Rating: Summary: what a hoax Review: if you don't think that this being referred to as a true story is a hoax I urge you to do a search for Beaumont university.. there are none.. well except for a website claiming to be a college website but the only links that work are for the rose red story line... I have went to college search engines and there is no school I have found!! but the book is very gripping and you need to just remeber that trully there is no mansion named rose red!!!
Rating: Summary: Ripped-off! Review: Call me stupid if you want, but I bought this book thinking it was an authentic 1907 diary! I didn't bother to bring my magnifying glass with me to Waldens so I didn't see the tiny "fiction" on the back cover next to the bar code! I'm a King fan, but I am thoroughly disgusted with him and Hyperion! This is fraud! I would never have bought this book knowing it was fiction! I hope someone sues the pants off King and Hyperion! I see that some reviewers say that the book was sold in the fiction section of the bookstore.......it was in nonfiction at the store where I bought it. I returned the book...the manager had no idea what I was complaining about until I explained tha it was misrepresented as nonfiction. Last time I checked it was still displayed with nonfiction titles.
Rating: Summary: Am I the only one... Review: Who was completely taken in by the diary and after finally getting wised up - wanted it to be real so that there would be more?
Rating: Summary: Good introduction and an interesting read Review: The main purpose of this book is to enhance the television viewers’ experience while watching ROSE RED on ABC. I take this book to be a prologue for the miniseries and I hope to enjoy the program. It is irrelevant to me who ‘really’ wrote the diary since the idea of the book is to explore the mind of one of the haunted house’s owners. In 1907, Ellen a naïve, young woman marries John Rimbaud, an oil tycoon. She decides to keep a diary to explain the feelings she shares for her husband and her new life. We discover that he is a cruel man who likes having affair with other woman. He does not care for other peoples’ feelings and does whatever he wants. He wants to show how powerful he is by having the biggest and most elaborate house that will later become Rose Red. He is aware that he is desecrating an Indian burial site but he just doesn’t care. Even when weird things start happening he becomes indifferent. Only when it directly affects him is when he starts to worry. Ellen explores in her diary several things including her hidden sexuality, the dark arts, her plotting for revenge, and her rapport with the house. For reasons that are later explained in the diary, men are getting killed and women disappear in the ever-expanding house. Overall, I think the writing was good. I had a problem with some of the words used that I do not think were used during the 1910s and 1920s. I am not a lexicographer but maybe I am just mistaken. It is an interesting story told but just like in any other diary it is completely one-sided. It would have been interesting if Dr. Reardon had unearthed some addendum material to include in the book to support or deny Ellen’s writings.
Rating: Summary: Duped? Fiction? Not fiction? Who cares? Review: I am glad that I read this book before I read the reviews. For awhile I thought it was a true story, but then it seemed to be a cross between "The Exorcist", the Sara Winchester house, and "The Haunting". The story itself is chilling, not just the house, but the demise of the marriage between John and Ellen. What is a good story anyway? Do we have to be told in advance that it is true or untrue? I take it for what it was, an enjoyable read, enough that I didn't want to put it down until I finished. I don't think this was written by Stephen King because there was a tender side to it that a female could better understand and describe. Whoever wrote it did a great job and a visit to the website is every bit as interesting as the story.
Rating: Summary: Beaumont University truth revealed! Review: I will not go about saying how great this book is, other people have done that. But I will clear up the speculation on Beaumont University. I went on register.com and looked up who owned the rights to the domain name. Guess what? The domain is registered by Walt Disney, the owners of ABC! So, the book is related to ABC and Stephen King. I definitely recommend the book because I think it was written by King.
Rating: Summary: Of Course it's King. Review: Of course this is Steven King. Someone named Joyce Reardon isn't going to come up with something this big, this well done. "The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer: Rose Red" is the story of University professor Dr. Joyce Reardon, whose studies include paranormal phenomena. To prove that paranormal activity exists she assembles a team of six people. Each person possessing a particular extra-sensory skill. Rose Red, a mansion built by Seattle millionare John Rimbauer, is the focus of Dr. Reardon's test. Ellen, Rimbauer's wife, has a passion for remodeling the house. It never seems big enough for her. And she will spend her life adding strange rooms to the ever growing house. One day, Ellen disappears. It's as if the house has eaten her alive. Yet the house keeps growing. Dr. Reardon's foray into the mansion releases tormented spirits. I know this sounds like the movie "Hill House" but it's not. "The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer: Rose Red" is every bit as good as King's "The Green Mile." Mystery and suspense abound in this macabre tale of secrets and things that go bump in the night. This book should tie-in well with the TV mini-series. Cammy Diaz, lawyer.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining Prelude to the Miniseries Review: If anyone doubts the authorship of this book, I direct them to the first paragraph on page 190: "...this is not one of Poe's gory inventions of fiction: no young girl who can set schools afire; no dog that behaves as if possessed; no giant pendulum swinging to cut one in half!" I suspect the author has left other, perhaps more subtle, clues to his identity in the text; this clue jumps off the page.
Rating: Summary: My visit to Rose Red Review: I was mezmerized by this book. One of the best I have read in a long while. I am so glad Stephen King is doing a film for ABC. But, I don't know if any film could touch on the mystery and misery this woman encountered. Joyce Reardon...congratulations on a job well done...I'd like to know everything about Emily.
Rating: Summary: Nasty review Review: I am rating this book according to the opinions of friends. I intend to read it ASAP. I feel the review of "Maggie in California" was nasty and mean-spirited. Other readers don't deserve to be berated by her. I found her review not worth reading.
