Rating: Summary: Where's the Gunslinger? Review: After reading Insomnia, I wondered if Steven King had become too powerful a writer to use an editor. After all, King himself says he has elephantitis of the mouth. I am glad to see he has gone with an editor for this one. Still, long and dreary with too little action and too much rumination. I sincerely wish he would stick with The Gunslinger series as it is the best he is currently writing.
Rating: Summary: great book... despite what other S.K. "fans" might think... Review: After reading some of the other reviews here at amazon.com it makes me wonder if all of these people are die-hard Stephen King fans. I've found that some of S.K.'s best work has been when he's staying relatively "normal".This book kept me up until four in the morning on successive nights while finishing the book in three days - I couldn't put the sucker down! A great ghost story that didn't end exactly the way I thought it would... which was a bit of a disappointment, but that's a good thing; what fun is it to read a book where you can guess exactly what happens? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion - there are books that King has written that I thought weren't up to his usual standards, but even with those books I thought that they were a good read. It seems some people only expect the truly weird stuff with bug-eyed monsters and epic storylines when they think of Stephen King, and nothing else satisfies. Not me, I just happen to like the way he writes. My favorite book of S.K. does happen to be huge and have plenty of weird things going on (that would be "IT"), but "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" and "The Green Mile" (to name a couple) are fairly "normal" stories and are absolutely fantastic!!! I would put "Bag of Bones" in the upper quarter of books he has written... and even his books of "lower standards" are still better than what most authors are putting out. If you like Stehpen King's writing style - the way he fleshes out his characters, the detailed backgrounds, the way he fits everything so neatly into his other towns and characters from previous works, and you like a good ghost story in particular... then this is a definite keeper!
Rating: Summary: well written but far from his best Review: The reason I purchased "Bag of Bones" is in part because of the reviews of other readers. After finishing it I wasn't impressed. The idea is good, the writing is well done and at times a nice departure for King but in the end the central figures of the book just don't cut it. The main character behind the plot is poorly written. As a reader it was hard to feel sympathetic or terrified, pretty much something you need in order for this type of book to work well. A bland book that could have been excellent.
Rating: Summary: Very entertaining...but not the "classic" King style. Review: The characters are, as usual, well drawn and interesting. The plot, while straying from King's usual style, is very entertaining and suspenseful. While chills did not run up my spine on this one, I still had difficulty putting the story down. This book's style reminded me most of Gerald's Game (1 star). I had no idea what the outcome would be until the final pages and was thrown for a loop towards the end (never saw it coming). King mixed enough of his macabre talent and ability to develop well-rounded characters to allow me to wholeheartedly recommend this book. You won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: too many loose ends Review: I have been a fan of King since reading The Stand as a teenager.I had three sons and was fascinated by It. Both of those books are memorable, but this King left me disjointed. It took nearly 150 pages until the pace finally picked up. The middle kept my interest. The ending was somewhat disjointed. The End.
Rating: Summary: Bag of bones : A great love ghost story. Review: Once again Stephen King takes us on a journey into the deepest darkest secerets of a small Maine town, and he dosn't disapoint. Mike Noonan is a writer who just can't get over the death of his wife four years earlier, until he goes back to his summer home on Dark Score lake. There he runs into ghosts, secerts, and the evil doings of a wealthy old man. For Mike to survive he must unravel the past of this small community and put the spirits of it to rest. Even though this is somewhat of a different aproach by King, this is still one of his better novels in the last couple of years. As a long time fan of his [ My first book I read by him was " The Shinning " in 1978 } I truelly enjoyed " Bag of bones " and I highly reccomened it.
Rating: Summary: An on the edge of your seat THRILLER! Review: I couldn't put it down. I lived in the TR with Mike for a week. It was the best by SK ever! A must read by everyone who enjoys a suspense thriller!
Rating: Summary: BAG OF BONES IS ONE OF KING'S BETTER RECENT BOOKS. Review: LET ME STATE RIGHT OFF THE BAT THAT I PAY NO ATTENTION TO BOOK REVIEWS BY "PROFESSIONAL BOOK REVIEWERS". THESE PEOPLE ARE USUALLY SO FULL OF THEMSELVES THAT THEY HAVE TO HIT IT HARD. I WILL ADMIT THAT BAG OF BONES IS NOT A GREAT BOOK, BUT IT IS A GOOD ONE, AND DESERVES SOME GOOD PRESS. I HAVE BEEN DISAPPOINTED WITH SOME OF KING'S RECENT BOOKS, BUT BAG OF BONES IS A DARN GOOD GHOST STORY. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ A GOOD STEPHEN KING BOOK, THEN DON'T, BUT DON'T PASS YOURSELF OFF AS AN EXPERT, WHEN THE ONLY THING YOU'VE WRITTEN IS A FEW LOUSY REVIEWS. BAG OF BONES IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THE SECRETS FOUND UNDER THE SURFACE IN A SMALL TOWN, THE THINGS THAT EVERYONE THAT LIVES THERE KNOWS, BUT ARN'T TALKED ABOUT. I HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT STEPHEN KING IS AN EXCELLENT WRITER. SOME BOOKS HAVE BEEN BETTER THAN OTHERS, BUT THAT'S TRUE WITH EVERYONE THAT HAS EVER WRITTEN A BOOK. THE ENDING OF BAG OF BONES MAKES ME THINK THAT MR. KING IS CONSIDERING RETIREMENT. I SINCERELY HOPE NOT, BECAUSE STEPHEN KING HAS PROVIDED ME WITH MANY GREAT HOURS OF READING PLEASURE. I ENJOY HIS BOOKS BECAUSE I WANT TO READ THEM. THEY PROVIDE ME WITH A FORM OF RELAXATION THAT BEATS READING BOOK REVIEWS ALL TO PIECES. KEEP WRITING MR. KING.
Rating: Summary: Stephen King at his best -- excellent!!!!! Review: Stephen King fans will expect to begin this journey a usual -- to be chilled and frightened beyond belief; but you're in for a pleasant suprise. The romantic aspect of this novel will put the reader over the top as Mr. King adds the element of love to this thrilling book.
Rating: Summary: One of his best! Review: I've been reading King's books for about 10 years and must say that this is one of his best. For this novel, he again writes from the perspective of an author. It's great to see his insight on what life is like to be a writer and the pressure involved in the creative process. And through this ghost story he'll keep you wondering what the hell is going on until the end. For those of us who believe in ghosts, this is a little too believeable. Have a great time!
