Rating: Summary: Newest C. Harris series is not a dissapointment Review: I began reading Charlaine Harris when I received an autographed copy of "Real Murders" as a gift for contribution to Public TV. As a fellow Arkansan, I was glad to read such a good novel by one of our own. This latest series was quite a bit different, and surprising. Yes, some of the vampire info is borrowed, but I liked the idea of having a bit of an understanding of basic vamp behavior at the outset. The supernatural seems natural here. Ms. Harris uses great descriptive language, and I can almost see Bon Temps. Sookie goes for bad-boy Bill the Vampire, but Bill has a heart of gold - never mind that it doesn't beat.... I liked the mystery, and the spunkiness of the main character. If you have enjoyed Ms. Harris in the past, this one won't disappoint, and neither will the sequel. I can't wait to read more installments, though I know from experience I might be surprised at the endings...
Rating: Summary: Hilarious Raunchy and entertaining Review: This is the first books I have read of Charlaine's.. I LOVED IT.. It was so funny in parts.. that brought tears to my eyes.. with names like Sukie Stackhouse and Bill the Vampire.. with many usual characters that entertained from begining to end.. I read both her books straight off in two days... and which I had another to read straight away... You love the world of the unusual then this is the books for you... sometimes.. horrible sometimes sexy and humourous.. There is nother really another like out there...and gives new edge to the Paranormal books into days market place.. Thank Charlaine..
Rating: Summary: SAVE YOUR MONEY! Review: I bought this book one evening in my local superbookstore because I was looking for an interesting novel and the cover art grabbed my attention and the synopsis seemed cool. Never judge a book by its cover. This novel is awful. It takes a really, really awful book to keep me from finishing what I've started, but this one achieved that feat. The writing is shallow, the situations silly beyond description, and I find myself wondering how in the heck something this poorly rendered found itself into print. This is one novelist whose name I will vividly recall. Not so that I'll look for her work in the future, but because I will avoid her tripe at all costs. I want my money back!
Rating: Summary: Great Read! Review: I really enjoyed this book. One reviewer called the story "derivative," but then most vampire stories are. Laurell Hamilton comparisons are to be expected. However, this story has a much lighter touch. Good plot turns and surprises!
Rating: Summary: Loved this book!!!! Review: When I first checked it out Dead Until Dark at the library, for some reason, I couldn't get into it. But I gave it another chance and I'm glad I did. It has a mix of romance and suspense. Sookie Stackhouse is a great gal and Bill her vampire lover is the best. The story and characters were very interesting and it all takes place in a small town. Usually lots of vampire stories take place in big urban cities, but not Dead Until Dark. Bon Temps, Louisiana is as small as you can get. lol! I read this book in one day, and am currently rereading it. I just ordered my own copy here off of amazon, so that I can return the copy that I'm reading to the library, before I ruin it. lol! I love vampire fiction, especially contemporary/modern day ones. Read this book and you'll love it. Charlaine Harris is a wonderful writer. I can't wait till April for Living Dead in Dallas--another Sookie story. I hope Bill is in this one. :)
Rating: Summary: Nice work, but derivative Review: I'd have given this book 4 stars, but the similarity to Laurel Hamilton's work was so marked that even some of the intended "twists" were predictable long in advance because they were the same as in Hamilton's books. The book is still worth a read, though, thanks to polished prose and a good narrative voice.
Rating: Summary: A Good Book - You Won't Get Bored Review: Many will say that Ms. Harris' book is too much like the series by Laurell K. Hamilton. That's because there are many simularities and parallels existing in both series (if "Dead Until Dark" is a series.) All that aside, Ms. Harris' book is a darn good one - and in spite of the simularities - there are many differences as well (who know, maybe both authors came up with the same general idea.) I, for one, enjoyed Ms. Harris' writing style and talent - and I indeed hope that she does decide to write a series on this particular book.
Rating: Summary: An all night read and a keeper. Review: This book was great. Hope this is a start of a new series. The main characters were great and the book leaves you wanting to know more about all of them. I started reading this at night thinking I would be able to stop and go to sleep in about 30 minutes. WRONG! I stayed up all night to finish it and then went to the internet hoping to find if there was plans of a sequel. Couldn't find the answer , but I hope there will be. Harris' story was like a cross between JD Robb and LK Hamilton. A little less gory , but just as interesting and is the kind of book that grabs the reader and doesn't let them go.
Rating: Summary: Dark, sad and yet entertaining Review: I bought this book thinking it would have quite a bit of humor in it, based on other reviews. I can honestly say I didn't laugh out loud once. It is possible that the humor just didn't do it for me, but frankly I doubt it. However, it is a decent romance and a pretty good vampire story. You end up caring about most of the characters (some of them you aren't *supposed* to care about) and in spite of all the very good reasons why they shouldn't, you want the two lovers to end up together. If you want to laugh, then I wouldn't recommend this book. But if you want a good, dark vampire story with some romance thrown in, then by all means read and enjoy.
Rating: Summary: A Wonderful Modern Gothic Horror... Review: Dead Until Dawk was THE BEST vampire book I had ever read. And yes, I have read Anne Rice. The characters were well developed and layered and the story was unpredictable. Bill was the perfect bad guy/good guy and Sookie was a wonderful herione with courage and strong morals. I loved how they described vampires("...the legally recognized undead..."), giving a whole new spin on the human/vampire relationship. The only problem I could see was the quick-cut ending which could easily be resolved by oh say...a series??? C'mon Charlaine, I think yoou got something good going here.
