Summary: Gets a little confusing toward the end...
Review: 'Bag of Bones' is the first non-horror King novel I've read - previously I had feasted on Needful Things, It, Pet Sematary and Nightmares and Dreamscapes. So I was a little wary about what to expect.

For those who may be sceptical about whether King can write a decent tale, not just a blood and gore horror (incidentally, I don't consider the three above horrors to be just that - they are fine stories in their own right), this book will prove them wrong. It is about Mike Noonan, a hugely popular author who suffers from a devastating case of writer's block after the untimely death of his wife. After four years, he retreats to his summer vacation home, Sara Laughs.

His slow realisation that the house is haunted, and the relationship he builds with local Mattie Devore and her daughter Kyra, form the cornerstone of the novel.

I enjoyed reading about the developing relationship, especially with Kyra. However, I became lost at times toward the back end of the book, when the novel turned more towards supernatural issues, and the spirits haunting Sara Laughs. I struggled through the last forty-odd pages, failing to realize the significance of some parts. Whether this is due to the novel or my own failings, I don't know.

It's certainly not King's greatest - nothing in my mind could ever rival It - but it's, for the most, an entertaining read. I would have given it 3.5 stars if I could... but 4 stars is certainly more appropriate than 3!

Summary: Great storytelling!
Review: I've been reading Stephen King books since I was a teenager in the late 70's. He was my favorite author until his "It", "Tommyknockers" & "Needful Things" phase. Then it was kind of hit or miss whether I liked his books or not.

"Bag of Bones" is one of the best books Mr King has written in a long time! Great storytelling and character developement. The characters and setting really come to life, making me feel as if I was right there with them. This wasn't one of those "can't put it down" books but rather one of those books you kind of linger over and carry around with you like an old friend. It's the perfect book to take with you on vacation! Enjoy!!!

Summary: A Good Read But Lacks something
Review: Okay. I'll Be honest with you. I am a HUGE Stephen King Fan. In My mind the man can do no wrong. But you might ask, why I gave this book 3 stars. Over all the Book is very well crafted, but to me it is more about a man trying to cope with inner demons. I would Feel juistfied in sayting that Bag of Bones is better than the average book. I have read a lot and felt that Mr. King is good in weaving a tale. It was the Villans in this story that I though really weren't up to par as they should be and the end was rather anti climatic. But I will let you judge for your self.

Summary: The Old King Again
Review: Finally: I read a King novel like I used to when I was much younger. Like in the old times when we read "It", "Pet Sematary" the "Tommknockers" and more of the kind. So the five stars are a must. But one thing has changed. King's writing has matured, if I am allowed to say this. His characters are flesh and blood, and the setting - his Maine - is full of real life. The Yankees are described after long and meticulous observation of the different types, the author looks at them and their pecularities with love, affection, understanding. But he never loses his critical distance. The supernatural elements blend in the novel very naturally. Without it the novel would not be "realistic". And he writes in the tradition of the great regionalists, he would be one of their best. Maybe this is why he keeps quoting and mentioning Thomas Hardy in this novel. There may be one little thing that some readers might see a little negative: very often King is carried away by his love of writing and this gives some length to a couple of passages. But those who know him grant him generous pardon. Well done! I am waiting for the next in the row.

Summary: KING'S "COMPLETE" NOVEL
Review: This novel ran the full range of emotions, from romanticism, to pathos, to stark terror. For the first time I felt total empathy with his main caracter, and the descriptions of the other characters and settings were such that I felt as though I were really there. This is a fairly long novel by King's standards, but I found it to be one of his most readable, and I recommend it to all King fans.

Summary: SK shows he can step out of the cliche
Review: .... The book is very good. If you are an unimaginative, or stereotypical person who thinks that every book by an author needs to sound like a dreary sequel to the one that was written before it, then don't bother with this story, it is not typical Stephen King. Also, before reading this, look at the cover...see where it says "A haunted love story"...hmm, that probably means that it is more of a love story than a horror novel...ding ding, any lights come on to [people] that complain that it is too concerned with a man greiving the death of his wife. Another thing to keep in mind, and probably the most important thing, this is written in the first person...a narrative of a man struggling and failing to cope with greif, guilt and some really weird paranormal stuff...naturally it is going to be sappy, slow and have several blind branch-offs...duh, does anyone think in a clear, concise storybook format...no, if it was written that way it would have been totally unbeleivable. If you are going to read this book you need to enjoy literature as much as you enjoy a good story. You need to open yourself up and relate to what are reading. Enjoy the twists and the way the book plays you....don't rush it, that destroys a book.

Another interesting side-note.... This book is NOT about Stephen King, or his "whining" or "personal problems"...this book has been a work in progress for Stephen King, he has worked at it long before the release of his other, more famous books. Just because it is on the new release rack, don't assume that it was written two days ago. I will come to the ... defense on only one point...Stephen King hates a happy ending more than anything. Anyone that has read his work should know that, so expect a lot of unresolved converns and some anger over the characters that he builds so well and then destroys. Give the book a chance, and if you hate it, then the book is not for you (obviously).... The book is great, I highly recommend it. If you like a movie better than a book, think twice though...this isn't a hollywood screen play and won't read like one.

Summary: my favorite!!
Review: This is my absolute favorite Stephen King book. It's beautifully written. For four days after I bought this book, I did nothing but read!

Summary: One of King's best books
Review: I thought this story was great, creepy, but with a nice romantic story as well. When I finished the book, I reread it immediately! The characters are very sympathetic, and I hope Stephen King writes more stories like this one.

Summary: Proved he hasn't lost his touch
Review: Just when I was beginning to think that Stephen King had lost his edge he comes out with this amazing book. It's a about a man who feels inexplicably drawn to his summer home after his wife's death. When he gets there he get's drawn into a local custody dispute between a young woman and her late husband's father. From that point on the story just takes a life of it's own. You'll never guess how this one ends up so don't even try. Just relax and enjoy the ride. I couldn't put this one down.
