of mayhem. This is truly a horror novel. Massey throws plot twist after plot twist our way, all the while maintaining a near perfect pacing and tone. Some iffy dialog aside, and a there is very little to dislike about Thunderland. The ending is solid, the characters dinstinct and realistic and most of the scares are nail-biting good. This is the kind of book I love. It centers around kids faced with a greater-than-life situation, it has a great villain and enough imagination to fill three or four more books. Give this one a try. I guarantee you won't be disappointed. And mark Brandon Massey's name somewhere in full view, because he'll surely become a major voice in horror fiction.
Rating: Summary: Promising Debut! Review: I have never read a book with so much imagination, thrill, and suspense as Thunderland. I was captivated from the first page to the last page. I will be recommending this book for years. Thunderland deals with multiple topics, such as, the supernatural world, child neglect and abuse, and relationships with family and friends. The development of the main character, Jason Brooks, is excellent. The readers see Jason transformed from a frightened child to an assertive teenager. Jason is confronted with a life or death situation. But, he makes the right decision. I look forward to reading more books by Brandon Massey.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic, hard to put down Review: I loved this book! I cannot remember the last time I read a book without hardly taking a break. Brandon Massey's writing style is rare these days, a writer who cares about the reader and not his own ego. This spooky story is about thirteen year old Jason Brooks who conjures up a special playmate to help him deal with his disfunctional family. The author seamlessly goes from child to adult scences while maintaining the correct "voice" and keeping the action going. I read the first two hundred pages before I knew it. I'd recommend this book to anyone.
Rating: Summary: Nice First Attempt Review: I met Brandon a few months back and read his book... well much of it at any rate. For a first novel I found it to be okay but not stellar. I say this because I think a balance view of folks who didn't like his book as much will only give him insights on how he can broaden his audience. I am not a sci-fiction connoiseur and as such I think that I had a hard time getting into the story, his message, the details... etc. I did find Brandon a interesting person and that gave me an insight to the book that broaden my perspective a little. I unfortunately don't relish the notion of re-reading Thunderland but I will look forward to reading his next book. I think if he wants to broaden his audience and snap up a few more advid readers - he may want to consider looking at some of the sci-fi folks who have been successful in drawing non-scifi buff in like Octavia Butler whose work I love. All the Best to Brandon Massey in his pursuits nonetheless - I believe he has the making of a significant author in this genre.
Rating: Summary: Extremely Enjoyable Read! Review: If you haven't read anything by Brandon Massey, you're missing a treat. His books are addictive - I want MORE!
This is a well-written, SCARY tale that is impossible to put down! As soon as I finished it, I read "Dark Corner," the other excellent novel by Mr. Massey. It's also a wonderful read.
Rating: Summary: do not read this book at night... Review: the story is so well developed you feel as if you are in the book. This is indeed a horror book and it reads like an X-files episode. If you love mystery with a supernatural twist then this is THE book for you.
Rating: Summary: wow, wow, wow Review: This is a great horror novel. One of the best I have read in a while. It has all the ingredients needed to keep your heart beating just a little faster and keeping you turning the pages long past your bedtime.
The only complaint or criticism I have is the unlikely style of thinking and talking Mr. Massey has given to his young cast of characters. We are talking about 13 & 14 year old boys. Mr. Massey has them speaking with wisdom and speech patterns well beyond their years, which ends up sounding phony and silly. That is one of the things I enjoyed so much about THE FACE by Dean Koontz. His young character talked and thought the way a young boy would. Mr. Massey could learn a trick or two from Mr. Koontz's style. Does this take away from the greatness of the book? Not at all. This is a must read for anyone who likes to be scared. Buy this book, curl up on the couch with a nice cup of hot chocolate and prepare to start looking around you and jumping at every single noise, and if you notice your watch has stopped, welcome to Thunderland.
Rating: Summary: An Excellent Twisted Thriller Review: Thunderland is a thrilling, twisted mystery with horrific ingredients that will make your hands tremble, your breath catch, and your heart hammer. As your mind races to keep pace with this magnetizing tale, you'll feel transformed into the terrifying pages of Thunderland. A maniacal, sadistic creature has escaped from the sinister confines of the place where our nightmares occur. This evil essence taunts and horrifies the 12-year-old protagonist of the novel, Jason Brooks, threatening to devour all traces of the young boy's sanity. With vivid words that elicit visual depictions of horror, and an edginess comparable to the most established horror/mystery authors, Brandon Massey paints a mystery of diabolical and calculating battles with a wicked, menacing entity that stalks Jason, his family, and his friends. Brandon seduces us with mischievous metaphors, graphic details, and a toxic storyline that will keep you magnetized until the last page. Open Thunderland and enter the wrenched minds of these poignant characters maddened by grief, terror, and a seemingly unstoppable demented source of evilness. CAUTION: Read Thunderland with the lights on, doors & windows locked, and with someone in the room with you!!!!
Rating: Summary: Enjoyed My Journey Into Thunderland! Review: Thunderland was a book that I had heard of a few times and it was even mentioned in another book I read as a "book-to-read" so I decided to go to Brandon Massey's website and read a few pages of his book, online, before I finally decided to go ahead and order it. Well, I got the book and, once I started reading it, I found that I could NOT put this book down. I loved how the "hero", Jason, was a teenager and I also loved how the "supporting cast" were his two friends, Shorty and Brains, who were also his age. This was a very well told novel of suspense that readers of the suspense/horror genre are sure to enjoy. It's not a long book so it shouldn't take more than a few hours to go in the world of Thunderland but I'm sure, once you're there, you'll be in for a journey you won't soon forget!
