Rating: Summary: Forget the Tower, Grab this Bag! Review: Finally, a book worthy of King. I am so pleased to finally read a ghost story with such wonderful, dark morality at its core. I have been disappointed with Kings recent Wizard and Glass (closing it after 630 pages)that I thought he might have lost his talent. I am happy to say that he has not!
Rating: Summary: Sometimes the grieving souls... Review: ... get lost, but Mr. King makes sure they find themselves.Sometimes they have to loose again to win though. That is the way of life. No explanations, just "ka", and if you read the Gunslinger you know that "ka takes care of itself". This is definitely not a fast paced read as The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordan or The Storm of a Century. I don't understand what the bad reviews from proclaimed fans are. I wonder just what they expect out of King. My thoughts are that they have a favorite novel or two and really expect all to run along those books lines. I think he does just what he sets out to do with each book. Take us on a long and winding road through our own minds.
Rating: Summary: Stephen King's Best Review: This is the best book I've read in a very, very long time. Until now, The Stand and The Green Mile have been my all-time favorites. But Bag Of Bones has gone to the top of the list. King starts out with a normal believable story and takes the reader, willing or not, on an exciting and wild ride into the world of ghosts, Filled with many little pearls, ("Put an egg in your shoe and beat it"... I thought my mother was the author of that one.) and extensive insight into the mind of a writer, this is King at his very best. Absolutely un-put-downable and worth reading more than once.
Rating: Summary: A haunting novel from Stephen King Review: "Bag of Bones" looks like a ghost novel, but it's really the story of a man recovering from his wife's death. The book begins with a middle-aged novelist, Michael Noonan, explaining how his wife died. After wasting the first three years following his wife's death, Michael returns to their summer home in a remote Maine village. There he confronts his feelings, falls in love with two younger women and battles a 100-year-old curse. At the center of "Bag of Bones" is a mystery. What is wrong with the people of Dark Score Lake? Who are the spirits haunting Michael Noonan? What do they want from him? And how does this all tie in with a young widow and her daughter? King spends a lot of time unraveling the mystery. He gives you one puzzle piece at a time, and you can't make out the whole picture until you've read the book's climax. But it's not a pretty picture - it's sad. I'm glad King didn't spend a whole lot of time with the legal custody battle. This book has everything to do with legal custody, but nothing to do with courtrooms. It's about what a group of people gives up with an evil act, and what a victim might rightfully claim as revenge. At center stage is Michael Noonan, who, while fighting for the women he loves, regains a sense of purpose for his life.
Rating: Summary: A courtroom drama with a ghost thrown in for fun. Boo-hiss. Review: I was sorely disappointed with this novel. Stephen King needs to stay away from courtrooms and go back to the Dark Tower.
Rating: Summary: This book was a thrilling story of romance and terror. Review: Bag of Bones This book was a thrilling story of romance and terror. Bag of Bones is partly inspired by Daphne du Maurier classic, Rebecca. Stephen King's Bag of Bones, like Maurier's Manderley, is set in a scary old house, Sara Laughs, on Dark Score Lake. It tells a story about a forty-year old novelist, Mike Noonan, who is unable to let go of his wife, Johanna Noonan, after she died so suddenly. He begins to face a "block" and is unable to face the screen of his computer. At night, he begins to have nightmares of his summer house, Sara Laughs, on Dark Score Lake. Despite his dreams, Mike returns to Sara Laughs, originally inhabited by Sara Tidwell and her family. Now the house holds a mysterious secret and is haunted by the lady of the manor. His Yankee town has changed because of a millionaire, Max Devore, who is determined to take away his three year old granddaughter from his young widowed daughter-in-law. As Mike enters the struggle, he begins to fall in love with the child and the mother. As he begins to get drawn into the mystery of the house, he comes upon the ghosts of men, women, and wailing children attempting to warn him. He also finds out information about his dead wife, Johanna Noonan. Either she had a mysterious secret hidden from the ears of those close to her, or there was a scandal lurking in the mists of Dark Score Lake. What was Jo's secret? Is she one of the many ghosts trying to warn Mike Noonan to "stay away?" What are they trying to say? Why has he been experiencing such gruesome nightmares? This novel contains outstanding visual pictures, as well as, horror and romance. "The novel expresses the obsessive voice of King's powerful imagination," says Amy Tan. King takes a mixture of reality and the paranormal to produce a story of love, mystery, and terror. I think the story unfolds the darkness of one's heart, and the decrepit forms evil comes in. King informs his reader about the dark secrets love can hold. King demonstrates this through the marriage of Mike Noonan and his wife Johanna. Although Johanna may have been seen as the perfect wife, she held many secrets from her husband. Max Devore uses his money as a weapon, and his weapon ends up killing him. He uses his deception to outsmart other people , but the ones who've been hurt by it won't let it hurt them again. This book was absolutely outstanding. It contain all the ingredients to make it a gripping and unforgettable novel. As Gloria Naylor said, " It's no secret that King is our most mesmerizing storyteller." -Kamille Grey
Rating: Summary: Real life horror can be scarier than fiction Review: As a Stephen King self confessed addictee I bought 'BAG OF BONES" without reading any reviews or even the jacket cover for that matter.Something the author may or may not hate to hear but truth regardless. This book was the first to effect me so deeply of his work to-date and the shocking revelation of the origin of sin made its reading disturbing but unescapable. King yet again shows that the attrocities possible by the human condition are far more "horrifying" than ghoules and boogeymen. A great read on many levels and well worth the investment...in time, money and thought.
Rating: Summary: Who Abducted Steven King's Muse????? Review: Ok, I'm a devout King fan, but this book was a waste of time (and a waste of paper... the story could have--read, should have-- been told in many fewer pages. Problem one... A great deal of the plot is taken from Daphne Du Marier's Rebecca (a book I highly recommend... a great read and a lot shorter). Problem two... the plot didn't even start to emerge until a hundred pages had past. I would really like to know what has happened to King since his greater earlier works (Pet Semetary, for instance. Or Rose Madder, now that was great reading). Between this one and The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, I'm going to be very hesitant to read anything King puts out in the future.
Rating: Summary: Stephen King, why? Review: First off, I love Stephen King. He's my favorite author and I've read almost all of his books (save the ones I've seen movies of, since that does ruin the book). But, I have to admit that Bag of Bones is the worst King novel i've read so far. the novel is really hard to get into. King usually uses some scary element to interest the reader, but here Mike Nooman's "nightmares" just don't do the trick. Then there's the colliding storylines. it doesn't stay constant and when one conflict is resolved, another pops out of nowhere (and I really do mean nowhere). Instead of just pushing them all together, they're simply lined up (the storylines that is). But what I really didn't like about the book the most was the absence of the utter horror that has been in every King novel I've read. There's absolutely nothing scary about this book. If i wanted to read about a legal battle, which is one conflict in this book, i'd read a John Grisham novel. Okay, now I'm not downing King, I just don't like this book. He's still my favorite author by far. My favorite is DESPERATION.
Rating: Summary: Mouth Covering, Seat Grabbbing Kind of Book! What Fun! Review: The audio version of this book is fantastic. It is by far the best book/cd book I have ever listened to. I am not normally a King fanatic, but this book is wonderful. Startling, scary, funny, and hard to turn off. I listened to it on the commute from work and some night's had to sit in the car at my front door for 20 mins. because I couldn't turn it off. King is the reader on this one too and that is an added bonus. Only he knows how it should be read! Don't miss this one!
