Rating: Summary: The ultimate Ghost Story Review: This book is, simply put, amazing. It's chilling, it's scary, It's Stephen King at his best. This book will grab you and will not let you go until you have finished it. The characters -- be it the "good" guys or the "bad" guys -- are amazing, the pacing is superb, and the setting is as vital a part of the story as the rest. You will not regret picking up this book. It will keep you on the edge of your seat! I highly recommend this book to anyone, not just Stephen King's fans.
Rating: Summary: Psicolgyking Review: The main characters: Mike Noonan - a writer who has suddenly lost his wife; he thinks she was cheating him; he can't write anymore. Mattie and Kyra - Young mother and daughter. Max Devore - Multi-millionaire in a court-of-law-battle against Mattie over Kyra (he is her grandfather). Sara Tidwell - turn-of the century black folk-singer. The setting: Dark Score Lake, Maine, and its surroundings. The house: Sara Laughs, Mike Noonan's ex-summer house, now permanent home. Grieving over his wife's death and not able to write anymore, sad Mike Noonan abandons his home in Derry and sets in Sara Laughs, his summer house by the lake. In arriving, he meets Mattie and Kyra, and falls in love with both of them, to the point of supporting them morally and financially in a law struggle against Max Devore, Mattie's ex-father in law. This is one of the plots. The other one is: Mike is trying to find why his wife hid her pregnancy before dying. He thinks that's very strange. But that's not the only thing haunting Mike. His house has ghostly noises, in the plumbing, in the cellar, everywhere. These two situations combine to take Mike's life out of a deep descent into oblivion. Stephen King has created, in "Bag of Bones", a very enjoyable book. There are a few things similar to "Rebecca". The house has an almost madly gripping feeling towards Noonan, to the point that it is in itself one of the most important characters. As the story goes on, King leads his main character through discoveries, using an intelligent and interesting artifact: when Mike is in "the zone", he is able to go back in time and find out what really happened. Mattie is also a very likable character. She has suffered a lot in her life and the reader wants her to get well with Mike. On the other side, the "bad" people are also interesting. Max Devore is one of the most mean characters I've ever found. He's mean just for the pleasure of being mean and achieving what he wants. That's it. In this book you plainly know who are the good and the bad people. I mean, if they're the living ones. 'Cause when it's about the ghosts, you never know who they are or what they're after. You just discover along with Mike, since he is the one who tells the story. There are some memorable scenes in this book. The climax part, the final two chapters are plainly madness, and I just kept rereading the amazing parts. This is a psycological thriller with all the elements Stephen King loves to provide. I just didn't gave it a 5 star rating because SOME of those elements sometimes get a little too repetitive. There were parts that I already knew what was going to happen just by reading other SK books. One final comment. I think Amazon.com should allow reviewers to rate the books in grades from 1 to 10 instead of 1 to 5. Thus, in the decimal system, the average of reviewers' rating would be more accurate. Grade 8.4/10
Rating: Summary: Too Scary Review: This book was so amazing that when I was reading it I was scared out of my mind. I have read other Stephen King books but none have scared me like this one has. There were nights were I couldn't sleep(thanks MR. King). All in all this book is great if you want a scare, and it has a great storyline. From now on I hate ringing of bells and refrigerater magnets. Hahaha.
Rating: Summary: Old school goodness! Review: This is the Stephen King you may remember of old. The tone is reminiscent of the Shining and The Stand. Yes, it is a long book, like so many of his works, but I haven't felt myself caring for so many of his characters in a long time. Once again, King proves that his genius is being able to write the average person. If you've been thinking about reading this novel, think no more...read!
Rating: Summary: IT TOOK JUST A DAY Review: It took just a day to read BAG OF BONES because it is such a gripping novel that once u start it its really hard to let it go, at least that was the case with me.Stephen King is at his best in this novel as he had also added a little touch of romance to one of his most horror tales. It was a little harsh to give it 4 stars but i it was just because of a little flaw in the book which i guess all people will agree with the ending. But i guess it was not a love story i was reading after all it was a horror and indeed one of KING's best
Rating: Summary: Touching, chilling, romantic ghost story Review: Can I think of any more positive adjectives to describe this novel? I loved this story when I first read it, and I'm even more in love with it now that I've listened to it. This is Stephen King storytelling at his finest.
King delivers a wonderful hero in Mike Noonan, a popular writer who finds himself with a painful case of writer's block after the sudden death of his wife. Hoping to revive his writing and to heal his broken heart, Mike moves into the summer home that he and his wife purchased together: Sara Laughs. Once there, Mike's life gets more and more bizarre and tangled up in the fate of Mattie Devore and her daughter, Kyra (who has a strong connection with Mike and the events happening around them). Mike finds himself falling in love with the much younger Mattie and identifies Kyra with the daughter he might have had if his wife had lived. It takes Mike a while to figure out that there are forces at work in his small town and in his summer home that are determined to see an old vendetta played out to the end. Mike must protect Kyra as well as his own sense of self. Through his eyes we learn about the horrible events that took place nearly a century ago and that basically cursed the descendents of those responsible.
This is one of the most beautifully written novels of any genre that I've ever read. King is at the top of his storytelling prowess with this one. I thought that reading this was a treat, but listening to the audio tapes turned out to be even better. King narrates this with a simplicity that is touching and believable. He becomes Mike Noonan in this narration. I had to pull my car to the side of the road to get through some of the heart-wrenching descriptions of Mike's feelings for Mattie. There are also plenty of chills, and the ghost story is great horror. This novel has a bit of everything for every reader.
I also liked the music used throughout this audiobook. This brings Sara to life and adds such a haunting feel to the story. Keep listening at the end of this audiobook. There is an interview with King, and he gives some background about the writing process itself as well as what motivates him to record his own stories. These tapes are well worth the money. Are you listening yet?
Rating: Summary: A book for even for those that aren't too thrilled with King Review: I myself love Stephen King and cannot wait for another one of his novels to come out. This one however, blew me away. This is by far the best "ghost" story I have ever read. A typical King novel set in the north east, but with a twist. A definite page turner that kept me up until the wee hours of the morning.
Rating: Summary: A great book by a great writer Review: I have read and listened to many Stephen King books. Some are super, while some are just somewhat interesting. This book to me was spellbinding! I could not quit listening, as I had the audio version of this book. I drive about 80,000 miles per year and dedicate every driving mile to audio books. I have listened to many good and bad books. I have really emphasized Stephen King in my library. This book is really good, and almost all the way through it, I could imagine myself there, and suffer each and every struggle with the characters. I recommend this book. My brother doesn't, so how true of a review could you ever imagine? To me, this book is in my top five Stephen King books! Good reading or listening. I wish Stephen King would continue this book as a series or a part two at least.
Rating: Summary: One of Stephen King's best Review: I am not going to repeat the plot of the book again--you can read previous reviews for that purpose. I liked this book so much, I bought the book and then bought the unabridged audio book just to hear King read it. At the end of the audio book I was surprised that there is a 30 minute interview with Stephen King. He explains why he read the audio version; about the goal in writing to take us--with seamless transition--from the real to the unreal world; he also answers the question--Why Mike Noonan stopped writing. Remember, Mike Noonan tells us himself why he stopped writing at the end of the book. This book is based on what appears and secrets that are kept vs what really is to the outside world. An example is the happiness of Mike and Jo and then Mike finds out Jo visited Sarah Laughs without him knowing. Then we find out why she visits Sara Laughs. There are other examples what appears vs what really is. This is a good read and is one of King's best in a long time.
Rating: Summary: Another page-turner Review: In contrast to one of the other reviews, I believe King was loyal in giving us yet another thriller. This story held my interest and King did not 'drag on' as he has in a couple other works. I found it quite unpredictable and in a strange, pleasant way. King has such an imagination and dares to go places that many of us do not - or at least will not admit. He takes a chance with every story he writes. It was nice to have a good ending and to see that good, once again, overcame evil in his story. You never know which way King will go. Sometimes the good wins, sometimes the evil wins. And then sometimes, you just never surely know!!
