Summary: Intriguing beginning - a 80's horror series
Review: I heard about this book, the first in a series of six, in the Horror 100 Best Books (Stephen Jones and Kim Newman) in which you can find a list of what the essayists consider as being the most significant horror novels of all times. To tell the truth, I had imagined something else entirely. I thought it would be the adventures of some powerful hero battling against forces of evil, a van Helsing or even a kind of Blade. There is a little of that but on a more naturalistic level. The main character is a researcher in psychic phenomenas and a most ordinary family man. Alas, it seems that he has brought involuntarily some work home. His wife is raped under his eyes and his children kidnapped by what appears to be satanists. Those are accompanied by invisible beings who try to kill him. The hero discovers some powers of his own which permit him to survive the attack. I wouldn't say that it is a page-turner but it is interesting enough, with some kind of a New Age background, which I don't like most of the time but here, it's O.K. It doesn't look too idiotic even if I don't believe in these things. Faulcon (real name : Robert Holdstock) has written a good enough first part which makes me look forward to reading the sequels and see if the hero will be able to find his family and destroy the diabolical forces sent against him.

Review: I heard about this book, the first in a series of six, in the Horror 100 best books in which you can find a list of what the collaborators consider the most significant horror novels of all times. I can not say that I was deceived although I had imagined something else entirely because of the title. I thought it would be the adventures of some powerful hero against forces of evil, a van Helsing or even a kind of Blade. It is a little of that but on a more naturalistic level. The hero, who is a researcher in psychic phenomenas, is otherwise a most ordinary man. But it seems that he has made the mistake of bringing work home when his wife is raped and his children kidnapped by what appears to be satanists. The later are accompanied by invisible beings who tries later to kill him. The hero discovers that he has some powers of his own or he wouldn't have survived. I wouldn't say that it is a page-turner but it is interesting enough, with kind of a New Age background. Most of the time, I hate New Age stories as the authors of this kind don't seem to be able to write intelligent intrigues. Here, it's different, Faulcon (real name : Robert Holdstock) has written a good enough first part that gives me the need to read the sequels and see if the hero will find his family and survives the diabolical forces sent against him.

Summary: Wow! Truly amazing start to a great series....
Review: My brother first read book 5 back in the '80's and told me of this. Then I decided last year to find and purchase the first book. It took sometime because they are all out of stock and print, but with some patience, I was able to purchase all six.

I admit, it was really tough to digest this book, and at times were a little too slow and not enough kick in it. But the way it was written, the suspense and horror of watching what was done to his family, what he had to go through and his determination, well, something clicked in me! This is something out of a Graham Masterton world! People, do NOT give up hope after this book (as I almost did)! It only gets better and better. I just finished book 4, and have book 5 and 6 on the way!

This is the only horror book/series Robert Holdstock (Robert Faulcon) has ever done and by far is one of the best reads I have ever encountered. It has to do with a lot of mind boggling wars but WEEEELLLL worth it when you hit book two.

Review: This book starts off with a bang and never lets up. Dan Brady with the help of Ellen Bancroft, goes on a chilling search for his stolen family, and finds people who can send creatures to stalk, watch and kill you with the power of their mind. These people are Arachne. Terrifying people with no concious, only a desire to finish their mission to their own evil ends. But in what way is his family to be used, and why did they leave him for dead? He will find his answers and make them all pay for the pain they have inflicted on his family!!!
