Rating: Summary: Do Not Buy This Book Review: Richard Hatch should be prevented from going anywhere near a typewriter. This is the worst type of Mary Sue story; most Battlestar Galactica fanfiction surpasses anything Hatch has written. The plot is ridiculous -- Baltar is a good guy, the fleet is torn apart by rebellion, but Apollo with his special birthright can save everyone. The characterizations are equally ludicrous. Apollo is god and everyone else pretty much gets short-shrift. The Cassie/Apollo relationship is absurd. It also seems like Hatch saw no point to trying to aim for consistency in this series. For instance, Apollo's shock at learning Sheba loves him would be understandable if not for the fact that they were engaged earlier in the series. Ughh. Don't waste your money.
Rating: Summary: a great story Review: The editor of this book (if there was one) should be executed, but the negative reviews on here are too harsh. This is a great yarn. I'm not a big Galactica fan (Armageddon is the only other Galactica book I've read), but I really enjoyed Rebellion. The editor (if there was one) should be shot, but the story was superb. I enjoyed the setting of nul space, Baltar's role in the story, and the rebellion aspect of the novel. Armageddon is the better book, but this is a far more interesting tale. It's not Moby Dick, but it is a damn fun read. It's has plenty of passion and imagination. The editor (if there was one) must perish, but I still enjoyed this book tremendously.
Rating: Summary: not bad Review: The Galactica books switched publishing houses and errors in the books increased and negative criticisms were brutal. I agree that this one could have been improved before publishing, but I don't agree that this book doesn't still have it's merits. This one tries to deal with life and problems in the fleet. It also tries to present an adventure that takes place outside of space itself. Those two unusual elements combined with the errors have gained this one brutal criticisms which I don't think are fair. I thought this was a great read and was very surprised that many others didn't think so. Rebellion is a good story with great characters trapped inside a poorly edited book. The mistakes are a problem, but they also tried to do something different with Rebellion to make it a little unusual. It's not your typical Galactica novel and yet it stays true to the original spirit and characters of the TV program. I respect and appreciate that. Read this one for the story and characters.
Rating: Summary: the adventure continues in book 4 Review: The scewed up thing about these BATTLESTAR books is that book 3 was put out in hard back as a ROUGH DRAFT! Things got slightly better with book 4 but that hard back also had mistakes and typos in it! At this point a lot of fans gave up the ghost. BUT: They have promised to fix mistakes in the second printings so I've been hunting for the paper back versions. Book 3 in paper back is the revised and finished draft. IT ROCKS! Much much better. I admit I liked REBELLION in hard back despite the goofs but after seeing the improved RESURRECTION I'd like to see the revised paper back of book 4 too. Until then I can only rate the first printing. First printing grade: Solid B for story and characters. I can't say enough good things about the TRUE version of RESURRECTION which has been printed in paper back. I hope the same is true of REBELLION.
Rating: Summary: Battlestar Galactica 1980 was worse....But not by much! Review: This collabration was horrible. It lacked the rhythm of the other three books, the plot was poorly written and extremely hard to follow. It brought back bitter memories of Battlestar Galactica 1980, and I'm still scarred from that. The characters seem to be weak shadows of their former selves, doing things completely alien to their TV show counterparts, like Baltar turning good? I can only blame those who worked on the book Alan Rogers and Richard Hatch and urge them to improve the quality of the story and characters in order to bring those disgusted with the current turn of events back into the fold.
Rating: Summary: How not to write Review: Where do begin? Who do I call? Richard, I hope you read these reviews. The first three were great. Stick with Chris Golden. It took me over a week to read this one. I read the others in a weekend. I agree with the reader from San Fransisco in his Final Note, Richard's first three books were great. They picked up where the series left off, reffered to older stories and events, and added new ones that all tied together.I didn't like how off track the story line went from the first three. I didn't like the "soap opera" that went on and on between everyone. I'm all for a little romance, but come on, Mr.Rodgers, you can buy a book to learn to write romance novels. Pick up a Sandra Brown, you'll get the jist. I had the same problem re-reading sentences and trying to keep track of who was really speaking. I agree with Marshal L. Smith about the "he cried", "she cried" (wasn't that a movie?). The story line had promise had it been presented better. The ending-weak at best. Gee, I can't wait to see what happens to Cassie and her baby, I'm on the edge of my seat. I will buy the next one providing I don't see Alan Rodger's name on it.
