Rating: Summary: If you read the first version, save your money Review: I'm a King fan, and despite the fact that I'd read "The Stand" (multiple times, actually) I ran right out to get this book. In the introduction, King makes a statement that "some will view this as an act of vanity by an author who can do whatever he wishes." After reading both versions, I can honestly say this is a true statement. His editors did him a favor the first time around and this is not an improvement over the first version. If you've read the first "Stand" save your money.
Rating: Summary: A fabulous, detailed, horrifying trip! Review: I don't even like Stephen King, but this is one of my most favorite books. The first half of the book, when he's describing the spread of the plague and the death and chaos is so incredible and terrifying! I read the whole thing in one day and keep re-reading it. It gives me goosebumps every single time!
Rating: Summary: Best Stephen King Book Ever Review: This is by far King's best book ever. His words frightened me beyond belief, made me cry and laugh. But best of all, it's complete discription of all characters and surroundings, made a motion picture in my head from beginning to end. I think about this book everytime I go through an underwater tunnel! Don't let the number of pages frighten you away from this incredible epic of good vs. evil. I've read it three times! And with the uncertainty of the Middle East and biological weapons becoming a reality - this book will scare the bejesus out of you!
Rating: Summary: An Insomniacs Paradise! Review: I am an avid reader, enjoying books from the Star Trek series to 1984 by George Orwell and this is my all time favorite book. It gripped me from the first page, pulling me in and not letting me go until I had finished it. It got so bad I couldn't wait to get home from work to open it back up and I wouldn't put it down until early morning. I averaged about 3 hours of sleep several nights in a row until I had finished it. King did a great job of skipping scenes and leaving characters in situations where you wanted to skip to where they showed up later in the book. I found myself not only enjoying the action, but also wondering what I would do in that situation, especially where Harold Lauder was concerned. The only thing that disappointed me was when they came out with the lengthend version I don't think it helped the story at all. That aside, though, anyone who hasn't read this book is missing out.
Rating: Summary: THE BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ! Review: When I first read this book (over 15 years ago), I couldn't put it down. I would start reading it at about 9 PM, and I would read until the sun came up and the birds started to sing -- really! I couldn't put it down!Never before or since THE STAND have I "met" such multi-dimensional characters. I really wanted to find out what happened to each and every one of them; they seemed so real to me. It is the ultimate story of Good vs. Evil, told as only Stephen King could tell it!
Rating: Summary: Definatly a King Classic! 5*'s+ Review: Years from now our kids will probably read Stephen King stories in their English classes...and it just might be this book. King is definatly one of our great modern day writers and this book proves it. This is my favorite King book of all time and tops my modern day fiction list too. There's so many reasons I like this book. The characters act like real people. King highly developes their motives, personalites, and thoughts. We as the readers can believe these could be real people since we can see the same personality traits and motives in real people in our lives. The apocalyptic setting not only makes for an exciting backdrop for the whole story, but also brings out the best and worst in the characters in this book. King is masterful in developing a complex philosophical debate about the influence that fate, god, evil, and our personal life experiences have on the decesions we choose to make in our lives. This is all told through King's superb command of the English language and in a wonderful and exciting gripping tale of suspense. Finally, I love this book because it sets the stage for the "King Universe." This book was written in 1978 and is referenced numerous times in later King novels. It is strongly referenced in "Eyes of the Dragon," and the Dark Tower books. For the record, I loved "Swan Song," a similar type book by Robert McCammeron. It's like my 2nd all time fave, its epic and is more fast paced than this book, but I still like "The Stand" just a tiny, tiny bit more because of the in-depth coverage of philosophical themes and characters. The Stand is a little more complex and unlike Swan Song, is central to the writer's universe and referenced in later works.
Rating: Summary: Best book ever!! Review: This book has got to be the best book ever written, by far. It is not possible at all to put it down until you're done and you've read it again. When I was done with it, I wished it was longer. I've stayed up late many nights reading it when I knew I should have been sleeping. People who think Stephen King is strictly a horror writer should read this to disprove their theories about him. I would be happy if it never ended. Definitely the best book ever.
Rating: Summary: A great book about post-apocalyptic earth Review: This is definitely one of King's greatest books of all time. Although it is long, the depth and character development is amazing, and every second is enthralling. He keeps such a balance between the paranormal and reality in the book that you feel like this is actually happening. The humanity of the book is amazing too, having characters from every point on the spectrum of life. You see love, affection, hate, greed, apathy, caring, and many more emotions coming from the characters. King manages to keep such a good balance of every element of a novel throughout the book that you feel compelled to read the book in one sitting. This is a masterpiece of modern fiction, and the only thing that stands between any reader and this book is it's length - over a thousand pages can be a bit overwhelming; but you have to remember that the depth given to each individual subplot makes them deserving to be in a book of their own. If you have never read this book, you don't know what you're missing.
Rating: Summary: perfect book Review: Anyone who has anything bad to say about this book is a total moron. It is one of the most amazing stories ever created. With a perfect ending. People who trash talk this story obviously don't know how to read that good.
Rating: Summary: THE BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ! Review: THIS BOOK IS DEFINATELY THE BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ! IT WAS SO DETAILED THAT IT WAS LIKE I WAS WATCHING A MOVIE OF IT IN MY MIND. STEPHEN KING DEFINATELY AT HIS BEST! HE'S NEVER ACCOMPLISHED ANYTHING SO VIVID AND AMAZING IN HIS WHOLE LIFE BETTER THAN THE STAND! MY MOM WOULD HAVE TO FORCE ME TO GO TO BED BECAUSE I WAS READING IT TOO MUCH AT NIGHT. I STARTED READING THE STAND WHEN I WAS 10 1/2 AND COULDN'T STOP SINCE! I FINISHED IT THIS WEEKEND AND THE STAND IS A BOOK I'LL NEVER FORGET. dEFINATELY WORTH BUYING!
