Rating: Summary: Great! Review: An excellent thriller! You'll zip through this book in a day.
Rating: Summary: The Fast And The Furious Review: Andrew Harper (aka horror master Douglas Clegg) presents us with a twisted tale that is so fast-paced and so entertaining that you won't be able to put the book down until the very end. It's one of those books that grabs you by the throat from its very first page and never lets go of you until your're done.A mental instition worker will be faced with his worst nightmare when a female patient escapes, only to come after him and his family. The patient is dellusional and thinks that they were lovers in a past life, a love she will do anything to regain. The books is very short and the chapters are two are three pages long at the very most. The action moves from one place to the next with an incredible amount of speed, so fast that the reader is never given the chance to get tired. This isn't an amazing book, nor is it one that you'll remember forever. But it is still a very fun ride while it lasts.
Rating: Summary: WHOO, the steely eyes of Agnes... Review: Bad Karma is a good book under the psuedonym of Andrew Harper. The most horrifying scenes involve obscure and scandalous flashbacks of the past lives of S&M Agnes, psycho-at-large. These scenes are truly scary, truly. Trey, psychiatrist treating Agnes becomes prey to her murder game as she escapes a mental ward and follows Doc to his vacation spot. Let it be known that I just finished Bentley Little's The Ignored right before I poked around Bad Karma, thus through a fiendishly evil pair of eyes I roved the grey-lit passages of (real author) D Clegg's mindwarping mayhem. Agnes is not your friend.
Rating: Summary: Could have been worse, should have been better Review: Bad Karma is ultimately a novel that works better in concept and packaging than actual presentation. The problem here is that such a cliched story could only work with truly believable characterizations and dialogue - and this is where Harper doesn't (or can't) quite deliver. What we get are character types, not individuals, and the entire story suffers as a result. Yes, Agnes is truly a menacing psychopath, and the sometimes violent imagery of her crimes can be unsettling... but it all winds up diffusing itself when you read a few lines of dialogue and think "kids don't talk like that" or "why doesn't he/she just...?" In other words, Harper hacks a bit too much for the medium to become truly transparent, which is the only way a novel like this could truly succeed. Comparing this to Thomas Harris is not entirely accurate, as Harris is much more adept at that level of technical transparency, whereas Harper comes off as just a bit too average. It is a short book, meaning you can read it in a day or two, and it is mildly diverting, but be warned: It is neither thrilling nor engrossing, which, for a novel about a rampant psychopath terrorizing a vacationing family, is perhaps the most unsettling crime of all.
Rating: Summary: A chilling tale of obsession and revenge Review: Bad Karma, by Andrew Harper, is a chilling tale of obsession and revenge. Trey Campbell, a psychiatrist at the Darden State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, is enjoying a long overdue vacation with his family on Catalina Island, off the California coast. Meanwhile, the most dangerous inmate at Darden State, Agnes Hatcher, escapes. Nicknamed "the Surgeon" and "the Gorgon," Agnes can sense what motivates people, and she enjoys performing "surgery" on her victims. In her twisted sense of reality, Agnes feels that Trey has deserted her, and now that she's free, she'll stop at nothing to teach Trey a lesson. Bad Karma is a fast-paced psychological thriller reminiscent of James Patterson's novels. The tiny chapters and nailbiting suspense keep the reader turning the pages. Andrew Harper is the pseudonym of horror writer Douglas Clegg, and he doesn't miss a beat in changing genres to straight thrillers. This book is quite graphic and definitely not for the squeamish, but if you're in the mood for nonstop suspense and psychological terror, give Bad Karma a try.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down! Review: Clegg wrote an out of the park homerun when he wrote his book.I read over half of the book in one sitting, it's that good. Honestly, make sure you have the time to spend with this book, you won't want to put it down either. As our story opens, Trey Campbell is on a vacation. He works at Darden State Hospital. One woman (Agnes Hatcher) who is a "guest" at Darden feels that Trey is her one true love, and wants to be with him. Even if it means that she will kill his family and anyone who gets in her way. She does escapes (and does a horrible thing to a nurse) and begins her quest. I can't give away to much, but trust me, this book is fantastic. The climax is a real page turner. I last sentence of the book really hit home for me. I wish I could tell you more, but I dont' want to ruin this wonderful novel. If you buy this book (and you should) I promise you two things. 1) You will have a hard time putting it down and 2) Before you go to bed, you will want to check your windows and doors to make sure they'er locked.
Rating: Summary: Agnes...what a lovely young lady Review: i read this in 1 sitting.extremely well done.great character descriptions, quite tense,a very scary story
Rating: Summary: A Brutal Thriller Review: if you liked Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon, you're going to really love BAD KARMA by Andrew Harper. This book kept me up reading until it was nearly morning and this is tough to do since I have no problem putting most books down. The author Andrew Harper wastes no words or time getting the action going and upping the suspense at every turn. BAD KARMA is one of the freshest and truly terrifying thrillers I've read in years and Agnes Hatcher is one of the best murderesses I've ever found in literature. See what you think. I really enjoyed this book. Ellie Lassiter
Rating: Summary: Great beginning, Okay ending Review: This book is a strange mix. The scenes in the beginning in the hospital are quite chilling and original. However, the ending was very predictable and felt quite rushed. With obvious inspiration from The Silence of the Lambs, there really isn't anything new here. It's a fun, quick read, but if you want a truly chilling and intelligent read, check out thriller writer Kevin O'Brien. His work has much more research behind it and more believable on all accounts. I'm perplexed why people are giving this 5 stars... If you think this is a perfect book, you need to read more.
