Summary: Coraline
Review: CORALINE

By: Neil Gaiman

Coraline- A young, sweet, affectionate, little girl living in a strange world.
Other Mom- creepy, made out of wood, button eyes, creepy.
Other Dad- Odd, also made out of wood, button eyes, quite.
Mom- Sweet, affectionate to her daughter, helpful, always working.
Dad- Nice, quite, mysterious, a very bad cook.

· Plot- The very quite, young girl named Coraline for her parents she thinks she has an average life, with an average mom, an average dad, and average neighbors. Or does she? Coraline is now on a search for her real parents. Going through a world of fake moms and dads with beady black button eyes, bodies made out of wood and much more.
· Setting- The setting takes place in Coralines new home.
· Theme- Coraline is trying to save her parents from another world on the other side of a door. Coraline meets new people makes new friends and much, much more!
· Whether or Not I liked the story and why- I liked the story over all. The book though is a bit cheesy when you first get into it but it gets better later on in the story. I liked this story because it made you think of what you would do and how far you would go to save your parents, even when it means risking yours.

Summary: Creepy for kids? Try creepy for me!
Review: I've read Gaiman before, and this wasn't quite what I was expecting... Seriously, this book creeped me out. It tells the story of a young girl, Coraline, who discovers there is a whole parallel world on the other side of one of the doors in her flat. It has an Alice in Wonderland feel to it, but the illustrations enhance the creepiness of what Coraline finds in the other world. My roommate wouldn't even look at the front of the book! :) Coraline makes several trips to the other world...but gets stuck there. Strange overall story...

Summary: Not Gaiman's best
Review: Not to say that Neil Gaiman is a poor writer, because he is surely one of the most imaginative and talented writers out there, but Coraline falls flat and is definitely not his best work. It is an undeveloped story with characters lacking depth. The peripheral characters (Coraline's neighbors) seem be tossed in to add some fleck of color, but add nothing to the experience. I know Gaiman seems to be exploring the children's market with other books like Wolves in the Walls (which is only worth purchasing for the illustrations, really), but his talents lie in other genres and should stick with it. There were some moments that were creepy, I admit, but this story doesn't belong in book form. (It would've made a great Twilight Zone episode). All in all, stay away from Gaiman's children's books and read the Sandman series or his other works intended for grown-ups.

Summary: Coraline
Review: The story, Coraline, which was written by Neil Gaiman, is a very suspenseful,

haunting book. Coraline is a young girl who is in the first grade and she and her family

have just moved into the first floor of her grandmother's mansion. When Coraline begins

to explore the house, she is warned by her mother to stay away from a particular wall. Her

curiosity gets the better of her and she finds her way through the hallway and into another

world, a very strange world to be exact. She becomes a prisoner in this world by "false"

parents and she has to find her way out of this evil place back to safety and family love.

This is a good book to read if one likes suspense and a bit of science fiction.

Summary: Dark but not Deep and Not for Kids
Review: The story of Coraline delivers horrifying images which stay with the reader, such as buttons sewed in place of eyes on the "other mother," and the pathetic, emaciated ghosts of the dead children killed by neglect of the "other parents." (Actually these reminded me of the images of the "poor unfortunate souls" possessed by the Witch in the Little Mermaid movie but more horrible, as they are neglected children faded away.)

There was a flatness to the tale, a lack of dimension, like a bad dream, partially remembered, though lingering. It was not meant for children, but I feel a cautionary tale to adults who are inattentive to children - showing how harmed mentally and emotionally children can be without a loving relationship with an adult.

Children's books which are scarey but have more depth/value are: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, where there is character growth and more hope even in difficult situations, and help from a Good Power; Lemony Snicket series of Unfortunate Events which so eggagerates the characters' endless dilemas, it becomes ridiculous and lightens the tale, and also has goofy asides describing word definitions;and Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett, in which a girl, Tiffany, who finds she is a witch, has to rescue her brother from an evil witch invading from fairyland. The fights in this last tale and the struggles between good and evil are intense and even frightening. But, again, there is more depth of character AND comic relief, as well.

I would not recommend Coraline for any sensitive child of any age. Look at how frightened many of the adult readers were. It is not worth it.

Summary: What a Wonderful Surprise!
Review: I bought Coraline for my sons, 8 and 10, because I thought it looked interesting. They both read it and yes they said they enjoyed it, so I also read it. Well I finished it last night and I could not sleep for hours afterwards. Now granted I'm a bit of a scaredy cat and afraid of the dark already, but I had not expected a "children's" book to so affect me. It was not just cheep scares but genuinely deep thought provoking scares. This book had me thinking about the nature of life, death, reality and fear for hours. I must say it was wonderful. The book is not very long, I read it in just the one day, but it packs a lot in a small package. I highly recommend it. I do hope that Gaiman puts out more for the adolescent crowd as I appreciate the ability to provide my children with intelligent, well written, scary, thought provoking books that I can share with them.

Summary: Non-Horror readers, try this book out!
Review: I read this book in a matter of hours because I got very absorbed in it, not because of its 176 pages or whatever. I've never been really into horror or anything, but one of the Public Library's librarians came to our school and reccomended it to us, and so after a year I bought it and read it. WOW I wasn't disapointed in the least! It was a real page turner, and the end isn't one of those ending-abrubtly endings where everything is happy all of a sudden. Great book, I reccomend it to all ages! "You'll never think of buttons in quite the same way again"!

Summary: Gaiman's imagination goes wild
Review: Absolutely gripping book as i finished reading it in one go. Gaiman has done it again with his dark imaginative stories and this book is a must in any collection. While reading it, the story kept me imagining things and it feels like you're there watching Coraline. It gets so scary at one time, that i actually threw the book down and get a grip. What makes the book even better and give you a feel of this story is through Dave Mckean's illustration. These two are classic partners. It's fantastic and this story would make a good movie. I bet any children would get terrible nightmares by reading it.
