Rating: Summary: Slow to start but then a can't-put-it-downer Review: If this had not been a Stephen King novel (and I have been reading him from the very beginning)and I had not purchased the hard-back, I probably would not have continued after 50-80- pages but because it was Stephen King I gave it a chance. It took me about 300 pages to get to the point where I could not put the book down. I feel this book could have been scaled down and did not need such a tremendous build-up to get to this point. However, once it did, it was extremely exciting and a must finish. There were some points I felt that were not answered or left me hanging. What happened to the other men that were shot for one. If you can put up with a lot of uneccessary description and characterization then continue to read for a thrilling ending.
Rating: Summary: Stephen King has a way with words Review: Comments on Bag of Bones "Thunder rolled across the lake like a big mahogany ball. . ." Stephen King has a way with words. A way I had been enjoying ever since the 70s - when The Shining had me immobilized, afraid to open my bedroom door after dark. A way I began to doubt somewhere around The Tommyknockers. I continued to enjoy some of his work, like Needful Things. But some of it, such as Gerald's Game, I didn't particularly care for. Some of it I just couldn't read, but that left me free to discover a couple of other writers and something other than horror stories. Then Desperation - to me, back on track. I (wisely, I am told) skipped the companion to that book. Haven't read anything since that (except the one about the autistic kid possessed by Ka). Now here I am with Bag of Bones. And I am not interested in reading any kind of love story, haunted or otherwise. Not after having just fallen in and been knocked right back out of love. If only it were as easy as being knocked out of a ring. Just knocked out. My first thought - another one. And there is a bit of dread mixed with that thought. Check the number of the last page - another one that could use about a hundred page cut - it's going to be far too long. Look to the back of the jacket - nobody had anything to say about it. I am less than enthused to start this book, so instead I just turned out the light and went to bed. Day 1 of reading: Waited til this morning when I woke up to start it. Now another one about a writer - details I need to remember from other books. Now I'm on page 49, and would almost rather not put it down now, but there are things I must do. He's got a way with words. And it's a great book so far. Another 100 pages or so. A writer, writing about a writer suffering from writer's block. (?????) I look again at the number of the final page, being careful not to read a single word of that final page before its time. I know this book is not going to be too long, at 531 pages. I have laughed. I have chuckled. I have been saddened by death. Even gripped by a cold, icy fear. This is a great book. Probably Stephen King's best in a long, long time. And it is not the usual Stephen King, though it is. All the growth, all the evolution, that has taken place since Carrie and The Shining, seems to culminate in Bag of Bones. Is this what happens when you mix creative genius with living in a secluded place like Maine? Manifestations you accept as naturally as the sun shining. No need for suspension of disbelief. Just keep reading. Day 2 of reading: I started this morning around page ??? I remember seeing 299 when I checked. Now I'm at page 462. This book is not too long. Less than 70 pages to go. I approach that final page with dread anticipation - I really don't want to finish because then there will be nothing left to read. I read nonstop - I must know what is about to happen next. And I do not want it to end. I'm probably going to have to read it again. All day, I've been reading, and I could not stop long enough to eat. OK, a bowl of cereal this morning, but no time to make anything for lunch. Had to tear myself away to make grinder rolls so I can have dinner later - after I finish reading Bag of Bones.
Rating: Summary: edge-of -your-seat-thriller Review: Once I started this I couldn't put it down!! Not since the green mile has a steven king book captured my undivided attention. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good mystery/thriller. You feel for the main characters every step of the way.
Rating: Summary: Slow starts lead to good endings Review: I have read several books by Steven King and I'd have to say this book was by far the best! Bag of Bones started out slow but toward the middle it really started to pick up. I also didn't like the grafic sexual matter of some of the chapters (I read it for the horror). But other than that it was a well written book.
Rating: Summary: Slow to start, but a gripping finish. Review: The cover blurb touts "Bag of Bones" as "Stephen King's most gripping and unforgettable novel". Even allowing for acceptable advertising liberties, I disagree. "Bag of Bones" is the story of Mike Noonan, a novelist unable to write since his wife died four years ago. There are some unanswered questions about his wife's movements just before she died. Noonan goes to his summer house in a small town in rural Maine, in the hope he will find some answers. There he meets a widowed mom and her three-year old daughter, who are facing a custody battle against the child's grandfather. Noonan tries to help them, and gradually begins to suspect that the custody battle and his questions about his wife are connected. To me, "Bag of Bones" took a long time to get going. King spent a lot of pages setting the scene, and I found it difficult to stay interested in the mysteries he raised. It's not just that there were too few answers; even the questions were too infrequent to really keep me from putting the book down at regular intervals. Having said that, the book really took off from about page 300 or so, and the plot resolutions came thick and fast. There were more than a few twists along the way, and a good dose of the supernatural. Things were tied up pretty neatly at the end, too, although I found the red herrings were explained away a little awkwardly. King is one of my favourite authors, and as always, his style was readable and his characters were interesting. But this novel just didn't grab me like some of his others have. The ending was great, but I'd already put the book down too many times to feel satisfied after turning the last page.
Rating: Summary: Wow..... Review: Ok. Before I read this book, I had only read 1 of Stephen King's books (Rose Madder) and 1 of his series (The Green Mile). This book is INCREDIBLE. I just couldn't put it down, and finished it in a week. That might not seem very amazing, except for one fact: I am a young teen. I will definitely be reading King's other works as well. Oh yeah: My friends want to read this book as well. And they say youth doesn't care.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Great tale, King's has never been better. Review: This is the greatest King book ever. Don't understand the negative reviews, especially since 95 percent are 4 and 5 star reviews. King's new master work is pure prose. My favorite Stephen King novel was The Talisman, and of course The Shining and the The Stand. Couldn't put this one down. Have read 16 books this summer from Amazon.com and this was the best. Want another book that will scare the hell out of you, then read Brad Steiger's new book, Alien Rapture. It is a scifi-horror /conspiracy that has characters as in depth as King's new novel. I purchased both books for gifts. I highly recommend this book very much. If you want something more real from the author of Hot Zone, then read 'Cobra.'
Rating: Summary: Really enjoyable, a real "can't-put-downer" Review: I really enjoyed Bag of Bones. King does it again with a great mix of character, story and style. I don't know how he does it, but few authors can grab my attention like he does, and Bag of Bones is no exception. Keep em coming!
Rating: Summary: Extra-ordinary Review: Although i am not a fan of King, but this book is absolutely wonderful, you may find the first few chapters a little bit bored, but starting from Ch9, you will know how gorgeous it is, you can't put it down, i have finished the whole book within 4 days. Wonderful
Rating: Summary: Two Words: Chilling. Addictive. Review: I was on the phone with my friend Tim, he was telling me about how he hurt his ankle. And I, was all set to tell him about Mike; how Mike hurt his ankle when I realized that Mike isn't really a friend of mine at all...acually, he isn't even a real, living breathing person. He's the main character of BAG OF BONES. But that's how real these characters became to me. I had dreams about the characters. I walked nervously to the bathroom in the middle of the night because there are parts that gave me the willies. The 500-some pages wisked me along, whirled around me, and zoomed by. I was sorry it was over. As a writer myself, I love and envy King at the same time. It's very obvious in reading his writing how easy it is for him. And he's so good at it too!
