Rating: Summary: A suspenseful tale of conflict and destiny Review: Gatekeeper by Trilby Plants is an enthralling fantasy novel. Kerrick Malone is a successful writer who becomes involved in a deadly, netherworldly struggle. Horrific entities from beyond the common realm slaughter his wife, and threaten to pour through portals from other worlds to wreak havoc - unless Kerrick learns to harness the magic within himself, and defeat a terrible villain from beyond. A suspenseful tale of conflict and destiny, Gatekeeper establishes author Trilby Plants as a gifted storyteller and will leave the readers looking eagerly toward her next effort in the genre.
Rating: Summary: It scared my pants off! Review: Let's get one thing perfectly clear: This book scared my pants off. Plants has crafted a mesmerizing and fast moving yarn about long-legged beasties and things that go bump in the night. Worse, she subtly suggests that the story she's telling you just might be true. You won't sleep with the light off for weeks. At its heart, this is a story about magic, both the dark menace that threatens us every day and the magic we find in our hearts when we work together. Bit by bit, we see Kerrick and his partner Arden learning that only if they combine their insight and their magic do they stand a chance against the forces allied against them. The author shows us, rather than tells us, that this relationship is blossoming and shows a commitment to character development refreshing in fantasy/thriller writing. Plus, it's just a pretty cool story. Early on, we only catch glimpses of the rather nasty creatures that ultimately kill Kerrick's wife. The mystery draws you in and never lets go. The reader wants to know what is going on just as much as the characters. Once the truth is discovered, there is still an exhilarating final confrontation with the fate of the world in the balance. I couldn't put it down. The alternative world Plants reveals is a magical place and fully imagined. The evil creatures will terrify you. But the good guys' magic will assure you that all is truly right with the world. After all, we get to read this book, don't we?
Rating: Summary: A Reader Review: The book starts with a bang and maintains a fast pace which I enjoy. I tend to read batches of related books (history, military, adventure, political, etc) and only read DUNES a year ago. Gatekeeper was every bit as good and is set in our world and time. If you enjoy subject matter similar to DUNES you will enjoy Gatekeeper. I am waiting on the next and hoping there will be a series.
Rating: Summary: DOTTIE'S REVIEW OF A GREAT FANTASY Review: Trilby has written a fantasy that takes you through the portals to the other side. It transports you into the minds and hearts of the characters. It combines murder with mysterious and dangerous creatures that keep you turning the pages. The author blends the lives of the characters with the world of fantasy in an extremely believable manner. So sit down, put your feet up and enter the world of magic with Arden and Kerrick, an adventure that you will never forget. A well written book.
