Rating: 4 stars
Summary: bold and perverse
Review: This story is actually a grueling joy, so to speak. The critic above seems unable to appreciate Tessier and his darkness. It's not a perfect novel, not even as outstanding as his earlier works. But it works! This author will take you where hardly any other will. And I seem to sense what may be the writer's personal philosophical conflicts as he wrangles with moral dilemmas. I took time off from Thomas Ligotti (a very different kind of storyteller) to get lost in something -- and this one was a ride. Tessier's main talent is the novel as opposed to the short story. Any fan should read SECRET STRANGERS. In a way, evil does win out, if you take it that Heidi is a basically unlikeable character. I agree that the end is dissapointing, but only if you're hoping Tessier will make it unlike the typical horror novel hero wrap-up. What he does he does well enough, but he may know what I mean when I say, You should have really gone for it! You were almost there (I won't give the ending away)...
