Summary: Harlan by David Whitman
Review: This is the best book I've read so far in 2004. Harlan is a story about an angery, introverted, intelligent, creative teenager who does not fit into any of the cliques at his high school. He comes from a broken home and his alcoholic father was extremely abusive. Harlan has decided to end his life. This book deals with "coming of age," young love, a serial murder mystery, bullying, child abuse, etc. Whitman wrote the story of Harlan in a diary form. To read Harlan gives you the sense of peeking into one's secret diary where only a young teen can express his fears, insecurities, his thoughts, and his latent desires. The author David Whitman was able to draw upon his own experiences when he wrote Harlan. If you felt like you never fit in during high school and you were bullied, ridiculed by teachers or students because you were different, then you will identify with Harlan. Whitman is a writer that should not be missed. Try and locate a copy of Harlan. You will be glad you did.
